Danny presented the shortest speech by a speaker at the Club last week and we all went home early. In his short talk he spoke about his work as Managing Director of The Pantry Brighton which was has been an important part of the Bayside landscape for 21 years. In a relaxed, stylish setting, their customers can enjoy delicious food served with a smile by their fantastic team. The Pantry team is like one big family, and Danny hope this comes across in the fun and friendly environment they have created. At the Pantry, they have something for everyone. kids, parents, friends, families & business associates come to their restaurant for their great food, coffee and wine. The Pantry is the home of The Miele Pantry Cooking Show and Masterclass series. Danny said that he and his partners have a $30 million turnover with the Pantry and the Hugo’s Group of Restaurants and bars. About 50% of this goes on paying staff which he says are his greatest asset. Their Group also supports Portsea Polio, Murdoch Children’s Research and other charities as well as our Australian Rotary Health which our PP Des Thomas has been very much involved with.Danny Vaughan and the Pantry team have very generously donated their services, fine Pantry food and wines at no cost for 14 Annual Pantry Dinners, raising over $110,000 for Australian Rotary Health. A.R.H. have recently recognised Danny and the Pantry team with a Ruby Companionship and have again expressed their appreciation of their very generous contribution over this time.Danny who told us he was late for his wedding anniversary several times during his presentation and that he need to get to the Men’s Room then decided to run an unusual question timeinvolving PP Des Thomas dressed up as a barrel girl and chose 3 of our Members - PP Paul Nicholson, Alan Pinkus and Chris McGetrick - who answered questions to win Kambrook appliances donated by Danny. It was finally decided to use the appliances as door prizes for the upcoming Brighton Lunch.President Peter then thanked Danny for his short talk and contribution to A.R.H. and presented him with the club tie. He then closed the meeting at 7.45pm and sent us home early.

The Team organised and led by Gerhard Sommer returned last week after 14 days in Cambodia. This included Daryl Forge, Barry Hickman, Peter Henderson and Stuart and a plumber, John Godding.

The Project: Improve health, hygiene and viability of a group of ‘forgotten’ villages about 85Km west of Phnom Penh. The team undertook a pilot project at the first village, where 27 families (Bossala - commune) - lacked clean water during the ‘dry’ season, have a limited cash income and are dependent on donated food.

The team fabricated six 5,500 litre concrete tanks and roof plumbing for ‘harvesting’ and storage of rainwater during the dry season. Also we funded a small Asian-style toilet block and a solar lighting unit for the village. They also provided vegetable seed, fish stock and fruit trees for a small plantation, which should provide the commune with additional food/cash crop.

The Club cost to date was $10,000, and we are receiving an initial RI grant of $4,000.

Next step is to seek a RI grant to roll our the scheme to the remaining two villages, over the next few years.

Very interesting and rewarding experience - great enthusiasm and support from the village people.

The Team looks forward to telling you more about their experiences in a few weeks time.

See letter from Bronwyn Stephens (WOD Chair) next page.

SERGEANT’S SESSION

There being no sergeant’s session last week the Editor has called his good friend Sgt Slaughter to come up with some fines of his own from last week’s meeting:

PP Geoff Knight: For being AWOL and not finding a replacement Sergeant for the meeting ;

* Speaker Danny: For presenting the shortest speech from a guest speaker;* Speaker Danny: For running the most confusing question segment ever held

at our Club meetings. We did however appreciate the very generous donation of various kitchen appliances which Danny suggested might be offered at the upcoming Brighton Lunch as giveaways;

* PP Des Thomas: For doing the worst female impersonation ever seen at this club as a ‘barrel girl’. Someone mentioned that he reminded him of his first wife!;

* Speaker Danny: For mentioning more than twice that he was ‘busting’ to go to the toilet;

* Speaker Danny: For being late for his wedding anniversary - he mentioned this more than twice as well;

* President Peter: For presiding over such an unorthodox meeting and for sending us all home too early;

* Alan Jarrott: For giving Geoff Bentley a bag of supposed ‘peptides’ as a booby prize for getting 8 out of 8 in last week’s footy tips. Geoff went against his own side St Kilda to get that score. Shame Geoff, Shame;

* Alan Jarrott: For then offering PP David Efron the ‘peptides’ as he would know what to do with them???

