As you stare down a street you’ve traveled countless times, and are told the name of street, but you can’t verify it because the street signs, landmarks, and guideposts are all gone, demolished, and decimated, you struggle to believe this is where you are. When you look into the eyes of those you love and hear the words you cannot comprehend hearing, “They didn’t make it” you may very well ask yourself, “Where am I? This can’t be happening.” But the pain is too real to deny, the loss too deep to dismiss, and the struggle too heavy to ignore. But when you look across the sea of debris and see the hands of friends, family, and even those who have no connection to your life other than the love of the Lord, while you are challenged to believe “where you are” you have every assurance of “Whose you are” - you are a child of God. When you look down the street that once was familiar and now holds no familiarity, but see neighbors helping neighbors, eat food you did not prepare, drink water you did not buy, and watch as others stand by you while you pick up the pieces, you may struggle believing where you are, but you know assuredly, “Whose you are” - you are a child of God. When the loss is beyond the replacing of a car or rebuilding a home, but is found in the realization this loss is in the absence of a presence, your heart begins to question, “where am I?” but you know exactly “Whose” you are. Sifting through the ways of the world to find an identity that fits is as impossible of a task as it may seem to sift through the rubble of a subdivision and find which piece of drywall went with which house. That’s why the real identity of who we are cannot be found in the world but can be found in Christ. “Your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col 3:3). Wherever the church is, when she’s created in the image of God and after the express image of the Son (Col 1:18), the church is great! She is perhaps at her best when she is met with crisis, for in the midst of the crisis, that is when the courage of Christ, the thinking of Christ, and the love of Christ can be seen and shown (II Timothy 1:7). Let these moments, the moments which surround us and challenge us in our world remain a constant reminder that in all things of the flesh, Christ will conquer all!
