Tenerife, Canary Islands, March 27, 1977, 583 people were killed

KLM Boeing 747 collided with a Pan Am Boeing 747 after the KLM started his take-off roll without proper ATC clearance.




Runway incursion - any occurrence in the airport runway environment involving an aircraft, vehicle, person or object on the ground that creates a collision hazard or results in loss of separation with a landing or departing aircraft.

Surface incident - unauthorized movement within the movement area, or an occurrence in a movement area affecting safety of flight.



ICAO Definition (new)“ Any occurrence at an aerodrome

involving the incorrect presence of an aircraft, vehicle, or person

on the protected area of a surface”
