Program SponsorsSoundbreaking is an eight-episode PBS series

that explores the extraordinary impact of recorded music on the modern world. Soundbreaking was the last project produced by legendary music producer Sir George Martin, who passed away in March. The series combines unprecedented access to some of the most celebrated artists, producers and innovators from across the music spectrum, with rare archival studio footage and an extensive soundtrack. Soundbreaking will air on KSPS weekdays, Nov. 14 - 23 at 11 pm.

Charting a century’s worth of innovation and experimentation in the creation of music, Soundbreaking offers a behind-the-scenes look at the birth of new sounds. From the invention of the microphone to the Moog synthesizer, from the phonograph to digital streaming, Soundbreaking moves between past and present to tell the stories behind the sounds.

The series features more than 150 exclusive and original interviews with such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Roger Waters, Roger Daltrey, Linda Perry, Barry Gibb, Elton John, Debbie Harry, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, Mark Knopfler, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Lindsey Buckingham, Rosanne Cash, Don Was, Steven Van Zandt, Sheila E, Questlove, Ben Harper, Billy Idol, Beck, Imogen Heap, Darryl McDaniels, RZA, Bon Iver, Nile Rodgers, Nigel Godrich, Q-tip, Brian Eno, Mark Ronson, Rick Rubin, Tony Visconti and more.

“Music is the only common thread and universal language that binds us together regardless of race, nationality, age or income. And recorded music is how we experience it and what makes it accessible,” Sir George Martin said of the project prior to his passing.

KSPS PRODUCTIONSHealth Matters, TELEVISION FOR LIFE — now in its FOURTEENTH season — provides the

latest advice on medical issues from the Inland Northwest’s premier physicians and health care providers. Viewers are encouraged to email their questions any time to: [email protected]

Health Matters is made possible in part by ongoing support from:

Mental HealthThursday, Nov. 17 at 8 pm

(Rpt. Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 pm) Millions of North Americans live with various types of mental illness and mental health

problems, such as social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, drug addiction and personality disorders. In addition to the person directly experiencing a mental illness, family, friends and communities are also affected. Our panel discusses treatment options including medication and psychotherapy.

Pain ManagementThursday, Dec. 15 at 8 pm(Rpt. Sunday, Dec. 18 at 1 pm)

Day-to-day life can be a battle when you have chronic pain. Many who suffer have trouble finding adequate relief and dependence on opioids has become epidemic. Ongoing research is revealing the promise of novel treatments — including new medications, devices and injections, alternative therapies such as biofeedback and acupuncture and an all-encompassing mind/body approach.

Our Northwest Profiles production team continues to unearth the unique and sometimes off-the-beaten-track kinds of stories that make living in the Inland Northwest such an adventuresome and wonderful experience.

Wow, where has the time gone? This year, Northwest Profiles enters its THIRTIETH SEASON on KSPS! Our first two editions for the season include: Airbrush and tattoo artist Perry Mallet and glass jewelry designer Lucinda Dupee.

Editor’s Note:You have most certainly noticed the ‘new look’ in this

edition of Prevue. Some things have changed, some things (by popular demand) have remained the same and some things have taken on a “same…but different” look.

The DAYTIME SCHEDULE falls into that “same but different” category — Weekdays are still on Page 4 but are presented in a different way.

We have also taken the repetitive WEEKEND DAYTIME out of the Prime Time listings and have listed them more concisely on Page 5.

We made these changes to make Prevue easier to read and more convenient for you to track your favorite programs, as well as see at a glance what specials may interrupt them from time to time. We hope you enjoy the new format!

From the Board…Hello Friend,

The other day my brothers and I decided, for kicks and giggles, to visit a “psychic advisor.” We all had a good chuckle as we shared our tale of fortune with each other. My fortune in the coming year will involve a trip over water. This isn’t too far fetched as I travel across the Spokane River almost daily. With all due respect to my “psychic advisor,” I don’t need to visit her to know that everyone living in the viewing or streaming area of KSPS enjoys good fortune by having this station at our fingertips. KSPS is always just a point and click away for outstanding entertainment!

The other day at the KSPS annual meeting we had the great, good fortune to welcome 6 outstanding individuals to the board. I hope you will join me in welcoming: Vincent Alfonso, Dean, Gonzaga University School of Education; Klay Dyer, President Dyer Educational and Research Consultants; Tim McGillicuddy, Corporate Tax and Business Advisor at McGillicuddy Advisory Services; Monica Samper, Community Representative; Shannon Scheiwiller, VP of Marketing for Ecova; and Dave Tanner, CEO-Producer, North by Northwest Productions. Individually these new board members possess

a great wealth of knowledge and are dedicated to furthering the mission of KSPS. Please take a moment to go to the KSPS website and read about their accomplishments.

