Launch of MOSAIC Mashriq MOSAIC in Horizon 2020
December 3rd
, 2015, JUST Jordan
Official Launch of the MOSAIC-MASHRIQ
ICT TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM
In recent years appeared a cluster phenomenon and an
unprecedented creation of centers of excellence. The
Technology Platforms play these roles. They a very
important in Europe in advising, driving and defining
strategic priorities in terms of research, development and
innovation for the coming years. They participate in the
implementation of SRIAs1, which inspire the European
Commission to plan priority programs. These strategic
agendas identify technological programs with real
economic and social impact to be developed for the next
20 years.
The main objective of MOSAIC is the creation of two
Technology Platforms (TP) in two regions of the
Mediterranean area: one TP-called MOSAIC
MAGHREB covering the Maghreb countries (Algeria,
Libya, Morocco, Tunisia) and another one called
MOSAIC-MASHREK covering the Mashrek countries
(Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria).
MOSAIC focuses on Information and Communication
Technologies (ICT), and how ICT can support common
societal challenges to the EU-MED; it addresses issues
for example in health and wellbeing, food and
agriculture, clean energy, transportation and risk
management for critical issues such as climate,
environment and security of societies.
This workshop/event aims to be a privileged place to
exchange ideas and strengthen dialogue between
academics and entrepreneurs, and between Mediterranean
and European stakeholders on key issues in terms of
research, development and innovation; and, to establish
working groups around common topics such as Big Data,
Cloud Computing, Smart Cities, Smart Systems and ICT
applied to Health, Environment, Energy, etc.
The main objective of this workshop/event is the official
launch of the MOSAIC MASHREK ICT Technology
Platform.

Launch of MOSAIC Mashriq MOSAIC in Horizon 2020
December 3rd
, 2015, JUST Jordan
Abstract:
Based on European Technology Platforms (ETPs) success story, a challenge for
Mediterranean countries (MED) and Jordan in particular is to create similar Technology
Platforms (MED-TPs) to strengthen R&D cooperation with Europe on Horizon 2020 ICT and
societal challenges where ICT plays a key role, e.g. Energy. The collaboration between ETPs
and MED-TPs will help at analyzing potential areas of cooperation between Europe and MED
around the thematic areas of Horizon 2020 and at producing Strategic Research Agendas as
tools to set up sustainable technical and scientific cooperation, to identify research and
innovation bottlenecks and to facilitate knowledge circulation (e.g., software and services,
networked electronic media, ICT for energy, etc).
The overall aim of EU research and innovation in information and communication (ICTs)
under Horizon 2020 is to bring the benefits of progress in these technologies to European
citizens and businesses; the EU investments in ICTs are expected to be significantly increased
under Horizon 2020 compared to the current EU research programmes (FP7). Horizon 2020
will support ICT in Science; ICT in industrial leadership and ICT in societal challenges. The
presentation will provide an overview of ICT in Horizon 2020.
The European Technology Platforms (ETPs) have been set up in 2005 with the objective to
organize the ICT sector. 10 years after, the stock is very good, ETP produce a lot of
documents which bring helps to the European Commission in the FP7 and H2020 work
program definition.
There are ETPs in different fields::
ICT: NESSI (Software and Services), Networld 2020 (Telecommunications), NEM (Media
and Contents), EUROB (RoboTICS), Photonics21, ECSEL (Embedded systems,
Nanotechnologies, Smart Systems Integration), ETP4HPC (High Performance Computing),
Transport: ACARE (Air), ERRAC (Railway), ERTRAC (Road), WATERBorne,
Energy: EU PV TP (Photovoltaic), TPWind (eolic), etc
etc
