Safeguarding ChildrenAs part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children.

9 October 2020 Primary Newsletter 3

As we head towards the last few weeks of this half term, it is a good time for us all to reflect on the systems and routines in place each day across the academy. Whilst it is great that many parents/carers have given positive feedback on the management of routines for dropping off and picking up their children and understand that the queuing system is in place to help keep everyone safe, it has been disappointing to hear that some parents/carers are not queuing up and are trying to ‘jump the queue’. Clearly this feels frustrating for the vast majority who have waited patiently and done the right thing. It is never a comfortable conversation for the Primary Leadership Team to have when someone has not waited their turn and hope that going forward we can ask everyone to abide by the rules to help keep the routines running smoothly and fairly for everyone.

Sadly Mr Haines and I have received a number of emails over the last few weeks from local residents on Highbury Gardens, the Fire Station and other local shop owners, informing us of parents/carers parking over driveways, driving and parking onto empty driveways, blocking access to the Fire Station etc. Clearly this is unacceptable and causing distress to local residents and could lead to preventing the fire service accessing an emergency. Closing the gate at the bottom of Cricklefield Close is for the safety of our school children, however it cannot be at the expense of causing issues elsewhere in the local community. Please be considerate when parking near the school.

Please be reminded that next week Friday 16th October the Primary school will be closed to children due to an Ark network training day. The Secondary school will be open as usual.

Covid 19 symptoms:

• a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)

• a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

• a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

If your child has any of the listed systems above, please let the office know.

If a member of your household tests positive it is very important that you inform the school and keep all children in family at home for 14 days. If you had Covid like symptoms and received a negative test result, you and your children are able to return to normal once you feel well again. You only need to have a test if you are experiencing Covid symptoms, please follow the government guidance if you are unsure.

Self-isolation means stay at home and do not leave the house for 14 days.

• do not go to work, school or public places – work from home if you can

• do not go on public transport or use taxis

• do not go out to get food and medicine – order it online or by phone, or ask someone to bring it to your home

• do not have visitors in your home, including friends and family – except for people providing essential care

• do not go out to exercise – exercise at home or in your garden, if you have one

This guidance for educational settings indicates who can get a test, local test sites, and how to book your test. It is vital that educational settings only recommend children to get a test if they develop coronavirus symptoms. These are:

• a high temperature • a new, continuous cough • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

Should children require a test there are two local testing sites, as well as those situated in our neighbouring boroughs.

• Mildmay Road Car Park, open 8am-8pm 7 days a week. • A Mobile Testing Unit routinely visits Gants Hill. The next dates are 15, 18, 21,

24, 26 and 30 September.

All test sites are government run and appointment only. They can be booked through the online national system.

Book your test here: https://www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test. If you are a member of staff you are an essential worker and can indicate that when booking. This will prioritise your appointment. onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com/coronavirus/test

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

Isaac Newton

BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.

There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be in-troduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certifi-cate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week.

Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

At School • At school we always remind the children to treat others in the way that they

would like to be treated in return. • At school we talk about having good listening skills and that we must look at the

person who is talking to us to show respect for them and that we are listening to them properly.

• During every lesson the children are encouraged to develop their sociability by talking to their talk partner, when some children find this hard to do; an adult will sit and help facilitate paired talk. During the course of the year the children will be moved around and will have been encouraged to have different reading partners, maths partners etc.

• We discuss the importance of working together as one big team or family at school and that we need to take care of everybody – we use the phrase ‘kind hands, kind feet’ to remind children that we do not hurt others.

• When a child hurts someone or makes a poor behaviour choice, it is important that they reflect on their behaviour and if another person is involved, that they apologise to them.

• Through wider reading and research the children are able to extend their understanding of the world around them, reflecting on what makes things different and what are the common thread through life.

• Though reading stories the children can develop their skills of empathy through their comprehension of the characters, their motivations etc.

At Home• Having consistent boundaries between home and school is very important. • Talk to your child about the importance of not hurting or hitting other children

and that we need to treat everyone kindly and respectfully. • We know that you have equally high expectations of your child at home as we at

school and working in partnership has great strength in supporting your child to make good choices each day.
