GENERAL INFORMATION

The VILLI product line with its wide range of colors and sizes givesplanners and designers all the scope they require to put their ideasinto practice. Outstanding design for tiles and mosaics and the various surfaces offer unlimited creative possibilities. The profounddepth of our products reflected in the interplay of light and shadowcreates living spaces with a sense of well-being unknown hitherto.This is the expression of stylish luxury and elegance.

The Villi name stands for variety and perfection. The product rangeincludes 6 square field tiles, 8 rectangular field tiles and a variety of

mosaics mounted on nets. The modular design of these sizes com-bined with absolute dimensional accuracy of every VILLI productallows for a perfect combination of any formats. Our mosaics, witha joint width of only 1/8”, are preset on 12” x 12” mesh sheets, ensuring a perfect fit. When the mosaics are used for trimmings orornamental elements, these mesh sheets can be cut to any size asnecessary. When using Villi products in underwater applications, it isimportant to eliminate any hollow spaces underneath the tile. For thisreason, mosaics for underwater use are face mounted, using foil,which is a special order item.

The delicate coat on the top side and a sub-sequent second fusing process give the surface a matte, slightly rough touch. Thatmeans the surface has not been sand- blasted and has closed pores. This makes itresistant to finger prints, and grease stainsare easier to clean.

INSTALLATIONS


Please read these installation instructions carefully before beginning installation!

VILLIGLAS is a high-quality, architecturalbuilding material. Installation of large formatglass tiles requires skillful techniques andtraining, and it is essential to adhere strictly tothe relevant instructions for installation. Forthis reason installation should only be carriedout by properly trained professionals. Theowner or end user of the tiles is responsiblefor determining the acceptability of the pro-duct for the particular installation being con-sidered. If the customer has any doubt as towhether the tile is suited to the applicationbeing considered it is strongly suggested acall be made to Villi USA to discuss the con-cern. In addition, all tiles should be dry-laidand examined for variation and shading priorto installation. VILLI USA assumes NO responsibility for pro-blems related to product installation and Noadjustments will be made after installation.

Important factors for a successful Villi installation:

SUBSTRATESAn unstable substrate can cause fracturingof any tile after installation. It is of utmost im-portance to let a cement mortar bed cure fora recommended 7 days for wall installations& 28 days for floor applications. An uncuredsubstrate can cause stress fractures in thetile due to the ongoing curing. The substratemust be sound, secure and completely level,plumb and square to within 1/8” in 8’ to meetindustry tolerance standards. There must beno abrupt irregularities such as screw or nailheads. Make sure that the substrate is com-pletely free of dirt, debris, grease, paint, sea-lers and curing compounds.

SETTING MATERIALSIt is recommended that a white, thin-set mor-tar modified with polymer or latex, compliantwith ANSI 118.4 and recommended for glasstile installation by the setting material manu-facturer be used to set the tile. White thin-setreflects the most light and creates thebrightest color through the glass. Please seeour material recommendations at the end ofthis document.

Unacceptable Setting materials:• Organic adhesive (mastic), due to yello-

wing and low bond strengths• Epoxy, due to lack of flexibility. This mate-

rial also degrades and yellows in sunlight.

ANTI-FRACTURE / WATER PROOF MEMBRANEAn Anti-fracture / water proof membraneshould be used in all wet areas and is advi-sed for all installations.

EXPANSION / CONTROL JOINTSExpansion joints are essential for the successof most tile installations. Existing joints in sub-surfaces must be carried through tile work.Install control joints where the tile abuts re-straining surfaces, around the perimeter ofthe tile installation and where two substratesof different composition meet in the sameplace. Therefore silicone caulking sealantmust be used in all corner joints in the placeof grout. Follow instructions on expansionjoints EJ171-02 or current year in the Hand-book for Ceramic Tile Installation publishedby the Tile Council of America. Expansionjoint requirements will vary depending onsubstrate, climate and size of installation. Anarchitect and engineer should be consultedwhen specifying the exact number and loca-tion of each expansion joint. GROUT JOINT WIDTHVilli glass tiles should be set with a minimum of1/8 inch grout joint. We also recommend non-sanded grout to prevent any scratching on thetile surface. If applications call for sandedgrout, we recommend the use of a soft rubberfloat to minimize the possibility of scratchingthe tile. After installation, it is recommendedthat the tile be cleaned with a commonly ac-cepted grout cleaner, e.g. Aqua Mix (1-800-366-6877) or TEC (1-800-832-9023).

