Preface

Life originated in the sea and has sustained itself to the present day. The world’s

oceans comprise the largest part of the biosphere and contain the most primeval and

diverse forms of life. Peninsular-Tropical India is bestowed with the marine biotopes of

unmatched metabolic and organismal diversity. India occupies a strategic position in the

Indian Ocean, with an extensive Exclusive Economic Zone, EEZ, of about 2.172 million

square kilometers in the area along the 7500 Km coastal line, shelf area of 1,641,514 KM2.

The challenge facing India as well as the opportunity knocking her doors is having

continued advances in sciences in sync with cutting-edge technologies to negotiate in a

sustainable way with the rich realms of marine resources for supporting the development

of humanity on earth in meeting the latter’s expanding needs.

The functional diversity of marine life, microbial extremophiles and halophiles

possessing unexplored new genes, organisms and natural products, is the ideal target for

bioprospecting of high quality-healthy food (aquaculture), nutraceuticals, medicinal

products (anti-cancer and antimicrobials) and sustainable alternative source of energy

and clean environment. Marine Biotechnology studies are capable of making a significant

contribution towards meeting the impending challenge of ensuring a sustainable supply

of food, energy and human health by providing the needed well trained marine

scientists/biotechnologist/entrepreneurs/educators in a range of disciplines.

The Department of Marine Biotechnology established in 2008-09, as per Syndicate

Resolution No. 2008.176 dated 18th Sep. 2008, is offering 2-year M.Sc. Program on Marine

Biotecnology and changed to Biotechnology(Specialization in Marine) from the academic

year 2019, M.Phil. in Microbial Biotechnology and Ph.D. programs in Microbiology and

Microbial Biotechnology with the characteristic blending of inter- and multi-disciplinary

emphasizes aligning with the domain-core specialties of Marine Biotechnology.

Programme Structure

IV (b) M.Sc. M.Sc., Biotechnology (Specialization in Marine)

( Duration : 2 Years)

General Objective: Biotechnology is an area where products are derived or developed from a wide variety of animals, plants and microbes. These organisms are grown in culture and used for food, feed, fuel, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other products. The course familiarizes candidates with the usage of living organism and bioprocesses in the combination of biology with technology and it also offers a skill based degree programme with specialization in the field of marine living organisms with relevant Sciences.

Specific objective: Creating an arena for bio-prospecting of biological organisms for sustainability through innovative Research and development leading to Industry-Society-tangent bio-processes and IPR kind outcomes besides publications.

Eligibility:

B.Sc. Biotechnology/Marine Biotechnology /Microbiology/Animal Science/Life Sciences/Marine Science/Biochemistry/Fisheries Science/Environmental Science/Biotechnology/Botany/Zoology/Biomedical Science etc. with minimum of 55% marks.

Selection Procedure: Selection will be made on UG Marks and the interview

Semester-wise breakup of the course syllabus as follows (Applicable to the candidates admitted from the Academic year July 2019 onwards)

Scope Biotechnology is one of the most developing field in today’s education

system in all over the world and it creates technology and products that

help to improve microbes, plants, animals and human beings. The

technologies are found to be of great help in improvement of food,

medicine, environmental and clean industrial manufacturing products.

Hence, the scope of biotechnology with specialization in marine as a

carrier option is very promising field of biology. This course enables the

student to contribute the benefits to society in all the ways. There are

58

many organizations in national and international levels that are great

resources for graduates in the field of biotechnology and marine life.

Job opportunities: 1. Biotechnology graduates can go for higher studies as researchers in molecular biology/genetic engineering etc. 2. Marketing executives, Work in Biofuel, Bioprocessing fields etc 3. Biopharmaceutical/chemicals/fertilizer/animalhusbandary/cosmetics companies/hospital as Executives/Technicians/Researchers 4.Biotechnology laboratories/clinical and food production firms as Scientists. 5. Entrepreneurship developments /consultation agencies in biotechnological and marine products 6. Teaching profession in national and international level 7. Research and placement of jobs in marine such as fisheries/aquaculture/Aquarium/museums etc.
