Barraba Central School Term 4 – Week 8 25 November 2013
Principal’s Report
What a wild weekend of weather. I hope all managed to stay at least a little dry. The school has had
many rooms inundated, rooms damaged and a few large tree branches down. But we were luckier than
some. We hope all rooms and surroundings will be operational in coming days.
This week we have another action packed week with swimming school and our Primary Special Assembly on Thursday 27/11/13 at 2:15pm. The Secondary Special Assembly will be on Monday 02/11/13 at
12: 15pm. This will be followed by our main Presentation Day on Tuesday 10/12/13 at the Barraba RSL
hall at 12.00 midday. This is a new format and the first time that we will be holding a K-12 Presentation Day together. Thanks to the generous community organisations, businesses and individuals who have donated monies and awards
towards the event. It promises to be fantastic. I hope to see you there.
A friendly reminder to all primary parents that when you are picking your child up from school, please use the Infants
entrance near the notice board. This is to ensure that they are away from the buses picking up students.
Finally I had the pleasure of attending Martin Unwin’s
Retirement dinner at the Play House on Saturday night. On behalf of the students, staff and wider the community we
would like to say thank you for the 35 years’ service to the
community of Barraba and public education.

Years 5 boys are enjoying interacting with grandparents in a ‘blokey’ way at the Barraba Men’s Shed. Students have been learning the process of measuring along with the names of various tools. They are in the early stages of making a weaving loom for their classroom. Thank you to the members of the Barraba Men’s Shed for their continuing support.

Secondary students Brittany Hughson and Martin Vaughan share their skills with Year 5/6 students as a part of their SLR Sports Coaching course. Brittany coached netball and Martin Vaughan coached soccer. Primary students thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Thank you to Brittany, Martin and Mr Carter for providing this experience.
On Wednesday 20 November, students in Years 4/5I held a funraiser to raise funds for the Phillippine disaster. As a result of the close connection that Barraba has with the Phillipines through the Barraba Festival, it was nice to be able to assist in some small way. Students sold ‘Ice cream in a cone with sprinkle’ at recess and raised a total of $93.30 which is a fantastic effort.
After studying The Philippines in class, students created fantastic art works which were on display in the town’s shop front windows. The school students really enjoyed learning about another culture and were eager to participate in the town parade. Our Philippine Queens, Jade and Georgia, looked fabulous leading the parade under beautiful floral arches, followed by a sea of colour with all our primary students. It was lovely to see so many of our students participate in the recent Barraba festival. Early in the afternoon, students from both primary and secondary took part in the fashion parade which was organised by the local Philippine community. Dayna organised a wonderful film fest followed by the opportunity for our students to participate in a parade of fashion at The Play House. Thank you to Tammy Russell for assisting our models, Jess Austin, Nick Sweeney, Breanna Haines and Riley King. Enormous “Thanks” must go to Haidee Lee and Tanya Draycott for the sewing of costumes, which saw us looking sensational and extremely colourful in the parade. After the parade, the secondary students danced the Tinkling, a dance between bamboo poles on the ground. This fast hopping dance was performed by the very fit Georgia Geddes and Cody Hatch while Emily Kelso and Hayley Wilkinson kept the rhythm with the poles. It was enough to make your eyes boggle watching them carefully step in and out of the poles without being caught in the poles. The Primary students had been working hard to learn the BUMAYAH with Cora and pulled off the dance with ‘razzle dazzle’ and real feeling. The Infants students, who also learnt their dance with Cora, danced the very tricky BAKYA, a partner dance with more steps and turns than Dancing with the Stars! We wish to thank Cora for her persistence and choreography. What a clever lady! We hope to see just as many fantastic costumes and dancers at the next festival in 2016.

On Thursday 21st November, Mrs King took 2 teams of year 3 and 4 cricketers, to a day of cricket at Chaffey Park, Manilla. St Michaels, Manilla and the Central School were also in attendance, 8 teams in all. The day was organised by Cricket Development officers for the Central Northern Region. The day was designed so that each player would field; bat, bowl and wicket keep and have a whole lot of fun. Our teams practised hard and really showed their skills and sportsmanship on the day, each winning 3 out of their 4 games. The day would not have been possible without the assistance of Dale White, Jono Frost and Jodie Elkin who drove us there and cheered us on throughout the day. Everyone had a fabulous time while they danced to the music on the fields as they played in 34 degree heat. It was a scorcher but we kept well hydrated, running the water bottles and sunscreen dry. Huge thanks to Rhys Phillips and Thomas McGregor who assisted with umpiring on the day. We couldn’t have done without them. The following snippets sum up our star performances:
Riley King- Fast bowling attack, always in for the hat trick Luke White- Great all- rounder, batting, bowling and fielding
Finn Hart-sensational dancer and amazing fielder Ella Langford- Speed and determination fielding, born to play
cricket Hailie Spence –Rose- rookie of the year
Kane Ward- Entertainer of the team, great dancing and playing. I’m excited!
Jono O’Dell- excited by his own great efforts and ability bowling and fielding
Lane Simpson- Got 6 without hitting a six (wide 2+ hit 4!) Mackenzie Austin- big hitter, 5 sixes for the day
Bruce Simpson- first six of the day and then 3 more Jared Frost- speedy between the wickets, hitting a tonne of fours
Paige Elkin-McDonald- good bowling and heaps of fours Thomas Dennis- Stumping batsmen out as wicket keeper
Jack Ward- Great bowling and batting Nick Myers- Quick On the field, like a terrier chasing balls down