CUTTING VILLI TILES• Water-jet cutting – A water jet machine is anexcellent option for cutting Villi products,especially for more difficult cuts. There is adifference in cutting glass versus stone. Thewater jet machines are set to 50-60,000 psi.For glass, it must be reduced to 18-20,000psi. Also, there should either be a change tothe metering disc to restrict the amount ofsand that is used or a vacuum assist pumpshould be used. The water jet company cancontact Villi for any further questions.• Power Outlet holes or other detailed cutting– When two cuts intersect it is crucial to drillat the intersecting point. Using a wet drill bitdesigned for drilling glass tile, drill half waythrough the tile from the front, turn it over andthen drill half way through from the back,meeting in the middle. This is necessary toavoid chipping and stress fractures once the

tile is set. These types of cuts can be difficultand water jet cutting is an excellent option. A good result is often achieved by holding theglass tile at a 45 degree angle while cuttingwith a wet saw. Be sure to use a blade desi-gned for use with glass tile. This helps mini-mize chipping during the cutting process.

To prevent rough edges, glass tiles must becut extremely slowly.

ASSEMBLY OF SANITARY INSTALLATIONSWhen assembling sanitary installations (toi-lets, sinks, mirrors, etc.) by means of screws,place suitable plastic washers on the screwsbetween the bearing surface and the glasstile. When you tighten the screws, the plasticwashers ensure an even distribution of pres-sure and prevent the tiles from breakingunder the stress.

PLACING HARDWARE AND ACCESSORIES• All hardware anchors or blocking for heavyobjects must be set directly into the structure.Do not put any weight loads on the imme-diate substrate (cementitious board, green-board, hardibacker, etc.) and never on to theglass tile itself.• Shower doors and glass panel hardwareshould be set before setting glass tile. Donot set heavy items directly onto the glass.Blocking is required where doors attach tothe wall. This reduces stress to the wall.• The glass must be physically separated fromtowel bars, light fixtures, hooks, or any otherhardware. Use cork material or 1/16” rubbersheeting to separate hardware from the glasstile. Cut to size and shape as needed.

LIMITED WARRANTYVILLIglas products are produced in a world-wide patented procedure. The organic colorpigments are melted into the glass thereforeno corrosion can occur and change the color.VILLIglas products are produced from homo-geneous glass slates; they don’t absorb waterand are therefore frost resistant. VILLIglasproducts can be installed in and outdoors.VILLIglas manufactures glass tile products inaccordance with industry standards, and theyare warranted to be reasonably free of defectsin materials and workmanship. When properlyhandled and correctly installed, VILLIglas isguaranteed to conform (within accepted in-dustry standards and tolerances) to the ma-nufacturer’s declared specifications. Villi USAcannot accept responsibility for the perfor-mance of these products after they are instal-led. Except for the warranties set forth above,Villiglas makes no other warranties, expres-sed or implied, including but not limited to anyimplied warranties of merchantability or fit-ness for a particular purpose.


INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

GENERAL GUIDELINES

Natural coloring of the glassThe color of the final consignment may de-viate slightly from the color of the originalsample, but this does not constitute any rea-son to return the goods. Glass always has itsown natural coloring, which increases as thethickness/ density increases. This natural co-loring is reduced with Opti-Glass, but not im-possible. We would draw attention to the factthat the color may deviate from the original insubsequent orders.

Laying and groutingBasically, the criteria for working with VILLIglass tiles are the same as for ceramic tiles.We recommend white thinset mortar for set-ting VILLI products. It is important to use onlyadhesives and joint compounds recommen-ded by VILLI (see list on the last page of thisinformation). The handling guidelines givenby the adhesive manufacturer must be ob-served. The buttering-floating method mustbe used for setting large-sized tiles and, inparticular, on the out-side of buildings and forfacades.The VILLI glass tiles and mosaics should notbe grouted until 24 hours after setting. Pleasealso observe the manufacturer’s instructionsfor the joint compound. The joint width shouldbe 2 – 3 mm = 1/8 inch. It is best to begincleaning 20 – 25 minu¬tes after applying thejoint compound.