Wishing you good fortune this fall!

Joshua Bell’s Seasons of Cuba

Friday, Dec. 16 at 10 pm

Earlier this year, the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities asked Bell to be a member of the first official government-to-government bilateral initiative in the wake of President Obama’s trip to Cuba. This concert represents Bell’s first phase of that mission — building a bridge between Cubans eager to engage with American artists in a new landscape of cultural diplomacy.

…And More Thanks! In the yearly life-cycle of a viewer-supported Public Television station, the final membership campaign of a fiscal year always has

the potential for posing uncertainty and more than a mild amount of stress. However, at KSPS, everyone involved in the campaign — talent, studio crew, staff and stellar volunteers — take much of the unceratinty out of the equation and keep everything running smoothly and comparatively worry-free. A Season for Thanks —Thanks to everyone who gave to KSPS

during the Fund Your Faves campaign over the summer. With your support, we met the fiscal year-end membership goal! It came down to the wire on Wednesday, August 31st, when we produced live pledge breaks around our programming that night. Community volunteer Tamara Schupman and President & General Manager

How I Spent My Summer Vacation…As you may be able to tell from the picture, I did a little

traveling since our last Prevue. My wife and I took a long-awaited and much-delayed anniversary vacation. The highlight was our visit to Highclere Castle — Downton Abbey’s home for 6 seasons. While there were no Granthams about, and Mrs. Patmore declined to fix our supper, it was great to see the place where all of those memories were made.

But as we all took our long lingering goodbye stroll away from Highclere Castle…another castle was coming into view — this one occupied by the new Queen of Masterpiece: Victoria! Ably filling the void left by the departure of our Downton family, Victoria debuts in January, bringing with it history, intrigue, romance, treachery…and enough interpersonal drama to keep you entertained for some time to come. The premiere episode will have you hooked and wondering what comes next.

Speaking of next — most of you reading Prevue do so to find out what’s next on KSPS. New seasons of Sherlock, Mercy Street and Call the Midwife are also on the way. And despite our best efforts to keep you up-to-date, our printing schedule makes that difficult. So to help you stay current, there are several ways to find out the latest programming information, from ksps.org/schedule to the monthly electronic newsletter which many of you already receive.

But here’s your best way to find the changes and adjust your viewing accordingly: our weekly newsletter, The Week Ahead. It will arrive in your email every Thursday and comes with its own printable schedule and program highlights.

So if we don’t have an email address for you…send one to [email protected] and we’ll get you on the list.

Finally, there have been a few changes behind the scenes on the Friends of KSPS Board, with Board Vice President Clint Marvel, Edmonton Representative Mary-Phillips-Rickey, Calgary Representative Bob Morrison and Gonzaga University Director of Community and Public Relations Mary Joan Hahn all retiring from the Board after nearly 25 combined years of service.

We thank them for their work for us and for all of you…and we hope they’ll remain Friends forever.

Sincerely,

NOT Photoshopped! That’s right — KSPS President and General Manager Gary Stokes was actually in Merry Ol’ England this summer, taking in sights like Highclere Castle.

KSPS Partners with Hifumi En SocietyThe Hifumi En Society has a mission to preserve the history and culture of Spokane’s

Japanese-American community. We began talking together in the spring and are now partnering on a long-term project that will benefit everyone. With the financial support of Hifumi En, our production crews spent time this summer interviewing elders in the community on video. They are now in the process of creating video clips of key memories to share on a web site that will be available to students, researchers, families and the general public. This is one way that KSPS achieves its mission to “enrich all the communities we serve.” Watch for the web site to go live this spring.

14 - 23 at 10 pm.

King, Annie Lennox, Dave Stewart, Mark Knopfl er, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Lindsey Buckingham, Rosanne Cash, Don Was, Steven Van Zandt, Sheila E, Questlove, Ben Harper, Billy Idol, Beck, Imogen Heap, Darryl McDaniels, RZA, Bon Iver, Nile Rodgers, Nigel Godrich, Q-tip, Brian Eno, Mark Ronson, Rick Rubin, Tony Visconti and more.

“Music is the only common thread and universal language that binds us together regardless of race, nationality, age or income. And recorded music is how we experience it and what makes it accessible,” Sir George Martin said of the project prior to his passing.
