In order to meet the ever demanding environmental
constraints for emissions and to provide protection for
downstream equipment, Alderley have developed a range
of high efficiency ceramic desanding hydrocyclones for the
removal of solids from produced water. Settling of solids in
equipment such as separators causes blockage and loss
of efficiency due to the reduction in residence time.
As part of the range of products for the treatment of
produced water, Alderley can offer three sizes of desanding
hydrocyclone complete with vessels which can be supplied
as stand alone units or part of a bespoke package to suit
the specific needs of the customer. The Alderley desanding
hydrocyclone is manufactured from high purity alumina and
represents the drive in Alderley policy towards design and
manufacturing using Best Available Technology and
incorporating continuous improvement.

Engineering Success for the Oil and Gas Industries
To accurately match our client’s diverse requirements,
Alderley provide desanding liners in the following three sizes:
The AP-25 Hydrocyclone. Offering the highest efficiency
in solids clarification from a 1” diameter hydrocyclone.
The AP-50 Hydrocyclone. Offering the optimum
performance balance between flow rate, pressure drop
and efficiency from a 2” diameter hydrocyclone.
The AP-80 Hydrocyclone. Offering high throughputs for
minimal loss of energy from a 3” diameter hydrocyclone.
The Alderley desanding hydrocyclone is designed to tolerate
higher pressure drops and can therefore pass higher flow-rates
at greater removal efficiencies and allow greater turndown of
the units. Alderley can therefore claim the most efficient design
of desanding hydrocyclone fitting in the most compact of
vessel, being highly advantageous to all offshore applications.
Oilfield applications for desanding hydrocyclone technology
usually fall into two categories:
Wellhead desanding where solids are removed at source
under pressure at the wellhead to protect all downstream
equipment.
Produced water desanding where produced water is
treated for discharge or re-injection purposes.
The AP-25, AP-50 and AP-80 range is ideally suited for
incorporation in packages of either type.
WELLHEAD DESANDING
In some production operations it is necessary to eliminate
sand at the front-end of the process. Whilst this protects all
downstream equipment from problems associated with
solids ingress, it does require the hydrocyclone to operate in
a high pressure, highly erosive and challenging multi-phase
environment. Alderley’s hydrocyclone design and
construction takes these factors into account and provides a
practical means of handling solids resulting from well start-
up and production fluids, plus specialised applications such
as under-balanced drilling.
PRODUCED WATER TREATMENT PACKAGES
Alderley have over 40 years experience designing and
fabricating purpose built packages for the oil and gas industry.
The Alderley desanders can be supplied as loose items, vessel
only or as part of a complete produced water treatment
package incorporating other Alderley supplied equipment.
Alderley supplied desanding vessels come equipped with
capacity for sand accumulation. This can either be part of
the desanding vessel (on-line removal) or as a separate
stand alone vessel (off-line removal). Accumulators can be
manual or automatic to suit client needs.
Alderley can supply and integrate desanding packages
with sand slurry transportation equipment, sand washing,
clean-up and disposal systems.
ADVANTAGES OF THE ALDERLEYDESANDING HYDROCYCLONEHigh efficiency design (removal down to 10 microns)
High on-line turndown (> 5:1)
Three standard sizes offering flexibility in design orcustom designed for wellhead applications
High erosion resistance
Hydrocyclones can be individually removable orcartridge design
Low maintenance design
Minimal control and instrumentation
Sand removal either continuous or batch
Easily integrated with solids clean-up and disposal systems
SOLIDS CLEANING
In the solids cleaning process, produced water is directed
into the base of the desanding hydrocyclone vessel via a
jetting nozzle to help fluidise the solids. The solids are then
sucked out of the vessel via an eductor which dilutes the
slurry streams and transports the solids into the sand wash
vessel accumulator. The solids are then recycled through the
sand wash hydrocyclone via a dedicated eductor which
uses higher pressure wash water as the motive force. This
recycle process continues until the oil has been stripped
from the solids to the required oil-on-solids concentration for
overboard discharge. The oily water reject exits the system,
usually passing to the degasser vessel.
During this recycling process, solids samples can be taken
to assess the cleaning efficiency and the level of oil still
entrained on the sand. These samples are used to set the
duration of the cleaning cycle required to ensure that the
solids have been cleaned to the specification required.