..... and that’s an order!!!

PRESIDENT’S REPORTPresented by President Peter Sherman

Graeme Watson: Graeme reminded us again about the ‘Guess Whose Coming to Dinner’ on Saturday 1 June. We have 13 couples so far and could do with more. Its BYO and if you are interested in this very popular Event email Graeme on: [email protected]

Geoff Bentley: Geoff spoke again about the Brighton Lunch on Friday 24 May and mentioned that Sonya Stephen CEO of the Cathy Freeman Foundation would say a few words. He mentioned the great auction prizes including a photo with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Sonya Stephen: Sonya spoke to us about the Cathy Freeman Foundation and about its early beginnings. It all started when Cathy had finished with running and contemplated what to do next - even considering joining a circus and becoming a waitress in the USA. Cathy decided to use her profile to give back to community and a cause close to her heart. In 2007 she decided to support one of the largest remote Indigenous communities in Australia through education. This was Palm Island with approximately 1000 children and around 4000 inhabitants. This is the 4th most disadvantaged community in Australia with 90% unemployment. Cathy’s Foundation is having a direct impact on positive education outcomes on Palm Island and aims to help close the education gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia. Some of the proceeds from the Brighton Lunch will go to this wonderful cause.

SECRETARY’S ANNOUNCEMENTSPresented by Secretary PP Arthur Hubbard

Pres Peter welcomed all Members and guests.

He gave a special welcome to our guest speaker last week our own Local identity Danny

Vaughan the owner and founder of our very well known Pantry Restaurant. The Pantry is not only a Brighton institution but known throughout Melbourne. Danny will have a very interesting story to tell.

Also with us last week was Sonya Stephen who is the CEO of the Cathy Freeman Foundation who gave us a 5 minute talk on the work of the Foundation. Peter pointed out that the Brighton Lunch will be held the following Friday in conjunction with the Foundation.

Our Team from Cambodia has returned following a very valuable and successful trip to Cambodia. They installed water tanks and an irrigation system for a village near Phnom Penh and intend to follow up with two further villages in the near future. Rotary Foundation has already granted $4000 for this project and have indicated its support for further funding.

Peter mentioned that the AGM would be held next meeting to approve the audited accounts.

Peter also said that The Brighton Lunch was still seeking more tables for this great Event which is on 24 May.

2013Round 8 Wrap Up: Go Marina go! Things will be fun at the Donnellan’s this week with Marina once again reminding us all that when she puts her mind to it she can be quite the tipper. With Marina and Darren both on 47 overall Darren will have to improve on his miserly 6 compared to Marina’s 8!Congratulations for the week: The big congratulations must go to Marina but there were a couple of other tippers we need to acknowledge. Michael Rundle has not been well for a wee bit but he still managed a very credible 6, well done Michael. Brendan Kierce tipped 7 winners but managed a “0” margin, not bad work Brendan. I am so pleased the mighty Eagles didn’t let you down. Daryl Forge has been putting in wells in Cambodia for 3 weeks but still scored 7 and a top ten finish. IVAN’S HACKERSSaturday, 18 May - Highlights

IVAN’S HACKERS

A grey and damp morning greeted a cricket team of Hackers. We welcomed Tony Morgan, a friend and work colleague of Bruce Crossley and international golfer, resplendent in his Pebble Beach cap. It was also impressive to see Rob Foster, who had extricated himself from his week long sick bed. And we were pleased to see our smiling President-in-waiting Bruce Newham back in action.

The golf was a mix of the fantastic and the familiar. Late arrival Cameron Spence again blitzed the field with a 39 off the stick (5 pars) and also won the handicap trophy. Kavin Crundell got the only birdie and Rob Foster was only two inches off another Venus trophy. Ron Stark got the longest drive with a huge hit to set himself up for a par on the final hole. Nobody made the green on the nearest-the-pin hole and Bruce Crossley found the Venus Pond twice to record a Rotary 9.

A long overdue audit was performed on Ron´s “hole-in-one” money box. It was found to contain a kitty of about $1,300, with one dollar still to come from PP Tom from last week. It was also announced that every “Hole-in-One” winner would earn half the kitty, with the other half remaining for subsequent winners and general Hacker funds. So, our next hole-in-one is worth $650. From Bruce Crossley (Deputy Captain)
