About Island ChildEvery year in spring, The Beachcomber

publishes this guide, a directory of sum-mer camps and classes, as well as child care programs and preschools.

We hope it helps island families plan for the long days of summer ahead. We are big believers in the value of lying in the green grass and watching the clouds float by. But we are also big believers in summer adventures — whether they involve creating with clay, taking to the stage in a musical or perfecting moves on the soccer field. Vashon offers op-portunities for all those activities and a multitude of others.

All too soon summer will pass, and many families are already looking ahead to fall and opportunities for their young-est children.

We hope the information here will help people chart their course as sum-mer approaches — and fall follows swiftly on its heels.

— Susan Riemer, editor

From the sponsorWhat sets Vashon apart, what truly

makes this a special place, are the many people who work diligently to make it so. At John L. Scott Vashon, we count ourselves fortunate to live and work in this special place.

The ability to give back to the community, especially our children and those individuals and organizations who support them, is truly a pleasure. Please join us in the support of our Island kids.

The school’s students spend a lot of time outside even when it’s raining, running, jumping and playing in puddles. This will be Little Tree’s 21st year, but Montessori education was established well over 100 years ago. The school’s environment is intentional, peaceful and active; it is wonderfully tailored to the social and learning needs unique to this age. The school begins and ends each day outside with lots of play time. Inside, the classroom is arranged for children to be able to do many things without the immedi-ate help of an adult. During this time of formative development, children are especially drawn to activities that involve independence, as well as using their hands, learning language, movement, sensory perception, understanding the order of people, places and things, social skills and per-sonal relationships. Children are drawn to these areas because they are in a time-sensitive period for learning about them, which creates a driving force for their actions and behavior. Children thrive when we feed their curiosity about the real world, respect and protect their interests, preferences, concentration and, most importantly, their child-hood.
