eldon Ball, offshore eldon Ball is the senior editor, technology & economics, for offshore magazine and conferences director for pennwell’s us offshore group. he previously served as editor-in-chief and associate publisher of offshore, responsible for all print, online, and conference content for the pennwell offshore group. prior to joining pennwell in 2002, he held a number of writing, editing, and communications positions with enron, lyondell chemical, pennzoil, texas eastern corp., and Bmc software. he previously has served as editor and associate publisher of petroleum management magazine, editor of ocean oil weekly report, product marketing manager for Bmc software, and media relations manager for texas eastern corp. he has a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the university of texas at austin.

Jon unwin, shellJon currently holds the position of safety manager for shell upstream americas and global manager of operational safety.

Jon’s previous roles include vice president, safety, environment, and sustainable development for shell deep water; operations manager for the ursa asset, a large production and drilling platform with sub-sea developments in the gulf of mexico; and regional maintenance and integrity manager for shell e&p americas.

Jon graduated with honors in marine engineering from the university of newcastle upon tyne, england. he began his career with exxon in ship repair and maintenance and since joining shell in 1990 Jon has worked in operations, maintenance, engineering, construction, commissioning, and hse in the netherlands, the uk, and the usa.

KeYnote presentAtIonchristina sistrunk, vice president – producing assets, deep water gomshell energy resources companychristina sistrunk is a graduate of the ohio state university with a B.s. in chemical engineering. she joined shell in 1998 after working for the amoco production company where she had worked in a variety of engineering and operations management roles all focused on gulf of mexico production and development. since joining shell, christina has worked in the deepwater engineering projects organization, as operations manager, operations skill pool manager, hsse manager – americas region, and gulf of mexico east asset manager. christina’s last posting was in the netherlands as the asset integrity program manager, which she began at the start of 2008. this role required leading a global effort to improve process safety across shell’s upstream business. her current position is vp - producing assets, deep water-gom.

todAY’s pIpelIne pIggIng: how smArt Is “smArt”? michael mcgee, Quest integritygrouppipeline integrity management is a difficult thing. historically, smart pigging technologies have been able to provide operators some degree of benchmarking, identification and understanding of damage mechanisms affecting subsea pipelines. today’s operators, however, face increasing difficulties as development and production fields trend towards deeper, more complex operations and corresponding challenges arise. traditional methods of smart pigging are not always sufficient in such environments. in this paper, we will explore the evolution of pipeline pigging, what historically has been provided to operators, how modern smart pigs address difficult environments, and examine benefits beyond conventional capabilities.

michael mcgee is a technical adviser for Quest integrity group’s pipeline division. Before joining Quest, mcgee spent six years with rosen inspection technologies working his way from technician to lead area manager–technical services for north america. he also lectures for the petroleum extension service of the university of texas.

dr. monty sullivan is chancellor of delgado community college, the largest community college in the louisiana community and technical college system. the lctcs has provided training statewide following the deepwater horizon oil spill. dr. sullivan has been instrumental in systems efforts to address regulatory changes that are impacting educational requirements.

aaron davis is a production superintendent with anadarko petroleum company and is in his 40th year with the company.HehasbeeninDeepwatersince1995whenhemanagedtheStartupofNeptune,theWorld’sfirstfloatingproduction spar. most recently, he was the superintendent at startup for anadarko’s independence hub facility. over the last few years, aaron’s responsibilities have also included the recruiting, hiring and development of anadarko’s future offshore operating personnel. he brings a wealth of knowledge and creative ideas to this area.

darcy strain is with chevron upstream & gas and is a training & competency advisor. his experience covers 25 years in upstream operations including roles as operations supervisor, training & development coordinator, competency development coordinator and training & competency advisor.

lessons leArnedtrey phillips, J. connor consultingregulatory lessons learned, from drills, plans and training. a look at both industry exercises and Bsee unannounced exercises and how the landscape has changed in the deepwater community.

trey phillips has worked with J. connor consulting since 1995 and holds the position of drills manager. he has seen the drills landscape change from year to year and is working currently with a majority of the helix and mwcc members to implement exercise programs, specifically deepwater containment responses.