Guidelines for cleaning when laying(see also final building cleaning instructions)In order to achieve an optimal result in layingVILLI glass tiles and mosaics, it is absolutelyessential to observe the following points:• Do not use any mechanical aids such asmetal putty knives or blades, as these cancause damage to the tile surface• Any traces of adhesive left on the tiles mustbe removed immediately, using a dampsponge. Dried residual adhesive is far harderto remove.• After grouting the tiles, extreme care mustbe taken to frequently change the cleaningwater. Excessively dirty water automaticallyproduces a residue of cement, and so pos-sible chemical reactions on the tile surfaceand any grains of sand which it may containcould scratch the glass surface.• As soon as the joints are dry, we recom-mend polishing the entire surface with a dry,lint-free cloth.If you observe the above points, you willachieve a brilliant result.

Scoring and breakingScoring should be done using a glass cutter(tile cutter, e.g. hand cutter 6 or 8 mm car-bide wheel housed in a ball bearing casing.The breaking is then done evenly, applying aconstant pressure, using glazier’s pliers. Thebreak edges should then be sanded with

sanding pads, to minimise risk of injury. Theligher you score (apply the least amount ofpressure to score the tile) the better it snaps– the glass tile does not break because of theforce, it breaks because of the heat genera-ted fromt he carbide wheel.

Cutting and drilling• Glass tiles can easily be cut using a handglass cut¬ter or a wet saw. The cut edgesshould then be sanded using sanding pads,to minimize the risk of injury. First, mark outthe piece which needs to be cut out. Wherethe mark-out lines intersect, drill a hole with atleast 5mm diameter. The cutting should thenbe done using a water-cooled glass saw. Thesaw should thereby be positioned at right an-gles to the tile.• Holes with a smaller diameter can be drilledusing a dia¬mond drill suitable for drillingglass, while constantly using cooling water.When drilling holes starting from a 10 mmdia¬meter, care must be taken to drill on bothsides. First drill on the colored side halfwaythrough the tile, then drill on the glass side.This is necessary to avoid chipping the colorand potential breaking due to stress. It is ad-visable to use a rabbet or similar aid. Whiledrilling, it is essential to use cooling water.• When using a wet saw (may result in chip-ping top and bottom of tile causing an irre-gular edge and some color loss) onlyrecommended when cut area will be coveredby more than ¼: of switch plate or molding.Wet saws, generally are not recommendedfor cutting VILLIglas. Most wet saws cannotcut the tile without excessive vibrations,which cause chipping. If you do, use a GlassBlade 10” wet saw blades are made specifi-cally for glass. In addition to that the tile hasto be cut extremely slowly: Example: Onepiece of 4x4 glass tile should take approx. 1-1/2 to 2 minutes to cut. Use masking tape orblue painters tape all the way around the tilewhen the cut is being made and cutting thetile upside down will prevent the backingfrom chipping as much and will put the worstedge on the front of the tile. Sand the edgesafter cutting and re-polish them if needed.

Assembly of sanitary installationsWhen assembling sanitary installations (toi-lets, washstands, mirrors, etc.) using screws,it is essential to put suitable plastic washerson the screws between the bearing surfaceof the sanitary installation and the VILLI glasstiles. The plastic washers create an even dis-tribution of pressure when tightening thescrews, thus preventing the tiles from brea-king due to stress.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAYING VILLI PRODUCTS

Kitchen areasVILLI tiles should never be laid directly nextto an open flame (e.g. on gas stoves). VILLItiles should be at least 30 cm / 12 inches froman open flame.

Wet areas / Underwater applicationsWhen installing VILLI products underwater,care must be taken to ensure that they arelaid without creating any hollow spaces. Thisis why mosaics are applied to film instead ofnetting at the factory. Simply remove the foilonce the tile adhesive has set and grout asnormal.

