GEOGRAPHY

The a r e a under ly ing t h e GOES and HERE c la ims i s e s s e n t i a l l y f l a t ,

occupying a c e n t r a l p a r t of t h e Mamin River watershed. Despi te

t h e broad-val ley a s p e c t of t h i s area, overburden coverage i s n o t

gene ra l ly t h i c k . Th i s i s a t t e s t e d t o by r e l a t i v e l y abundant outcrop

i n t h e Mamin River and a main t r i b u t a r y which branches southwester ly

a c r o s s t h e GOES c la ims.

Timber cover i s n o t g e n e r a l l y t h i c k , and t e r r a i n n e g o t i a b i l i t y

i s good.

Other geographical a s p e c t s a r e s i m i l a r t o those elsewhere on t h e

Queen C h a r l o t t e I s l a n d s .

A p r e l i m i n a r y p r o s p e c t i n g and g e o l o g i c a l a p p r a i s a l of t h e GOES

and HERE claims i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e y are most ly , or p o s s i b l y e n t i r e l y ,

u n d e r l a i n by T e r t i a r y Masset Formation v o l c a n i c s . The rock t y p e s

observed w e r e a s fo l lows :

Uni t 1 - F e l s i c v o l c a n i c s , w h i t e t o p a l e green , mainly r h y o l i t e

w i t h b o t h p y r o c l a s t i c and f low-banded t e x t u r e s (undif f e r e n -

t i a t e d on Fig. 4 c ) . They are f r e q u e n t l y , o f t e n h i g h l y ,

p y r i t i z e d .

Uni t 2 - Basal t ic t o a n d e s i t i c v o l c a n i c s , b l u e g reen , o f u n c e r t a i n

t e x t u r e . The age r e l a t i o n t o U n i t 1 i s n o t known. '

Unit 3 - A pyroclastic/agglomeratic u n i t w i t h mixed fragments

o f U n i t s 1 and 2. The l a r g e r f ragments are subrounded

t o subangular , sometime's a t t a i n i n g a few metres i n d i a -

meter ,and s e t i n a t u f f a c e o u s mat r ix .

Unit 4 - Basa l t i c dykes, w i t h n e a r n o r t h e r l y s t r i k e s and s t e e p

w e s t e r l y d i p s .

Unit A - A l t e r e d rocks , s o f t , o f t e n p y r i t i c , o f u n c e r t a i n primary

composi t ion b u t m o s t l i k e l y maf i c vo lcan ic .

GEOCHEMISTRY

The geochemical r e s u l t s w e r e d i s a p p o i n t i n g . N o Au va lue exceeded

20 ppb, and t h e best A s v a l u e s w e r e 60 and 80 ppm. The Hg showed a

l i t t l e m o r e l i f e , b u t s i n c e t h i s w a s i n t h e v i c i n i t y of b a s a l t

dykes it probab ly reflects f a u l t i n g .

The p r o g r e s s i o n f o r A u and A s i s i n t e r e s t i n g , and probably v a l i d

d e s p i t e t h e s m a l l number of samples. I t may be s a f e t o s a y t h a t

t h e r e i s a mi ld i n c r e a s i n g d i l u t i o n of Au v a l u e s and a mi ld enhance-

ment of A s v a l u e s i n t h i s p a r t i c u l a r t e r r a i n d u r i n g secondary d i s p e r s i o n .

I t a l s o s e e m s l i k e l y on t h e b a s i s of t h e s e comparisons, t h a t no

s u i t a b l y s t r o n g bedrock geochemical r e sponse would go undetec ted

i n t h e s o i l s and s i l ts .

CONCLUSIONS

Although t h e geology of t h e c l a i m s , c o n s i s t i n g o f T e r t i a r y v o l c a n i c s

and a h i g h p r o p o r t i o n of f e l s i c p y r o c l a s t i c s , i s f avourab le , t h e

absence of any marked geochemical r e sponse i s n o t encouraging.

The go ld ana lyses w e r e d e t e c t e d by us ing a Techtron model AA5 Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer wi th a gold hollow cathode Lamp. The r e s u l t s were r ead o u t on a s t r i p c h a r t recorder . A hydrogen lamp w a s used t o correct any background in t e r f e rences . The go ld va lues i n p a r t s pe r b i l l i o n were c a l c u l a t e d by comparing them w i t h a set of g o l d s tandards.

(b) The w e t samples were d r i e d i n a v e n t i l a t e d oven.

( c ) The d r i e d s o i l and s i l t samples w e r e s i f t e d by hands us ing a 8" d iameter 80-mesh s t a i n l e s s s teel s i eves . The p l u s 80-mesh f rac ; t i o n w a s r e j e c t e d and t h e minus 80-mesh f r a c t i o n w a s t r a n s f e r r e d i n t o a nwq bag f o r a n a l y s i s later.

(a) 0.25 gram o f t h e minus 80-mesh sample w a s used. Samples were weighed out by u s i n g a top - load ing balance.

Samples w e r e h e a t e d i n a sand ba th w i t h concen t r a t ed p e r c h l o r i c a c i d (70 - 72% HCLOL, by weight ) a t a medium h e a t f o r four hours.

(c) The concen t r a t ion of t he a r s e n i c was determined c o l o r i m e t r i c a l l y by comparing t h e i n t e q s i t y o f t h e color o f t h e r e d complex wi th a set of known s t anda rds prepared i n a s i m i l a r f a sh ion as t h e s amp1 e s .
