Townsville’s 2nd

Adani India Fest was held on the 24th

of October 2015

with an aim to promote cultural integration by showcasing Indian

cultural diversity to the local community of Townsville.

Once again the majestic Riverway grounds at Kirwan were transformed

into all that is Indian from 10.00 am to 9.00pm. The program kicked off

with a Traditional welcome smoking ceremony by the Land owners and

custodian of Bindal and Wulgurukaba.

Traditional Indian welcome with crowning (Tilak) was bestowed upon

the guests who walked through the Entrance gate.

Within hours the ground was packed with people eager to have a

kaleidoscopic glimpse into all that India has to offer.

The 2nd Adani India Fest Townsville 2015 had a lot to offer with the diverse committee of

India Fest Townsville Inc comprising members from more than 15 states in India putting

together a great programme showcasing the diversity of India.

The morning sessions were primarily workshops like Yoga, Indian dances & music. These

served as an apt prelude to the subsequent performances that followed on stage. The

2nd Adani India Fest Townsville celebrated traditional dances with India’s most authentic

art forms, like Bharata Natyam, Kathak and fusion of classical and contemperory dances.

One of the highlights of the event was the Cookery Workshop by Masterchef Australia

2013 season 5 semi finalist Mr Rishi Desai.

Other highlights of the event were the Yoga workshop by Ms Kalaimathi, Bridal Photo

Booth (which had couple dressed as Indian Brides and Bridegrooms), Henna Art

Workshop and other traditional Indian stalls like Kerala Stall and Rajasthan hall.

The official inaugural ceremony took place at 6.00 pm which was attended on stage by

Mr Abhishek Singh (IFT President & Convener), CFO of Adani Mining Australia Pty Ltd

Mr Rajesh Gupta, Mayor Con Ms Jenny Hill, Federal Member for Herbert Mr Ewan Jones

(MP), Townsville MP Mr Scott Stuart, Mundingburra MP & also representative for

Cultural ministry of Qld Ms Coralee O’Rourke and Thuringowa MP Mr Aaron. Australian

and Indian national anthems were followed by video message from External Affairs

Federal Minister Ms Julie Bishop. In keeping with Indian tradition a lamp was lit

following speeches by all the dignatories.

The evening session from 6:00PM-9:30Pm was pretty much a cultural dance and music

extravaganza by the Jhoom Bollywood group from Melbourne, Natya Bollywood and the

different Indian Communities living in Townsville. Folk Dances like Bhangra, Garba,

Fisherman dance, Tandev and Kerala Thanima also constituted the various performances.

Kids as young as 5 years old also contributed to the stage performances in like the

Rainbow Dance, Silver steppers, Saffron girls and Groovy Boys.

Perhaps one of the highlights of the evening was the spectacular Silk Air sponsored

Fashion Show. The show highlighted the beautiful Indian Costumes both traditional and

modern depicting the latest in Indian fashion.

The Indian Food Stalls were a big hit as expected with long ques and the community got

a taste of the diverse Indian Cuisine and for the very first time locals got the opportunity to

relax in the India Fest BAR where the local Indian brew Kingfisher was an instant hit.

The lucky draw and raffle saw people winning free return tickets to India from Australia,

an ipad, Magnetic Island ferry ride and movie tickets.

The event culminated with a spectacular fireworks show to highlight the Indian festival of

lights – DIWALI followed by an electrifying bollywood dance routine by Jhoom group

from Melbourne in which the whole ground was turned into a dance floor with each and

everyone present putting on their dance shoes.

More than 20000 people attended the 2nd

Adani India Fest on 24th Oct 2015 making it the

largest attendance in a single day in any community event organized in Townsville to date.

This was only possible with the support of all our sponsorers like yourselves, our

volunteers, performers and the community of Townsville who turned up in unprecedented

numbers to support the event. We shall definitely be back bigger and better next year.
