During the late war, after our country had joined in it, the custom of rising whenever the national song was played became the custom—and a good one for war time. Is it a custom really essential to the patriotic instinct in times of peace? Does it prove anything? The following from O. C. Maclntyre's New York letters seems to possess more than a grain of sense—and a warning: A discussion of interest is taking place in Man- hattan as to whether or not theater audiences should arise at the rather far-fetched use of the national anthem. One incident where "The Star-Spangled Banner" is played took place in history seven years before the anthem was written. Audiences, it ap- pears, are objecting to the tawdry appeal to this sort of sentimentality. Most of them believe that only where the anthem is played by a military band in proper settings should the audience arise. At a Broadway playhouse recently the situation was err.r phasized when a young man down front failed to stand as the tune was played. Several around him said harsh things and one prominent button manu- facturer applied an opprobrious epithet. It devel- oped after the curtain had gone down that the young man had to be carried to a waiting automobile. Shrapnel had injured his spine and paralyzed his limbs during the recent war.
