Principals Message Welcome Back Everyone!!! It was wonderful to see all our students and staff meet on our first day back under the COLA for morning assembly. It was SENSATIONAL to see so many of our students wearing FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM !!! I dont think I have ever seen so many BLACK SCHOOL SHOES ! So proud of our students taking such pride and value in our school uniform. Black school shoes are worn everyday and sports shoes (any colour Thursday for K-2 and Friday 3-6). Huge thank you to our community – parents and carers for ensuring your children came to school so ready for the 2020 school year. Our Kindergarten students started last Monday and we have five fabulous classes of eager students. It is wonderful to see most of them wave their family members off at lines and with backpack on backindependently walk to their classrooms and unpack their bags ready for learning. Congratulations Kindergarten. It is very normal for some students to take a little longer to settle. It is very hard as a parent to hug your child and leave them in the hands of the staff to support them in separating. Parents and carers YOU are doing such a great job in joining us in the partnership of learning. Let term 1 begin - the 2020 school is off to a brilliant start !!! Our Haneen ! Haneen Zreika (SLSO) is again chasing new goals and this time history !!! Haneen is preparing for her third season of AFL with the GWS Giants and has ALSO outlined a plan to play NRL with Canterbury Bulldogs in the Harvey Norman Premiership at the end of the AFL season !!!!! If this becomes her reality, she will be the first athlete to play in both womenscodes. She is an incredible role model for the students at our school and an incredible asset to the teaching and support programs in our school, We wish her all the very best as the first round with the Giants kicks off this Saturday !! Principals Message

Meet the Teacher Afternoons Parents and carers have received an invitation to meet their child’s class teacher next week. We will meet at 5pm in the school library as a stage group and introduce the team and hear about the plans the grade have. Then, you will accompany your child’s teacher to the classroom and your teacher will share routines and organisation. ‘Meet the teacher’ afternoon is an introduction to the year ahead. If you would like the opportunity to discuss your child individually, you are invited to make an appointment at another time. The teachers are very much looking forward to joining you in the partnership of learning.

Staffing News At the end of last term as you know, two Assistant Principal positions were advertised and I am delighted to announce that Hayley Campbell and Stevie MacFarlane were the successful candidates. We are delighted! This year Samantha Louchery, Lauren Davie and Annette Allen will be taking up new positions at new schools. They have been invaluable assets to our school over many years. We wish them both all the very best wishes for their future careers in education.

Over the holidays many families were impacted by the horrific fires in both NSW and Victoria as well as in South Australia. We were all effected by the smoke and the weather conditions across Sydney. IF you or your family were impacted during the holiday period, please advise us at school. Our school counsellor has provided all

teachers with some resources to support student trauma.

The Coronavirus Information has been provided by the media and through our school Facebook and Twitter page about the Coronavirus. Please note that the incubation period for the virus is 1-10 days. It is requested by the Health Minister Brad Hazzard and Minister of Education Sarah Mitchell that families who travelled to China during the school holidays stay at home for 14 days. As a school, we are supporting this recommendation and have spoken to a few families regarding their return date to Sydney. The Department of Education has been very supportive offering advice, as well as monitoring and supporting families.

Everyone is concerned about the health and wellbeing of ALL students at our school. We will continue to ensure hands are washed regularly with soap and learning environments and surfaces are cleaned daily.

I have had many parents express their concerns. I am advising parents of the information we have been provided and today I have had a number of conversations with staff and parents regarding this health matter. At any time our staff notice a student presenting with respiratory issues, the parent or carer is contacted immediately. Please note we as a school are vigilantly monitoring this situation.

Community Charter Schools are safe sites. This is a place for all children to learn, play and grow. Teachers and school staff are charged with the privilege of working with you and your children in the partnership of learning. From time to time students have conflict. All conflict is to be managed by teachers at school. If your child comes home and shares their day with you and there has been a problem, encourage them to come and tell the teacher the following day or call the office and a message will get to the teacher. Respect for self and each other is expected. At no time is a parent or carer to approach another child. The Community Charter is attached for you to read.

Bell times – what do they mean? A bell rings at 8.30am when the DUTY TEACHER comes on site. Students are to arrive at school at 8.30am. Students arriving before that need to attend the on site Kids CBASS – bookings can be made on 0478 515 437. When the music plays that is the signal for students to head to meet their teacher at their designated line up area at all breaks. Once the bell rings following the music ,the students are ‘ready to learn’.

See Saw Currently our teachers are using See-Saw. An app to communicate to parents about the learning happening in classrooms. Parents are invited to communicate via the app. Praise and feedback about learning and expressing joy in seeing their children learning is wonderful for teachers to read when they are sharing the day with you. In order for this communication to continue, staff have asked I revisit the conditions of engagement. A teacher’s day on site commences at 8.30am and concludes at 3.30pm, Many days teachers have meeting both before and after school with their colleagues in planning for future learning and evaluat-ing and assessing student learning. Staff also lead teams and we meet as a leadership team as well as K-6 staff for organisation and administration purposes. Staff all have up to three playground duties a week. With that in mind, if you engage with SeeSaw outside that time, please don’t expect a response from the teacher on the day. You will hear back from the teacher the following day. If it is an emergency, please contact our school office to set up a time to speak or meet with a teacher. At all times the priority for staff is the students’ education, safety and wellbeing. Department of Education have a duty of care to prioritise students. Parents and carers are invited to engage with teachers via SeeSaw and celebrate learning between the hours of 8am and 4pm. Teachers have families and commitments and before and after the times listed. Last year, we sadly had some problems with this. At no time is SeeSaw to be used by parents or carers to vent or lodge a complaint about an incident. Any issues arising are to be managed by contacting the school via email or call-ing to make a time to meet in person. We will review the use of SeeSaw at the end of term. SeeSaw is such a wonderful way to share the school day with our community.

Meeting with the Principal, Deputy Principals or Assistant Principals We are very happy to meet with parents to discuss issues that arise and plan with you to support your children. We do however ask you call to make an appointment as we often have meetings scheduled or in fact are in classrooms working alongside teachers and your children. We are also available via email if you send through an email to the school email and it will be directly forwarded to the relevant person.

Attendance One of our school targets this year is to ensure all students are in classrooms at 9am. Rolls will be marked at 9.05am and learning time will commence after that.

Students therefore, need to be at school BEFORE 9am. A teacher is on duty to supervise students in their designated areas at 8.30am. If students arrive after 9am, they are to go first to the office for a late note. This is deemed a partial absence and is monitored by the school and reported in the Semester 1 and 2 reports.

Parking around the school can be problematic. Please park and walk to the school if you are accompanying your child in the mornings. School finishes at 3pm. Staff supervise the back gate and the front crossing gate. Teachers will be bringing students not picked up by 3.10pm to the office and parents/carers will be called. Please note afterschool care is available on our site. At no time is it appropriate for our Crossing Supervisor to look after your child whilst they are waiting to be picked up. The Crossing supervisor is not a DoE employee.

P&C Meetings term 1 Term 1 Week 3 Tuesday 11 February 9.15am in the Administration Block in the meeting room. Parents and carers are warmly invited to join us. It is wonderful to have you all back at school.
