Chinese New Year As part of our SMSC (spiritual, moral, social &cultural) development, this week all pupils; from Kinder-garten all the way up to Year 6 took part in celebrating Chinese New Year. This was an excellent opportunity to broaden our cultural understanding and continue to develop our respect for those who are different to us within our society. We had two special days planned where the children took part in workshops provided by an outside company. In addition to this, the teaching staff also planned plenty of other opportunities for the children to de-velop their cultural understanding of China. Many activities were taking place around the school, from reading and writing traditional Chinese tales, learning Chinese numerals for maths, listening to and playing Chinese music, recreating beautiful Chinese art work in different mediums and learning about China today. The children from Kindergarten to Year 6, all created a beautiful piece of Chinese Silk printing in a workshop provided by ‘Primary Workshops’. They used wax crayons to sketch out their designs on silk, which, with assistance, they melted through the fabric. They then used inks to create some beautiful colour bursts and patterns. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed this very peaceful art activity. Pre Prep had the opportunity to learn traditional Chinese dancing in different ways on Wednesday. Year 2 learnt a wonderful dance with fans, Year 1 and Reception learnt a very tricky handkerchief dance and Kindergarten took to the Sports Hall for the very first time to learn a silk scarf dance. The children performed these wonderful dances to staff, children and parents at the end of the day and everyone was so impressed with the skills they had learnt in such a short space of time. It was heart-warming to hear from the staff who lead the workshops, how impressed they were with all the pupils they came into contact with during their time in school. “Full of inspiring, imaginative ideas”, “beautifully behaved”, “keen and eager to participate” and “polite and helpful”, were just some of the comments I received. This makes me extremely proud to be part of BCS and it’s fantas-tic team of staff and pupils. On Wednesday the kitchen assisted us in expanding our knowledge of Chinese culture by providing a delicious Chinese lunch. The hall was beautifully decorated (as were the kitchen staff!) and the chil-dren all loved their Chinese food and getting to grips with noodles! The Chinese New Year celebration days were extremely successful and the pupils I spoke to throughout the day talked of how these opportunities and time to explore the world around us are really valuable to them. All children received an SMSC Award in assembly today for their participa-tion in their cultural development. I look forward to planning more exciting experiences for our SMSC development in the future.

Year 5 Ukulele Lessons This term, year 5 have been learning the ukulele during their weekly music lessons. This week they used their understanding of chords to create a chord sequence and performed them to the rest of the class using a variety of strumming patterns. They then performed 'I'm Yours' by Jason Mraz using the chords of C, G, Am and F. Well done year 5!

Mrs Harrison-Poole

Nursery This week we have enjoyed playing outside in 'The Quad' and have learnt lots of new skills!

We built a wooden ramp that we walked on...it was quite tricky to keep our balance, but with perseverance we managed to do it! We have also conquered the climbing frame, which is a little harder to climb than the one in Kindergarten’s play area...with some help we have found various ways of reaching the top!

We also had a lot of fun playing with noodles and pasta in our messy tray this week, we used our fingers and spoons to try and pick them up.

We have been reading a lots of books, and our favourite this week has been 'Room on the Broom' the children have been asking for this book on various occasions and love to join in with us when we are reading to them!

The Nursery Team

Kindergarten We have had such an exciting week, we have been celebrating 'Chinese New Year' and have had so many different activities to join in with! At the start of the week Chang Chang brought in some special Chinese outfits that he wears when celebrating Chinese New Year. The Kindergarten children were very lucky to be able to try on the beautiful clothes!! We have had a go using chop sticks, we had to try and pick up Prawn Crackers, Popcorn and Rice Crispies...it was very tricky!

In Art and Craft we painted some Red, Black and Gold symbols, and we made some Chinese drums! Kindergarten really enjoyed our Chinese dance workshop, learning lots of new dance moves using ribbons. We also had a great time making some Silk paintings. We look forward to our new topics af-ter Half Term.

The Kindergarten Team

Year 1 Year 1 have had a very busy and fun week! In Maths we have been halving shapes and amounts. Halving Hippo has been helping Starfish class to share different amounts equally!

In English we have been looking at the Chinese New Year Story. We have worked hard to sequence the story and have also wrote some sentences to describe what has been going on at certain parts of the story!

On Tuesday it was Internet Safety Day and we had to help Smartie the Penguin make the right deci-sions whilst using the internet! We then created some posters showing key things to remember when using the internet!

We have loved the Chinese New Year Celebrations this week and have also created our own Chi-nese pictures, had a go at writing in Chinese and also created our own Chinese Dragons!

Miss Snook and Miss Simmons

Internet Safety Day Tuesday was a busy day in school. We celebrated the Chinese New Year but also a number of Safer Internet Day events took place.

Thank you to all parents who attended the Internet Safety talk at 8.30am. It went on a little longer than expected but covered many aspects of how the internet is used and how this is changing. I will be sending out the PowerPoint that was used in the near future.

In the afternoon years 4-6 attended a 4 school video conference call with United Learning head office talking about online images and how to be careful with personal pictures. Children of all the schools could be seen online and interact with each other. This is something we hope to do more in the future. It was a very informative e-safety assembly which gave us food for thought.