Metallic colorsFor trouble-free laying of the two colors TopSteel and Copper, we recommend using onlyless aggressive adhesives (for recommen-ded adhesives see back page). Otherwise,changes of colour may occur for which weaccept no liability. Should you wish to use anyother types of adhesive, we ask you to kindlyconsult our Technical Department [email protected] to directly consult theadhesive manufacturer. Metallic mosaics areapplied to film/foil on face instead of nettingat the factory. Simply remove the foil once thetile adhesive has set and grout as normal.

Deco Shining Gold / SilverPlease take care to rinse the tiles well withwater when laying decor tiles in Gold/Silverprint and Spectral, to prevent any coarse par-ticles of dirt from scratching the surface. Oneimportant precondition for grouting ShiningGold/ Silver tiles is that the joint sealer shouldon no account be coarse-grained. Pleaseapply the joint sealer using a jointing planemade of rubber: never use metal, as metalcan scratch the pattern and the glass sur-face.

SpectralEach Spectral tile is unique: as a rule, the ti-tanium dioxide coating is aligned horizontally,however every tile is different. Before youbegin laying the tiles, you should set out afew tiles and decide how you want the finis-hed “pattern” to look. The surface has a lightrainbow pattern, and therefore offers manydifferent possibilities for laying. One impor-tant precondition for grouting Spectral tiles isthat the joint sealer should on no account becoarse-grained. Please apply the joint sealerusing a jointing plane made of rubber: neveruse metal, as metal can scratch the Spectraland the glass surface.

Relief / Deco Structured Relief / FossilPlease note that tiles in the Deco StructuredRelief and Fossil series must be wet-cut (RubiTools brand or GEMINI brand wet saw per-forms well in cutting Villiglas).


CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS FOR GLASS TILES

General InformationMarket research, studies and, aboveall, practical experience confirm thatglass scores excellently well in com-parison with other covering materi-als. The decisive criteria include,above all, long-lasting beauty andeasy cleaning, together with highfunctionality, in both private homesand public areas. When usingcleaning agents, please observe theinstructions for use and the dangerwarnings given by the manufactu-rers. We cannot accept any liabilityfor damage caused through failureto follow these instructions and war-nings. Never use cleaning agentswhich contain hydrofluoric acid orany of its compounds (fluoride).Even when heavily diluted, these willcorrode the glass tiles.• Important: When cleaning, alwaysalso take the surrounding materialsinto account!

Basic GuidelinesThere is an old saying which has notlost its wisdom: “dirt which is nevercarried inside need never becleaned away!” Shoe-scraper grids,doormats and walk-off areas in frontof the entrance area stop a greatdeal of dirt from getting in. Optimalcleaning results can be achievedusing clean water and a microfibrecloth: simply dampen the cloth andpolish the glass tiles/mosaics – andfinished! In the event of heavy soi-ling, glass should always be rinsedwith clean water be-forehand, to re-move dust and silica sand. Ifcleaning agents must be used, thenthese should contain a small amountof alcohol or acid, and be used witha microfibre cloth.• Caution: Please do not use anyblades or lambskin – both thesecleaning aids can damage theglass! All cleaning devices must al-ways be free of “grainy” elements.

Cleaning:A distinction is made between thefinal building cleaning, basiccleaning and maintenance cleaning(daily cleaning).Final building cleaning or firstcleaningThis refers to the cleaning at the endof building work, immediately aftercompleting the surface. After theheaviest dirt has been rinsed off, thethorough cleaning is carried outusing a suitable cleaning agent.

JointsJoints must always be protectedthrough wetting them with water be-forehand, so that through absorbingthe water, the joint sealer cannot ab-sorb any further liquids (cleaningagents), and therefore cannot suffercorrosion. Acidic cleaning agentscorrode the (cement-based) jointsealer. After use, rinse thoroughly andneutralise if necessary.• Cement-based joint sealer: cleanwith cement residue remover• “Epoxy” joint sealer (clinics): cleanwith silicone remover

Tiles / MosaicsUsually cleaned using basic sanitarycleaning agents (phos-phoric acid –pH 0.5 – in a concentrated form: 5 –10%), to achieve the highest possi-ble degree of cleanliness.

FacadesEach facade must undergo a finalcleaning after being laid or mecha-nically mounted. Mechanically-heldfacades pre-ferably require a neutralcleaning to remove oily and greasydirt produced during assembly,while conventionally cemented fa-cades require acid-based cleaningto remove the cement residue.Spectral fine-finish glass in facadesis self-cleaning when directly expo-sed to rain.

