We are all anxiously awaiting spring! As the days lighten, and the air freshens,

we feel a new spring in our step! It’s important that you all start thinking about

what you might want to do to start nurturing yourself as much as you nurture

and care for others. If you currently feel guilty about taking time for yourself

start small and just pick one thing you could fit in your week and be present in

that moment and that experience. Below are a few self-care ideas to try out

for spring!

Spring into Self-Care!

Watch the clouds

Practice deep breathing or

meditation

Go for a walk to get a little

fresh air

Have a picnic

Bring out your creative

side, and do something

artistic

Read for pleasure

Meet up with a friend

Take a road trip

Do something physically

active

ePortfolio Update It is time to begin thinking about developing your professional portfolio as a

requirement for your program of study and the department's assessment plan.

It is important that you begin becoming familiar with the ePortfolio

platform in D2L.

Advisors and/or clinical course instructors are available to help with

this process, should you experience hurdles or challenges along the

way. However, faculty are not responsible for teaching students how

to use ePortfolio.

For specific instruction in using the ePortfolio platform in D2L, the

IDEA lab has tutorials and training available. Check out the IDEA lab

website to find the resources that will help you develop your

professional portfolio. Likewise, the department graduate assistants

have received general training and would be happy to provide general

assistance.

Red Cross Volunteer Opportunity Greetings Professional Counseling Students, and I hope your semester is off to a good start!

For those of you who may not be aware, our department continues to develop a closer connection with the

Northeast Chapter of the American Red Cross (located in Oshkosh). We are making efforts to collaborate with

the Red Cross so that students in our program may properly register as Red Cross volunteers, engage in the

requisite Disaster Mental Health (DMH) Training, and be in a position for potential involvement/deployment

with a faculty supervisor/s when local, regional, or national disasters occur. The primary idea is to have a con-

sistent team of trained volunteers available for deployment (typically a two-week commitment).

I am excited to announce that our department will be offering its Second-Annual Red Cross Training Day on

Friday, April 25th, 2014 from 9:00am – 5:00pm in Sage 2212. Specifically, Drs. Lindsey and Scofield will

be leading students in two courses that are an integral part of becoming a DMH Volunteer:

9:00am – 12:00pm – Foundations of Disaster Mental Health

12:00pm – 1:00pm – Lunch break

1:00pm – 5:00pm – Psychological First Aid

The department faculty has made a commitment to having this opportunity infused as an ongoing component

for interested students in our program – there is no charge for this training. To get started, those interested

may utilize the following link to complete their volunteer applications:

Red Cross Volunteer Application

You will note that there are two volunteer application formats: Adult (for those currently 25 and older), and

Young Adult (for those under 25) – please be sure to select the appropriate application. When you have com-

pleted and submitted your on-line volunteer application, please contact Dr. Lindsey and let him know that you

have done so and are interested in participating in the April 25th training. Please note that there are a couple of

on-line training modules that all April training participants will need to complete prior to April 25th. With that

said, I’ll ask that you complete your volunteer application as soon as possible and make contact with Dr.

Lindsey so that you may be guided in the next steps of this process.

Please note that students from all three emphases are welcome and encouraged to participate in this

opportunity.

For the 25 students who participated in this training through our department in 2013, please be aware that that

there will be upcoming opportunities in which you could be involved this summer and into the fall. There will

be a large-scale mock-disaster operation that will be conducted in Oshkosh this summer, and those of you that

are trained could play a vital role in this exercise. In addition, there will be another three-day Red Cross

training conference this fall in Oshkosh (dates are yet to be determined), to include a number of interesting

sessions to attend and potential presentation opportunities for those interested. An added benefit- this confer-

ence is typically free of charge! More information will follow in regard to these upcoming opportunities.

To summarize, if you are interested in the April 25th training, please complete your on-line volunteer ap-

plication with the Red Cross and then make contact with Dr. Lindsey by Friday, March 21st. Dr.

Scofield and I look forward to working with those of you who wanting to take part in this wonderful

opportunity!

Truly - Dr. Lindsey

CACREP

Reaccreditation

The Department of Professional Counseling is pleased to announce that the

Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs

(CACREP) reaccreditation on-site visit was completed February 9th through 12th,

2014. As you may be aware, CACREP is an independent council recognized by the

Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit Master’s degree programs

in Counseling. The three-person visiting team provided a comprehensive and

objective review and verification of all components of the department’s expansive

self-study, and including an addendum, which were written over the past year and

a half beginning in Summer 2012. The team met with faculty, staff, current students,

alumni, site supervisors, and campus administrators during its three day visit.

Your Department of Professional Counseling is honored to have met standards

across all program emphases including School Counseling, Student Affairs and

College Counseling, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. This is in addition to

meeting extensive standards throughout the three main bodies of the self-study

defined by Section I – The Learning Environment: Structure and Evaluation; Section

II – Professional Identity; and Section III – Professional Practice.

Having received the final review letter from the team in late February outlining

results from the on-site visit, the next step in the process is to provide CACREP

with our Institutional Response within 30 days (March 24, 2014) that addresses

suggestions, recommendations, and any standards not met. Once completed, the

department will await the determination by the CACREP Board when it meets in

July 2014 to render formal accreditation decisions. We are extremely hopeful,

given the team’s initial response following their review visit, that the department

will receive its full eight-year reaccreditation!

INDIA 2014 During the January Interim, a group of Professional Counseling Students embarked on

an 18 day journey to India. Our journey began literally sprinting through the London

Airport, and it felt like we didn’t stop until we returned safely nearly 3 weeks later.

While abroad, our group traveled to Dehli, India’s capital, Varanasi, one of the oldest

cities in the world, and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. Our group connected with

multiple schools, charities, and organizations in each of the cities. The people that we

met, and the connections that we made, can only be described as life changing. If you

would like to get a play-by-play of our journey, please feel free to look at our blog

which includes daily reflections, and links to hundreds of pictures! Namaste!
