Students Return to School

It was great to see the majority of our students returning back to school yesterday. There are a number of precautionary measures in place to keep our students safe, however if your child is unwell please keep them at home. If your child is unwell at school, parents will be contacted to come and collect their child. The Department of Education has given all schools a first aid kit, which includes a contactless thermometer, which staff will use in their response to a child who presents with symptoms of illness including fever. Please remember, if your child is worried about the COVID situation or has concerns about getting back into school routine our Hub staff (Mrs Kerryn Cassidy, Mrs Melanie Beer, Mrs Simone Ingram and Mr Richard Gilbert) are there to support. Please make contact with these staff members if this is the case as they have many strategies to help both students and families. Extra Processes in Place

As students return to school, we will have:

Hand sanitiser in all classrooms for students to use;

Laptops and computers are being regularly cleaned after use by different students;

Students are encouraged not to drink from the bubblers but bring a drink bottle and refill from the chiller bubblers;

Having parents and caregivers drop off and pick up students from the gates, to stop having too many adults in the school;

Enhanced cleaning occurring from 12 - 2:30pm, with the playground equipment and student toilets being cleaned after recess and lunch each day; and

There will be no whole school assemblies, as we cannot have mass gatherings.

Our school canteen will return to full operation this week, with the normal menu.

Little Mermaid Show and Stage 3 Camp

Due to the COVID situation the Little Mermaid show scheduled for Term 1 was postponed. The company who performs this show has now informed us that the show has been cancelled due to the uncertainty around the restrictions. Rather than refunding the money to the students who paid, we have given them a credit on their account, which will be used for the next paid activity. This may include school sport, end of year trip or excursion and so on. Any unused money at the end of the year will be refunded. Similarly with our Stage 3 excursion to Ballarat. Due to the uncertainty of restrictions and cross State requirements, we have been forced to cancel the trip. Saying that, I know how much enjoyment our students get from such a trip and I am investigating a possible overnight excursion to another area within our State. I will know more as the term continues and further restrictions are reduced. I will keep in contact with the relevant parents as we progress. Removing Head Lice and Nits

Mention head lice and most of us instantly develop an itch. While head lice and nits, (the eggs of head lice) are certainly annoying and persistent, they're not dangerous. Here's everything you need to know to rid your kids of head lice and nits. Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/health/removing-head-lice-and-nits Have a great week. Hello everyone!!! My arrival at the Centre this morning was wonderful. It was great to see such welcoming smiling faces of our students back at school fulltime today!! My role at SaCC is a little different at the moment and I just wanted to keep our families up to date with the changes bought around by Covid-19 regarding the centre.

RECONCILIATION WEEK- This year we will be acknowledging reconciliation week by making a ‘sea of hands’!! Each

child in our school will be given a cardboard hand on a paddle pop stick which they will be decorating (either in class or at home). These hands will be proudly displayed out the front of our Front Office as a sea of hands. The theme for this year is #InThisTogether, which given the current circumstance with Covid-19 is resonating even stronger. I will be distributing hands to my combined playgroup families as well to add to the sea and also in the windows of the SaC Centre. BREAKFAST CLUB- Great news is that Breakfast club will return next week!! Our school has been successful in being selected into the Foodbank Breakfast for Health Program and that means great things for our school. Our breakfast club will continue to provide FREE breakfast to any student that comes to SaCC in the mornings between 8.35 - 9am. It will now offer- Toast with Jam, vegemite or Honey, Weet-Bix, Cornflakes and fruit with warm Milo or Milk to drink. To any new families to our school- Breakfast club is run every day, is free and is situated in the Infants area. It has a big sign near the door with colourful handprints on it saying the Schools as a Community Centre. FRUITBREAK REWARDS- Also starting back next week will be the fruit break rewards chart for Stage 1 children. This reward system works by acknowledging the fruit children are bringing everyday for fruit break/crunch and sip in the mornings. Each child gets a stamp on the chart for fruit eaten, which is tallied at the end of each week. Each student needs at least 3 stamps to enter the draw. I then draw the winner on the morning announcements. The winning student is awarded with a $20 voucher to Vinnies Fruitz shop. The fruit chart rewards have been successful for nearly 2 years now and has shown evidence that more of our Stage 1 children bring and eat their fruit when the program runs. I ask parents to ensure that at least one piece of fruit is packed each day that is easy to eat for your child. PLAYGROUP- There is still no on-site programmes at the centre at this time due to Department rules regarding non-essential adults coming into the school grounds and social gathering limits. Given the ease of restrictions from 1st June- I will be trialling an hour-long playgroup of singing and dancing and games in the oval of the Marie Bashir Park to accommodate up to 20 people (children included) and to ensure that we can social distance ourselves. I ask that parents have washed their hands and their children’s hands prior to arriving and to stay home if unwell. This will run on Monday morning Week 6 - from 10-11am weather permitting. I will also be trialling a pram walking group starting this Thursday 28th May for up to 10 people. Details will be on my Facebook page for interested parents. BRINGING UP GREAT KIDS PROGRAM– the advertised Centacare parenting program ‘Bringing up Great Kids’ unfortunately will be cancelled for this term as well. This program was advertised to run for 3 weeks starting 16th June. Due to Covid-19 restrictions this program will not run until 2021. Sorry for any inconvenience. There are some online parenting courses available at the moment- if you are interested in these options please contact me via 69592144 or on my Facebook page. These opportunities will change throughout the weeks as restrictions do but I will keep everyone posted through the newsletter and our Facebook page. I am at the Centre Mondays to Thursdays and will continue to do online stories and craft packs to interested families. Thanks again Everyone!!! Mel

The start of this year has been a bit mixed up due to COVID-19. We have been doing home leaning for 8 weeks. At the start of Term 2 we started to come back to school twice a week as the restrictions lifted. This week we are back to school full time, we are enjoying being back to normal and being able to see our friends. But we do still have to try to keep our distance and wash hands regularly. In HSIE, with Mrs Rowe and Mr Mellon, we have been learning about migration to Australia and who are the different people who have come to this country. It is great to have the full class in the classroom and being able to learn all at the same time. By Zarah and Zahli

This weeks scones were flavoured with roasted wattleseeds purchased from Kurrajong Australian

Native Foods. The Wattleseed Acacia victoriae or the Elegant Wattle is collected by Aboriginal People just as it has been for thousands of years. Today it is collected using sheets of cotton laid out under the trees, the pods are then dislodged using wadi sticks and the seed then separated and cleaned by hand using a

variety of techniques.

The Elegant Wattle is one of more than 1000 species of Wattle in Australia, many of which are edible but few of which

have the intensity of flavour and large easily processed seed of the Elegant Wattle.

As a food, Wattleseed has more protein, energy and trace elements than rice, pork & chicken. Research has been done to investigate the possibilities of Australian Wattleseed being used as a famine relief crop in African countries as it grows in

deserts which typically have very poor soil, little or no water and produces abundant high quality food each year.

Thank you for your kind donation
