EDITORIAL CHRISTOPHE NAVARREVinexpo Bordeaux continues to reposition itself

Over the past few years, Vinexpo has introduced fundamental changes in line with the group’s new international strategy. We are today confirming our objective of repositioning the show with a more quality-focused, niche format.

Vinexpo Bordeaux has always attracted major buyers from all over the world, and this trade-only show strives to provide them with an ideal vehicle to arrange meetings with exhibiting producers and merchants.

With this in mind and in this highly competitive market, Vinexpo has chosen to make its flagship show in Bordeaux a more manageable size, while maintaining its international scope.

A ‘made-to-measure’ four-day show that takes into account the constraints and expectations of each of its audiences:

• A focused exhibition space in Hall 1 and the brand new Hall 2 at Bordeaux Exhibition Centre facilitates visitor movement between stands.

• Time savings for visitors, who will spend less time pacing the aisles and instead benefit from more time in higher-quality appointments, developing longer-term business contacts. Return on investment for all.

• Dates brought forward to better align with buyers’ calendars, and to avoid exhibitors and visitors having to endure scorching weather as in some previous editions.

• Easier access and mobility with the provision of a ‘Vinexpo Pass’ to participants enabling them to travel free of charge on Bordeaux’s TBM (light rail and bus) transport network and receive several benefits to make the most of their stay in Bordeaux (e.g. free admission to Cité du Vin and selected museums).

• The international Vinexpo Symposium: a new, forward-looking event enabling professionals to plan for the impact of climate change on the wine and spirits sector.

• And to navigate these changes, support our revival and take our success story to a new level, Vinexpo has a new pilot.

• With the High Patronage of French President Emmanuel Macron, Vinexpo Bordeaux 2019 will consolidate its reputation as a high-quality event with a strong presence from key decision-makers and actors.

VINEXPO GROUP’S INTERNATIONAL STRATEGY

To enhance its flexibility and expertise, the Vinexpo group has taken 3 decisions:

• To structure each show by subsidiary, allowing them to explore alliance strategies and become independent profit centres;

• To draw on strategic advice from international decision-makers in the wine and spirits sector;

• To welcome a new director, international exhibitions expert Rodolphe Lameyse, to orchestrate these developments.

On the global chessboard of international exhibitions, Vinexpo group’s game plan is now clear, with its foundation on long-term strategy (market-specific, expert events in Hong Kong, New York and Shanghai) and supplemented by the shorter-term tactic of restoring France’s leading position through two events: our historic Bordeaux show to be followed shortly by another in Paris.

Today, buyers and businesses alike must meet the specific needs of their target markets.

Creating more agile trade shows with the human touch to foster networking, in brief, more accessible ‘smart shows’. That’s the objective of the Vinexpo group, which plans to roll out a triple offer each year:

- Odd years: New York, Bordeaux and Shanghai

- Even years: Paris, New York and Hong Kong

15% new exhibitors

1,600 exhibiting companies have registered for Vinexpo Bordeaux 2019, 15% of which did not exhibit in 2017. All exhibitors will be located within Hall 1, the brand new Hall 2 being reserved for the Symposium and major tastings.

Every French wine-growing region will be represented, including French brands with an international presence, such as: Grands Chais de France, Minuty, GH Martel & Cie, Henri Bourgeois, Albert Bichot, Champagne Bollinger, Joanne, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Bernard Magrez and CVBG-Dourthe Kressmann.

This year, Vinexpo remains resolutely international, with 29 different nationalities including two new countries: Turkey and Vietnam.

There will also be big names in wines and spirits from South Africa (Robinson & Sinclair and its portfolio of 15 wine growers), Spain (Marqués de Cáceres, Solis Avanti), Georgia, Portugal, Argentina (Clos de los Siete, Catena Zapata), Germany, Italy (Piccini, Emilia Romagna), the United States, Lebanon and China (Cofco Greatwall).

Vinexpo Bordeaux offers an opportunity to taste a huge variety of wines from very different geographical origins and styles; a show where you can compare South African with New Zealand Chardonnays. Also on offer are wines made using traditional methods, primarily from small family businesses, but on occasion from larger groups with greater financial and technical strength.