As with many subjects, one off events are great but we will be continuing our e-safety in our ICT lessons all year. If you have any questions about e-safety please contact me.

Year 3 LOC Week

Year 3 have had an incredible LOC Week carrying on the theme of Chinese New Year. We made our own Chinese wishing tree in the woods and then re-created this in the classroom using the nature we had collected and finger painting. We made life sized Chinese dragons using leaves for scales, over lapping them to create an armour effect. We have learnt traditional Chinese tales and performed them using masks we had made. We learnt the story behind the ‘Willow Pattern’ plate and recreated our own. Year 3 learnt Chinese numerals for mathematical challenges as well as other Chinese symbols to make decorations.

For homework, the children researched the zodiac animal that represented the year they were born. They used this to create an information page that was organised using sub headings and bullet points.

On our Forest School day Year 3 braved the cold to have a day full of Chinese New Year related activities. These included making their own chopsticks to eat the noodles they had cooked on the fire, whittling willow to create charcoal for drawing trees and making Chinese dragons using clay and resources from the woods. What a fun week of fantastic learning opportunities!

Year 2 Year 2 have continued their cross-curricular learning this week by thinking about how to keep our bodies healthy, discovering what animals and humans need to survive and even took part in a First Aid Training session provided by St John’s Ambulance. During the session the children were all fully engaged and were commended by Peter (the trainer) for their excellent behaviour! They listened intently and asked appropriate questions politely.

Everyone learned something new including the teachers! Did you know that the recovery position is the single piece of basic first aid that saves the most amount of lives each year? It’s definitely a skill worth knowing! As well as perfecting this, the children learned how to dress an arm wound using a single bandage and how important it is to check that this has not been tied too tightly. There were many volunteers including Miss Waldron who had to pretend that she had some dirt in her eye. The treatment for this was to flush out the eye and then have both eyes covered by bandages.

We continued the day by learning about the life of Mary Seacole. Another important female figure in the development of nursing and medicine. Later on we continued our art work by adding detail to our ‘Hospital in a Box’. The children have all really enjoyed discovering the story of Florence Nightingale across the term, let’s see what next term has in store…

Miss Waldron and Mrs Doohan

Reception Reception have enjoyed a busy end to the half term. We have continued with the Chinese New Year topic and thoroughly enjoyed Wednesday’s celebration day. In class we have been tasting prawn crackers, writing fortunes for play dough fortune cookies, making fans, Chinese dragons and much much more!

Have a super half term.

Miss Hayes and Mrs Naraine

This week 6JC read the Willow Pattern Story and then they created their own versions in book form. After that we looked at Willow Pattern china and they produced patterns to match their stories on paper plates. We had a great time making silk pictures too.

Year 6

Peter, Year 6 on his return from the HMS Raleigh in Plymouth. Peter was selected to represent Lilliput Sea Scouts in a swimming competition organised by the Navy and open to all Sea Scouts troops in the country. The event included two nights on the Navy base, early morning parade drills and swimming in an unheated pool! Peter did exceptionally well and won 4 medals (one for every event he was entered in), and helped Lilliput to second place in the overall competition.

Writing competition winner! The children have been writing Adventure Poems for the Lord Mayor of Bournemouth’s Poetry competition this month. I have uploaded the entries to the competition judges but chose one winner for school who was awarded a £5 Book voucher to spend at the book Fair in March. A big well done goes to Jack Heath in Year 3 for his wonderful Stig of the Dump inspired poem. The next competition has now closed and all entries for the Once Upon a Dream poetry competition have been collected. I will be choosing a school winner for this competition also, before sending off the entries to be judged. They will receive a £5 book token. There are two remaining Competitions for this term: The Radio 2, 500 words story and The ‘Wicked’ Young Writers 750 word story If your child wishes to enter the 500 word competition they have until 23rd Feb to write and upload their short stories onto the website: Chris Evans Radio 2 500 words short story competition. We will be working on the Wicked 750 stories in school after half term. Good Luck!!

Sports Round Up

A busy busy week in the PE department this week with a host of different fixtures and competitions taking place. On Tuesday we had the annual Poole Schools Swim gala for year 5 & 6. Our teams did fantastically well in all of the races, often getting places in 1st, 2nd or 3rd against some difficult opposi-tion. Well done to all of those who took part, we are now waiting for the gala results to see if any of our students are selected to take part in the Dorset wide school games. We hosted our annual U9 netball festival at BCS. A magnificent display from our year four girls meant that they finished 4th overall. Mrs Smith commented on how well they were working as a team and how proud she was of them competing against the other schools. Also, a big thank you to the year 6 helpers on the day. BCS also stole the show in the Moyles Court cross country event. All of our runners came in the top 26 out of over 100 participants on the day, we also had 3 BCS students in the top 6 runners. Congratulations to all of our runners: 1st George Mahon, 4th Aldo Bertorelli 6th Harry Knight 18th Claire Stuhlmacher 19th Sunny Jessett 20th Jamie Booth 22nd Sam Atkinson 26th Ruby Batt (out of 120 participants) And finally, the U11A rugby team travelled to Boundary Oak School to take part in their annual 16 team 7’s tournament. Despite facing some difficult opposition in the group stage we eventually ended up 2nd in the plate tournament and played some free flowing rugby that was great to watch.
