House Athletics We announced in our General Assembly during the week, which was conducted remotely, the results from the House Athletics and the associated Age Group Champions. Congratulations to Greeves House and also to the following students: 13 Yr Female Matilda Richardson (7 events) 13 Yr Male Bruno Parfitt (9 events) 14 Yr Female Hazel Burgess (10 events) 14 Yr Male Imanuel Mach (7 events) 15 Yr Female Amelie Parfitt (10 events) 15 Yr Male Liam Morrissy (6 events) 16 Yr Female Neeve Bakker-Graham (8 events) 16 Yr Male Declan Prigg (9 events) 17 Yr Female Chloe Lewis (5 events) 17 Yr Male Kade McKenzie (7 events) 20 Yr Female Ebony Haberman (7 events) 20 Yr Male Caleb Morrissy (8 events) ANZAC Day - Driveway Commemorations All States and Territories' RSL branches have cancelled public Anzac Day services. Instead, they have joined other groups in asking Australians to unite in recognising all armed services personnel by standing on their driveways at 6:00am for a combined Dawn Service. "As a result of restrictions to this year's formal Anzac Day commemorations, the RSL encourages people to light up the dawn and remember and pay respects from home. This can take several forms including from the end of your driveway or within your home, with a candle or the light on your phone" an RSL spokesman said. The RSL has said that the qualities of the Anzac Spirit - courage, endurance, humour, ingenuity, and mateship - were particularly applicable for Australians amid the COVID19 pandemic. Armstrong Creek Work on the new school site continues with no disruptions at this point. Most of the buildings are now at lock up stage and the internal fitting out is underway. Turf has been rolled out on the oval and surrounding areas. We will continue with our relocation meetings this Term to plan our move for the start of the 2021 school, obviously with these to be conducted remotely. Cont…….. This being the first Newsletter of Term 2 I would like to welcome back to school all of the school community including any new students, albeit in this very different way to which none of us have ever experienced before. From the feedback that I have received from staff members, students and parents the remote learning, which is being provided by the school, is progressing well despite the obvious limitations that are associated with it. The ability to move across to the remote learning with so few major issues is a credit to our staff and their adaptability and also to the students and their willingness to make the best of a different learning platform. There is no doubt that all members of the school community wish that they could be back at school but we need to follow the advice of the Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton, who reiterated the following advice last week: My advice to the Victorian Government was and continues to be that to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID19), schools should undertake remote learning for Term Two. This is because having around a million children and their parents in closer contact with teachers and other support staff has the potential to increase cases of coronavirus not just in schools but across the community. By having remote learning, it can contribute to physical distancing and therefore supports efforts to drive transmission down.If students are having trouble with the remote learning, I encourage you to contact the school to help you to address these issues. Open Night/Enhancement Program Without the ability to run an Open Night and Enhancement Program Information Session, we have had to produce some presentations that have been placed on the school website for interested parents/students to access. As is outlined in the Open Night presentation, one thing that has changed for the 2021 school year will be the school enrolment zone. Welcome to Mr Brad Clough who joins us from MacKillop Education and is teaching English/Legal Studies/Humanities. Whole Staff PD Day Staff will be undertaking a Professional Learning Day on Monday 4th May. This student free day was always in the school calendar and has been planned for since the start of the year. General Assembly We have sent out to students a link to access a virtual General Assembly. The presentation associated with this Assembly included some recent photos of the new school, together with trend data results linked to the My School Website and also the results from the House Athletics which was held at the end of last term. If parents would like to see this presentation I encourage you to access this through your son/daughter’s link.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT CONTINUED

Barwon Health Immunisation have released the following information regarding their immunisation program for students in Year 7 & 10:

We are watching the situation, and will be guided by the Department of Education and Department of Health, in regards to the School immunisation program.

Whilst parents are welcome to take their child to their own GP if they want their child vaccinated now, we would prefer they not attend our clinics as yet as they are already extremely busy.

If a return to school looks unlikely then we will look at other options for vaccinating students who have missed their vaccines but for the time being we have just put the program on hold as, the school system is already under enormous pressure.

If school does return we imagine that it will be easier to reorganise visits as we imagine a lot of the extra events within the school calendar will not be going ahead.

If school does not return before the end of June it will mean that the current Oberon Year 7 students will require their 2nd dose of HPV in 2021 which we can easily organise.

The Year 10 program isn’t expected to start until mid July with the Oberon session scheduled for July 21st. There is still work to do in this space in regards to consent form returns, which will be easier to organise once the students have returned and we do not have the flu vaccine workload in our office. We are definitely aiming to deliver the Year 10 program in some form this year.

Please be assured that the safety of everyone is our top priority and that the students will not miss out on these vaccines , they will simply be delayed.

If parents have any questions regarding immunisations we ask that you visit [email protected] for further information as The Barwon Health Immunisation Service phones are very busy at the present time.

ANZAC DAY AT HOME DRIVEWAY COMMEMORATIONS

Because all ANZAC services have been cancelled this year, to keep everyone as safe as possible, the RSL is asking that we all join together to unite in recognising all armed service personnel by standing in our driveways at 6am for a combined Dawn Service.

You are encouraged to light-up-the-dawn, perhaps with a candle or the light on your phone, and in the quiet, remember.

Various dawn services will be available to listen to and watch on TV. See the ABC link for more information: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-11/anzac-day-around-australia-during-coronavirus-restrictions/12136690

You can choose to accept one, two or all three: Challenge One: Sustainable Art Make a piece of artwork using recycled materials only. Your artwork must be of an animal, plant or an ecosystem and made out of recycled materials that you can find at home e.g. plastic bottles and containers, plastic and metal lids, plastic and paper bags, glass jars, scrap paper, material etc. Submit a photo of your piece and a short explanation of its importance/significance. Challenge Two: 60 Second Film Write, direct and produce a one minute (maximum) film that explains why conserving biodiversity is important for the planet and humans. Your film can be any genre you want: documentary, fantasy, action, comedy, musical, dance, animation or horror. Challenge Three: Life Hack Design and make anything using recycled materials that Oberon Students and/or teachers can use as a life hack to BOTH help with living in iso and reduce their environmental impact on the planet. Submit a photo with an explanation about its benefits or a short video showing your life hack and explaining its benefits. Challenges can be completed individually or with a partner or in a small group (remembering to follow quarantine and social distancing rules – therefore you might have to collaborate all on online!).
