TOM THORPE HEADLINES
REMEMBRANCE ARTICLE Chairman of the Wattle Park Heritage Group, Box Hill Rotarian PP Tom Thorpe, was interviewed by Sally Heppleston from Leader Newspaper last week about the historic Lone Pine tree in Wattle Park, Burwood. Tom explained how a pine cone was brought back to Australia after WWI in 1915 from the historic tree on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Five seedlings grew from seeds planted in 1927 and one seedling was planted in Wattle Park in 1933 by the 24th Infantry Battalion who had their home there. Tom says the tree has suffered with time but a new seedling from the tree was planted at an ANZAC Day ceremony in 2011 to continue the ANZAC history.

Club Presenta on
Team MED Uganda Speakers: Chloe Higgens & Frazer Tankel
Team MED is a team of Monash University medical students formed in 2009 with the desire to learn, experience and contribute to the field of global health ànd currently participating in trips to Nepal, Tonga and Uganda.
Chloe Higgins is a third year medical student at Monash University, currently undertaking a placement at Box Hill hospital and has volunteered as the TeamMED operations manager.
Fraser Tankel is a second year medical student also at Monash University, who is an NYSF alumni, and has been involved in several volunteering organisations, as well as a volunteering trip to Cambodia in year 12.
Uganda Trip. Chloe and Frazer told us about their recent trip in January this year to Lubanda, a village in Uganda, where along with five other year 2 to 4 medical students and a local medical officer they were involved in medical testing at the Suubi Health Centre and dental health promotion (a significant problem in the country).
Medical testing included HIV/AIDS, TB, Diabetes, Malaria, Typhoid, Peptic Ulcer and many more both at the centre and outlying villages.
Rotary Chairman for the evening PP Ray
Riehm thanked Frazer & Chloe for their talk
and presented them with a wooden carved
“Flying Angel” which acknowledges our
contribution to the Angel Flight Service who
voluntary fly country people needing
medical attention free to a hospital or clinic.
Very soon Art Show Committee members will
start canvassing previous sponsors and
supporters, but we need more new sponsors! We ask all Members to be on the look out for
potential sponsors and advise Rae Harding so
we can add them to our sponsor list to visit.

Croquet Anyone? Last Sunday 12 Rotarians got together for a BBQ
lunch followed by a wonderful afternoon of very
competitive Croquet under the watchful eye of
Croquet legends Clem & Judy Joyce.
We assembled at Clem’s Croquet Club in Kew
and first enjoyed a sit-down sumptuous BBQ
lunch of chicken and pork sausages with five
salads and several bottles of wine. (Sweets came
later). We then formed three teams, armed
ourselves with multi-coloured balls and mallets
and in between showers we launched into a
highly competitive tournament of Croquet,
(subject to careful supervision by Clem & Judy).
Croquet is more than just a backyard sport. It’s even more than a group of white-clad men and women enjoying a Sunday afternoon on the croquet field, Croquet is as competitive and intense as any other sport (early this century it was actually played in the Olympics!) We had heaps of fun and a big thanks to Clem & Judy.