The coexistence of these different profiles is a key asset for Vinexpo Bordeaux, and to make the show more accessible to smaller exhibitors, they will be accommodated in a specially-designed pavilion.

In parallel, AANA (Nouvelle-Aquitaine Food Agency) is offering 6 x 18 m2

stands for SME and micro wineries from the region.

This diversity is reflected in the profile of the companies present: stands for family-run estates alongside major international groups, wine merchants and wine associations. Many exhibitors capitalise on the presence of top buyers at Vinexpo to launch their new products or organise exceptional and unforgettable tastings.

10% spirits

Spirits comprise 10% of the offer, a relatively stable percentage at Vinexpo Bordeaux. The show attracts regular exhibitors, producers of cognac and Armagnac such as Camus, Frapin and Delamain. The diversity of the products on offer also stands out, however, ranging from liqueurs to gins (Christian Drouin), vodka, whisky (the Walsh Whiskey distillery) and Baiju, with the unveiling of Yanghe this year.

On Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 May, Vinexpo Bordeaux 2019 will play host to the 4th Sud-Ouest Food Meetings, the business convention for agri-food companies from Nouvelle-Aquitaine, organised by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Food Agency (AANA).

Usually dedicated to fine dining products, for the first time this targeted-appointments event is joining forces with a major wine and spirits event.

Sud-Ouest Food Meetings put selected buyers from Europe and major export zones in direct contact with agri-food companies from all over the region. This year, 27 international buyers from 20 different nationalities will come to meet 47 companies from Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

This joint initiative, made possible by the show’s revised dates, is an opportunity to welcome buyers who combine their commercial interest in gourmet products and fine wines.

Vinexpo Bordeaux will welcome buyers from 120 nations, 65% of them decision-makers, confirming the show’s international prestige.

Through Vinexpo’s experience, exclusive links have been forged with key buyers from the wine and spirits industry worldwide, in areas ranging from import/export, superstores, wholesale, e-commerce, restaurants, hospitality and retail through to specialist associations and institutions.

European buyers including Tesco, the Wine Society, Casino, Le Petit-Ballon and Delhaize will join Asian buyers such as Jointek Fine Wines (Hong Kong), Paradox (China) and Nippon Liquor (Japan), as well as major US companies such as Total Wines.

These buyers know they will find an event tailored to their needs, bringing together a huge array of wines and spirits. Having so many major decision-makers among visitors and exhibitors can spark genuine business opportunities.

Ever mindful of this goal, Vinexpo has revamped the One to Wine Meetings first launched in 2017. This networking platform enables exhibitors and visitors to plan and organise their appointments before the show. The concept is simple: the visitor indicates before the show their areas of interest (wine styles, price range etc.) and their availability, and the show teams send them appointment suggestions. When the visitor confirms their appointments, they receive their personalised schedule.

Vinexpo Bordeaux is also a major meeting place for the French and international press. With some 800 journalists expected from 40 different countries, there is certain to be wide sharing of information and cross-fertilisation of ideas. The journalists will keep their readers updated on market trends and pass on the latest nuggets from the show.

Vinexpo Bordeaux is known for bringing people together, and this year is no exception, with several associations using the event to hold their own meetings.

• The Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI), chaired by Andrès Rosberg, brings together at Vinexpo Bordeaux the profession’s big-hitters, such as Paolo Basso, Philippe Faure-Brac and Serge Dubs, voted Best Sommelier of the World in 2013, 1992 and 1989 respectively.

The future of the sommelier profession hinges on talented young people! This year Marc Almert, 25, crowned Best Sommelier of the World in 2019, will host the Vinexpo Challenge (Thursday 16 May, at 11am).

Three brilliant young sommeliers will compete in a friendly setting to persuade the audience of the merits of their personal selection of red and white wines in their preferred grape variety (Wednesday 15 May, at 4pm).

This fun and relaxed tasting will pit Nina Jensen (second Best Sommelier of the World 2019) head-to-head against Piotr Pietras (second Best sommelier of Europe and of Africa 2017), and Martyras Pravilonis (Best Sommelier of Lithuania in 2016, 2017 and 2018).