Basic cleaning (precision building cleaning)This is usually carried out usingbasic sanitary cleaning agents(phosphoric acid – pH 0.5 – in a con-centrated form: 5 – 10%), to achievethe highest possible degree of cleanliness.

Maintenance cleaning, cleaning for daily useThe “everyday cleaning” is trouble-free and will be necessary at varyingintervals, according to the amount ofdirt and use: weekly, daily, or severaltimes a day in the event of espe ciallyintensive use. Generally, water anda microfibre cloth suffice for main-tenance cleaning. We recommendcleaning with citric acid cleaningagents (pH 2 – 2.5) in sanitary facili-ties. Cleaning agents containingspecial care agents are not neces-sary and may even cause problemsif continually used: sticky layers ofgrease, wax and plastic can buildup, which not only look unsightly, butare also bad for hygiene, safety(danger of slipping) and cleaning.

Sanitary areasIf cleaning agents are used, theseshould contain a small amount of al-cohol, be free of tensides or beslightly acidic.

Living areasNormal dirt can be most easily re-moved using slightly alkaline (up topH 10) or neutral cleaning agents.Cleaning in clinics:Surface disinfectants can be recom-mended with no problem: alcohol-based, spray-on and pour-ondisinfectants, hand disinfectants,wound disinfectants.

CLEANING DIFFERENT VILLI SURFACES

Glossy and MatteClean using clean water and micro-fibre cloth, alcohol-based / tenside-free cleaning agent – acidicmaintenance cleaning agent (sani-tary areas)The “Matte” surface is virtually non-porous (i.e. grease- and oil-resistant)and should be cleaned in the sameway as glass or a mirror surface.CAUTION: Do NOT USE aggressiveLIME-SCALE REMOVERS!

Fossil, Structured ReliefThe same method as in the final buil-ding cleaning is recommended, butin addition it is essential to tho-roughly clean the surface “grooves”.Immediately rinse with a lot of waterand clean the surface using cementresidue remover. Clean using cleanwater and microfibre cloth, alcohol-based / tenside-free cleaning agent– acidic maintenance cleaningagent (sanitary areas)

SpectralThe Spectral coating is a vaporisa-tion with titanium dioxide – it is anti-bacterial, neutralizes odours and isself-cleaning in combination withoxygen. The catalyser titanium di-oxide, which is burned into theglaze, triggers a reaction betweenlight, oxygen and air humidity.

Activated oxygen thereby forms,which destroys bacteria, fungus,algae and mosses. Spectral fine-fi-nish tile surfaces are hydrophilic: in-stead of rolling off in beads, thewater forms a thin film. This causesdirt to be washed away, and is the-refore removed effortlessly. This uni-que type of fine finish is practicallyindestructible. The photocatalyticfine finish, which is activated just bynormal room lighting or natural light,remains permanently.On façades, Spectral fine-finishglass is self-cleaning when directlyexposed to rain. Inside buildings,cleaning can be accomplishedusing considerably smaller amountsof cleaning agent and less effort.Spectral therefore noticeably lowersmaintenance costs and conservesthe environment. The use of film-for-ming cleaning agents impairs the ef-fectiveness of Spectral and shouldtherefore be avoided.

River Mosaic (mosaic pieces)The toughened safety glass used forthe manufacture of mosaic pieces isbasically more “delicate” than floatglass. The important thing is that, im-mediately after laying, the River Mo-saic should be cleaned (seerecommended final buildingcleaning) to remove any joint sealerresidue from the fine surface lines.Afterwards, thoroughly rinse withwater. Clean with clean water andmicrofibre cloth, alcohol-based / ten-side-free cleaning agent – acidicmaintenance cleaning agent (sani-tary areas)

Care should be given when using light colored Villiglas or light colored grout, use a white colored adhesive to prevent shadowing through the tileand visible thinset bubbles in the grout lines. Back-Buttering each piece of tile with the flat edge of the trowel will help to provide for a void free in-stallation; good contact with the mortar bed is also recommended — 100% coverage is needed!
