Dear Parents,

We have had an excellent start to the new school year and after spending two weeks in the school preparing and getting to know my new colleagues, Wednesday saw the arrival of our new children and their parents. The school came more to life on the Thursday with the return of the children from last year and the learning community was completed with the arrival of reception and pre-reception on Monday morning.

I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received since my arrival at ISH. There is a strong feeling of an empathetic, caring, learning community which I am excited to be a part of. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all families especially those that are new to ISH and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the near future with an ideal opportunity being provided on 6th September at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening.

We are trialling a different format this year in the hope that as many of you as possible are able to attend and meet your child’s teacher.

• 17:30-Theteacherswillbeintheirclassroomswheretheywillpresentyouwithimportantinformationforthe year ahead. • 18:15-IwillgiveashortwelcomepresentationintheTheatre.• 18:45-Theteacherswillrepeattheirpresentation,whichisanopportunityforyoutovisittheclassteacherof siblings (please ensure that you do not attend the same presentation twice). • 19:30-Theeveningfinishes

This evening is an opportunity for you to meet with your child’s class teacher and to learn about what the next academic year holds in store. The teachers are always available to meet you to discuss any matter relating to your child but time does not permit for individual discussions on this occasion. If you would like a one to one conversation with your child’s class teacher please arrange a separate meeting at another time. Your cooperation on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Dear ISH readers continued

For those of you who are new to The Netherlands there is an organisation called ‘The Hague International Centre’ which is a joint initiative between the Municipality, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) and ACCESS. This organisation has been created to help support expatriates with their relocation. On Monday, 17 September they have a ‘Welcome to The Hague’ programme which is an ideal opportunity to learn about the new city you live and work in and what it has to offer. For furtherdetailsvisittheirexcellentwebsitehttp://www.denhaag.nl

Finally, I would like to extend a warm welcome to David Butcher the new Secondary Principal. David has been introduced to all the Primary teachers and children and the two of us have met on several occasions over the last two weeks.

Have an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.

Kind Regards,

Kevin RaePrimary Principal

Mother Tongue NewsDear Parents,Welcome or welcome back to the International School of the Hague. It was lovely to see all our students back at school and to hear about the nice time they had during the holiday. Many of them told me about how they enjoyed visiting their home country as well as meeting and having fun with their grand- parents, cousins or friends. No doubt it has been boosting their mother tongue!Forournewparents, whatwemeanby“mothertongue”inourschoolistheparents’language, thelanguagefirstlearnedbyachild, one’snativelanguage;thelanguagelearnedbychildrenandpassedfromonegenerationtothenext, thefirstlanguagethatyoulearnwhenyouareababy, ratherthanalanguagelearnedatschoolorasanadult.AtISH,weusuallyexplainitinthefollowing:“Thisisthelanguageyouhavebeenusingwithyourchildsincetheywereborn, thelanguageyouhaveusedtospeaktothemwhentheywerebabies, tosendthemtosleep, totellthemtheirfirststories,to comfort them when they are afraid or hurt or the language that will come out naturally if you have to suddenly stop them if in danger or when you are not happy with them.”Your Mother Tongue might not be your strongest language. If raised in multilingual family you might have 2 or even more mother tongues. It is crucial for children to develop their own mother tongue. It is the language they use to communicate with their family and friends, it gives them access to their own culture and family background and it facilitates a possible rehabilitation to their home country, national school or university. We will make a list of all the MT classes available in The Hague and will communicate it through the newsletter so that everyone is aware of the language possibilities on offer outside the school.

Looking forward for a year full of languages development!

MR CandidatesWelcomebacktowhatwearesurewillbeanotherexcitingandfun-filledyearattheISH.AsanMR,weare looking forward to the challenges and successes that the coming year has in store for us.

The second consecutive term of our Secretary, Mr. Dirk Dobbelaere, has come to an end. On behalf of the MR, I would like to express our gratitude for all of the hard work and insight Dirk has contributed over the past six years.

This means that we will need to hold elections for a parent representative on the MR. All parents are eligible to participate in the MR, which is composed of three parent and three teacher representatives. Terms are three years in duration and a member may sit for a maximum of three consecutive terms. The MR is a legal body and has the right of approval and the right of advice regarding a number of issues and topics within our school. Our MR meets once per month and these meetings take place with our Principal, Deputy Principal and Director of Operations in order to ensure close cooperation.

Interested candidates are requested to submit a brief statement to Ms. Verona Schroder ([email protected]) about themselves and their background so that we can post it in the newsletter prior to theelections.ThedeadlineforsubmittingthisprofileisTuesday,September11th.Allparentsareeligibleto run and all parents are eligible to vote.

Parent InfoDear ISH parents

On behalf of the teachers of the Malcolm Davies music centre and myself, I would like to welcome both new and old students, to the new school year.I trust we all had a nice and restful time over the summer, and I am positive that we have a wonderful musicalyearaheadofus, filledwithactivitiesandmusicalexperiences.

Thisyearthecentrewillexpanditsactivitiesandwilloffermoreforouryoungmusicians:School’schoir, “glee club”, a possible parent and staff choir, our very own concert and symphonic band, musical matinee’s, and much much more.Iamconfidentthatallouryoungmusicianswillbenefitfromourrichmusicalenvironmentandfromourdevoted staff. I would like also to bring to your attention that while ISH will continue to carry most of the costs of the centre, we will, however, have to ask an annual 25€ administration fee from all students enrolling for lessons at the MDMC.

For more information, please visit our website (under music centre on the ISH website).

Wishing us all a great musical year,
