19 August 2015 19 August 2015 Principal’s News Congratulations to all our students who sat NAPLAN tests this year. In every area tested, in both grades tested, preliminary data released to schools indicates that, on average, Jindalee students scored not only above the State average, but above the Australian average for the percentage of students scoring in the top two bands. While teachers and students have worked hard to get to this point we also thank parents for the continued support of their children and instilling in them the importance of their education. However, we do not stop here. There is still room for plenty of improvement across areas other than the top two bands and in all subject areas in our school. We urge parents to consider NAPLAN as one of many tests used in our school and to communicate with teachers to get the best idea of their child’s progress. Dogs on School Grounds A reminder to all parents that dogs are not permitted on our school grounds. Please refrain from bringing them into the grounds, particularly at drop-off and pick-up times. Dogs should not be lead on a leash, carried by hand or brought into the grounds in any other way. The exception to this rule is Assistance Dogs. Paperwork for Assistance Dogs should be brought to the school office in the first instance. Thank you to the many parents who have adhered to this rule in the best interest of our students, this year. Pets for Show and Tell If students wish to bring an animal for Show and Tell parents must first fill in a form at the office a minimum of two weeks before the Show and Tell date and have the animal’s presence in the classroom approved by the Principal. Immunisation and other paperwork will be requested for Domestic animals. All other animals will be considered on a case by case basis. We encourage children to bring photographs of their pets in preference to the pet itself. Student Absences Parents, please consider your child’s education when choosing to take lengthy trips away with your children. Yes, overseas trips and driving trips within Australia will be a learning experience for your children, but substantial periods of time away from the classroom cannot be replaced. Please travel within school holidays when possible. If you require more than one week off school for your child to travel you must complete a form to request the time off, from the school office. The same process exists in all State Schools. Unless your children are sick, we need them at school! Not only is school attendance compulsory, it is the key to your child’s success. Getting to Know … Donna Millar(Miss M), Music TeacherI grew up in Durban, South Africa andmoved to Australia when I was 11. Thefirst school I attended was actuallyright here at Jindalee State Schoolwhere I did grades 5, 6 and 7. It's atotal coincidence that I now happen towork at JSS.

My favourite childhood memory is the when television firstcame to South Africa. It would only be on between 3pm and10pm on certain days of the week. My family would gatherround to watch the Brady Bunch together and it was thehighlight of our week. The rest of the time my brother, sisterand I were outside, up trees, playing dress ups and findingcreative ways to entertain each other.

My friends and family would describe me as someonewho is warm hearted, who loves to laugh and is maybe a littlebit on the nutty side.

Before I came to Jindalee State School, I taught at anindependent school in Maleny as well as at various schoolson Sunshine Coast. I also taught after school youth musicensembles privately and did artist in residency programsaround Australia and in Asia.

I am most proud of my son Oscar. He is a kind, compassionate, gentle soul who always puts others beforehimself. He also happens to be a fantastic budding musician.

I would love to be really good at visual art. I am alwaysamazed by people who have the gift to draw or paint well. Ifind portraiture especially impressive. I still draw stick people.

If I could change anything about the world it would be forpeople to be more accepting and tolerant of each other. Welive in a country with so much diversity. I wish society couldembrace it more, learn from each other and accept everyonefor their differences.

Someone who inspires me is my niece Izzy. When she was13 a friend of ours lost her daughter to cancer. Izzy cut off allher hair to raise money for Shave for a Cure and raised closeto $6000. She is truly amazing!

On the weekends I love to escape the city and go and visitmy friends in Maleny where I lived for 9 years. I always lovethe fresh mountain air and how beautifully green and peacefulit is there.

People don’t know it but I’m good at ballet….well, at leastI used to be. I studied ballet very seriously from the age of5 – 17 and got through to the final round auditions for theAustralian Youth Ballet. These days I mostly dance in mykitchen (when no one is looking).

My all-time favourite movie is the 1968 classic ‘The Party’starring Peter Sellers. It was funny, heart-warming, crazy, sweet and bizarre. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wash anelephant in the lounge room and turn it into one massive poolparty!
