A ten-week course,one evening per week,leading to the Speech New Zealand Certificatein Professional Speaking
Does the idea of having to give aspeech send shivers down yourspine?
You are not alone, but if you are amigrant and English is not your firstlanguage, it is even more challenging.
Applying for a job, introducing acolleague at work or making small talkat a social event all require speakingskills.
Here is where the ProfessionalSpeaking for Migrants course can help.
The course syllabus was developed bySpeech New Zealand. The course itselfis delivered by Multicultural Taurangaand ends with a certificate fromSpeech New Zealand.
Course start:Wed, 11 October 2017, 6:30pm
Venue:Tauranga Multicultural Centre
You will learn:
● Speaking in front of an audienceabout your job, skills, communityinterests, or about any interestingand/or memorable experiences.
● Making social speeches, such asintroducing a speaker, farewell acolleague, or speaking at a dinner,funeral, weddings, accepting a prizeor award, etc.
● Participating in work-related roleplays such as dealing withcomplaining customers or doing jobinterviews.
● Reading something aloud (e.g. anarticle, book extract, etc.) in a waythat maintains the interest andunderstanding of an audience.
● Developing and presenting talksusing audio-visual media, like MSPowerPoint.
● Listening to talks and being able toprovide constructive feedback.
You will also have a lot of fun. Learnfrom your classmates as they learnfrom you!
What will you learn?
Our goal is for you to gain theconfidence and skills to be acaptivating speaker at interviews,in social situations or at businessevents.
This course is for:
● Migrants who despite having a fairlygood knowledge of English need todevelop their ability to speak withconfidence and clarity.
● Newcomers who are preparing forjob interviews or who want to gainpromotion at work.
● Newcomers wanting to developtheir listening skills when inconversation with those who speak‘New Zealand English’.
● Migrants who do, or want to do,interpreting and translatingbetween their first language andEnglish.
Who will benefit from this course?
Anyone with a good level ofEnglish language can enrol.
No course fee
The delivery of the course is fundedand is therefore free to students.
However, this funding only covers theteaching of the course, the resources,the administration and the venue, butnot the Speech New Zealandexamination fee.
How much does it cost?
The fee for the examination is $134.00. *)
The examination is conducted by anapproved examiner, not the coursefacilitator, therefore a fee applies.
Because the examination is a vital andintegral part of the course, it ismandatory. The course cannot betaken without the examination.

Exam on 16 December 2017
The examination consists of thefollowing elements:
● Give a seven-minute talk to anaudience.
● Deliver a three-minute social speech.● Read for approximately two
minutes.● Answer questions.● Participate in a role play.
There are a number of good reasonswhy we do the examination at the endof the course:
● The Speech New ZealandProfessional Speaking syllabusgives the course a clear, well-designed structure and purpose.
● By participating in the examination,each student gets detailed, writtenfeedback from an accredited SpeechNew Zealand examiner on theirperformance in spoken English.
● Students who pass the examinationcan add a well-recognised SpeechNew Zealand qualification to theirCVs. They receive a certificate toprove it.
Paying the examination fee providesadded motivation for students tosucceed and acquire a proud sense ofachievement.
What is the examination like?
Who will teach this course? Your course presenter is Pieter deZwart, a migrant himself. He is anexperienced educator and passionateabout empowering people throughknowledge.
Pieter has been working withnewcomers to New Zealand andhelping them with their settlement invarious roles for more than twodecades.
In 1997 he set up the first free migrantsettlement workshops. In 1999 hestarted an Immigration Clinic at a localCitizens Advice Bureau and, afterqualifying as a career guidancecounsellor, also a Careers Clinic.
For the last five years Pieter hasorganised and presented onsiteworkplace workshops on various topicssuch as CV writing, communication,leadership and conflict resolution skillsas well as Language, Literacy andNumeracy (LLN) and cultural diversityin workplaces.
His qualifications include: AdultTeaching, Industrial Psychology andSociology (HR), iTEFL and BusinessAdministration.
