Futuro impatto dell’osteoartrosi nella popolazione italiana
L’artrosi: una malattia subdola, insidiosa e sottovalutata
• Osteoarthritis is already one of the ten most disabling diseases in developed countries.
World Health Organization
• Osteoarthritis is already one of the ten most disabling diseases in developed countries.
• Farming 1-9 years increases the risk of osteoarthritis 4.5 times; farming 10 or more years increases the risk 9.3 times.

• 80% of those with osteoarthritis will have limitations in movement, and 25% cannot perform their major daily activities of life.

Dati epidemiologici
• Study examiners characterize a person as having OA on the basis of symptoms and physical examination findings. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey I (NHANES I) showed that 12.1% of the US population ages 25–74 years had clinically defined OA of some joint.
• In Italy the European Project on Osteoarthritis evidenced that 55% of the sample aged between 65 and 74 years had clinical OA. The percentage became 69% in those aged >75 years.
Clinical evaluation
Dati epidemiologici
• The age standardized prevalence of radiographic knee OA in adults age ≥ 45 was 19.2% among the participants in the Framingham Study and 27.8% in the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project (6). In the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), approximately 37% of participants age >60 years or older had radiographic knee OA

Exercise and dietary weight loss in overweight and obese older adults with
knee osteoarthritis: The arthritis, diet, and activity promotion trial.
Arthritis Rheum 2004; 50: 1501-10
Stephen P. Messier et al. Older Americans Independence Center,
Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina
Conclusion: The combination of modest weight loss
plus moderate exercise provides better overall
improvements in self-reported measures of function
and pain and in performance measures of mobility in
older overweight and obese adults with knee OA
compared with either intervention alone.

• AGE
– only one study, young , elderly =
• GENDER
– no differences between sexes
• OBESITY
– uncertain, recreational activity =, strenuous activity
• BODY COMPOSITION

• INJURIES
– meniscal and tendon lesions
• MALALIGNEMENT
– Only one study on varus knee (gait analysis)