On 8 October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C (and above).

With increasingly far-reaching and clear-cut findings, and considerable progress in scientific understanding and modelling of the climate system, the evidence of climate change and its origins in human activity is now irrefutable. A number of consequences are already evident, while others are expected to emerge in the coming years and decades. The majority of socio-economic sectors will be affected.

Agriculture and viticulture are of course no exception. Vines are one of the crops most sensitive to significant temperature variations. More than heat, lack of water poses the primary threat.

Sustainable development goals can only be met if climate change is brought under control. The stakes are high for wine-growing regions worldwide, which face major challenges.

Michel Jarraud (WMO), Jean-Robert Pitte (Geographer), Philippe Mauguin (President of INRA), Patrice Geoffron (Economist) and Brice Lalonde (former minister for the environment) will be among those attending.

Our changing climate, and particularly the rise in temperatures seen in recent decades, has led to noticeable changes in the physiology of vines and the quality of wines.

Research centres around the world are coming together to find solutions to manage and reduce the impacts of climate change on the wine and spirits sector.

Several key research programmes and experiments have already enabled action to be taken. Operators are adopting practices that respect traditions in order to maintain a high level of quality, while complying with safety and regulatory constraints.

These new practices include strategies for adapting vines and production methods, ‘relocations’ of production, finding new and more suitable land, searching for new grape varieties, and even reintroducing old varieties.

Biological responses are being tested through cooperation schemes between research entities.

Interdisciplinary programmes are being developed that combine, among others, genetics, agronomy, oenology, economics and sociology. By combining these disciplines, the aim is to gain a better understanding of biological, technical and socio-economic processes, to maintain and improve the quality of the wine, and to adapt it to a new environment.

Again, producers and winegrowers benefit from advances in research and are not afraid to experiment with protocols. This talk, chaired by Jim Bittermann, CNN correspondent in Paris (Speakers: Michel Jarraud / Jean-Robert Pitte), will be followed by a discussion with Jeannie Cho Lee and concluded with a panel discussion: “How to produce and adapt in unstable environmental conditions”(Speakers: Gregory V. Jones / Laurent Panigai / Jonathan Ducourt, Catherine Le Page / Judith Adrien).

The impact of climate change on management of vineyards and wine production(in partnership with Wine Spectator)

12pm – 1.30pm – Room 8 – Hall 2

Our changing climate, and particularly the rise in temperatures seen in recent decades, has led to noticeable changes in the physiology of vines and the production of wines. Research centres around the world are coming together to find solutions to manage and reduce the impacts of climate change on the wine and spirits sector.

Interdisciplinary programmes are being developed that combine, among others, genetics, agronomy, oenology, economics and sociology.

By combining these disciplines, the aim is to gain a better understanding of the biological, technical and socio-economic processes, to maintain and improve the quality of the wine, and to adapt it to a new environment.

This talk will be chaired by Jim Bittermann, CNN correspondent in Paris (Speakers: Philippe Mauguin / Brice Lalonde) and followed by a debate chaired by Dana Nigro from Wine Spectator on “How research and technology can support producers in their evolution and adaptation strategy” (Speakers: Katie Jackson / Dr Dan Johnson / Miguel Torres Maczassek / Pau Roca).

Global warming poses major economic challenges for wine and spirits consumption. From an economic perspective, it threatens to jeopardise regional and global supply and demand balances.

Spain, the second largest wine exporter after Italy, is also the third largest wine producer in Europe after France and Italy. The predicted increase in temperature and decrease in rainfall will have considerable long-term economic and cultural consequences.

Australian wine producers are already looking to Tasmania for potential new production regions.

The strength of South African wine estates lies in the local climate and geography. Climate change, unfortunately, appears to be emerging as an inevitable future threat to South African wine production.

In Sweden, meanwhile, the average temperature has increased by one degree since 1990. It is expected to increase by an additional two to six degrees by the end of this century. Wine-growing seems to have a future there.

Major champagne producers are also looking to southern England. Vineyard surface area in the United Kingdom has doubled since 2007, and is expected to double again by 2020, according to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association.

Global warming is not only affecting wine and wine-growing regions, but could also make wine production very complex and expensive.

Will climate change rewrite the global wine production map?

This talk will be chaired by Jim Bittermann, CNN correspondent in Paris (Speaker: Patrice Geoffron), followed by two panel discussions. The first entitled: “How can wine producers integrate climate change into their business strategy?” (Speakers: Christian de Boissieu / Antonio Amorim / Eduardo Chadwick). An interview with José Luis Benitez, President of the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), will conclude this first discussion.

The second entitled: “Climate change’s winners, and tomorrow’s new ‘Eldorados’” (Speakers: Pedro Ferrer / Bruno Kessler / Éric Giraud-Héraud).

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Council is co-founder of this first international Symposium, and the CIVB is a major partner, demonstrating a mutual commitment to supporting the sector, and a willingness to work closely to provide high-level solutions and expertise to a pioneering industry in the fight against climate change.

VINEXPO / IWSR SURVEY

Global consumption of still and sparkling wine is forecast to reach US$ 207 billion by 2022 for total volume of 2.7 billion 9L cases, reveals the latest Vinexpo/IWSR wine and spirits report.

The total still and sparkling wine market will grow in volume by 2.15% between 2017 and 2022.

Driven by the trend to ‘drink less but better’, value outstripped volume growth across all regions. This is particularly evident in the Americas and Asia-Pacific. While volume and value advances in Europe were more moderate, the region continues to dominate global consumption and value shares at 58% and 50% respectively.

The USA continues to inch forward as the world’s most valuable wine market, worth US$ 34.8 billion in 2017. France is the second most valuable market at US$ 16.7 bn, followed closely by China at third place at US$ 16.5 bn.

The Vinexpo/IWSR research predicts that China will overtake France by 2020 as the second most valuable market in the world. By 2022, the Vinexpo/IWSR study predicts that the value of the Chinese market is forecast to hit more than US$ 19.5 billion.

Ranking of the top five volume markets remains unchanged in 2017. The USA was in the lead at 318 million cases followed by Italy (266 million) France (250 million), Germany (224 million) and China (156 million).

The world’s leading import markets are Germany, number one at 126.3 million cases followed by the UK at 114 million cases. By contrast, the USA (79.9 million) and China (61 million) ranked third and fourth continue to trend positively.

In the run up to 2022, premium wines (priced at US$ 10 - US$ 20) will be the biggest driver of value growth for still and sparkling wines (+15% between 2017 to 2022). The USA and China will be major contributors to this trend.

While red wine dominates global consumption with a 55% share, it is forecast to fall below 54% by 2022. Over the same period consumption of white wine, and particular rosé, are set to rise.Sparkling wine is putting fizz into the global market, especially in Europe which accounts for 65% of volume and 55% of value. World volume of 260.2 million cases was worth US$ 28.9 billion. By 2022 volume is expected to rise to 281 million cases, worth US$ 32.9 billion.

The US will drive import sparkling wine growth over the next few years, by adding 4.6 million 9L cases. Growth in the UK will slow. The Vinexpo /IWSR report that UK will add another 1.8 million cases between 2017 and 2022. Both US and UK sparkling wine imports will be driven by prosecco, a major driver of sparkling wine consumption.

In value terms, the top five markets are: the USA (US$ 4.5 billion) France ($3.6 billion), the UK and Germany (US$ 2.7 billion each) and Italy (US$ 2.5 billion).

While locally made spirits account for nearly 90% of consumption worldwide, international spirits are eroding this share, especially in China (baiju) and Asia-Pacific (cane, brandy and rum). Between 2017 and 2022, consumption of imported spirits will grow by 12%, to reach 399 million 9L cases.

Global spirits will inch forward in the run up to 2022. Declines in vodka will be offset by big advances by whisky (65.9 million cases) gin (9.5 million) and flavoured spirits (2.4 million).

Such is the strength of the trend to premium brands – especially in the USA and China – that all premium-plus categories (except vodka) are forecast to grow over the next five years.
