FinanceSelf FinancedThis is when people work for themselves. They will save up money for a project to becompleted. Sometimes people start off by making their own small business such as creating a small film, they will sometimes create their own small t-shirt or business card business if they wanted to be involved in a printing company.

Employer/Client FinancedThis method of employment is when the client will provide a budget or a large amount of money. This will allow the project to be completed to a good standard. With everything that the employer needs.

Kick-starterThis way of finance is a good way to get started for new media producers. It is a website which allows media producers to create a new, unique individual idea. The idea will then get put on a website to try get funding. The kick-start website allows the public to fund whichever one they think has potential to become a good product the benefit of the public funding it is that most of the ideas give away freebies. For example if a movie wanted to be released they could give free tickets to the premier of the film.

FinanceWhich source of funding will be most likely for your production and why?

I am most likely to use self finance to complete my project this is because I am completing my project on my own. It is my responsibility to be in control of the equipment and the resources. My project shouldn’t need a lot of funding therefore I will be using self finance for my production.

Advantages Do not have to rely on other people for funding, this is an advantage as I will be making the money on my own, from my own project. Another advantage is that I will have control over what I have to produce.

DisadvantagesThe disadvantage for this source of finance is that I have all the responsibility to make sure that the project is completed by the deadline otherwise I could loose business. If there is a risk of the business being lost this means al money invest would be wasted on something that hasn’t become successful. It is my own responsibility to get the money for the project this could be a struggle if suffering with money issues. There is also a chance of financial problems rising.

Page 4: Pre production techniques

FinanceIn my production I will have to consider the different aspects on what I will need to spend my money

on I will have to consider each of these issues.

Personnel- If I need to hire any researchers, photographers and any other crew I will have to consider putting a budget on them.

Stock Images- If my images need to be borrowed of a website I will have to use stock images. These will need to be brought of a website. If they are unable to be brought then I will have to capture my own images.

Location/Studio Hire- The place that I am going to use to carry out my project will need to be considered if locations need to be booked and payed for then I will need to consider this.

Equipment Hire- I may use different types of equipment when carrying out my project such as a camera.

Printing- To present my project in a formal way I will need to print them out however this could be costly.

Food ingredients- If I decided that I am going to create food products to take images off or the ingredients I will have to consider the costs of the ingredients.

Time

To make sure that my project is completed on time and finished by the deadline I will have to make sure that I complete everything on time and to a good standard. To do this I will have to make sure that there is plenty of time to complete my project I can achieve this by planning my activities. Note down what needs to be completed and when by also writing down how I can achieve this will benefit me into being more organised with my project. Being organised is one of the key aspects that will be needed when completing the project, this is to make sure that things do not get behind. Keeping track of my progress and being motivated for the project will give me the advantage of making sure that my work is completed on time.

Time

Contingency time is the extra time planned and given in a project to make sure that if anything goes wrong then there is extra time for the problem to be fixed and sorted out again. I will use contingency time as if there are any problems caused during my project I will be able to fix them without getting behind my progress. An example of if something went wrong would be if I was to cook my food and I was cooking a pizza however I left it in the oven for too long and it was well burnt then I would need extra time to re- bake the pizza as I wouldn’t be able to take a photo of it. Contingency time will be beneficial to my project in case any problems do occur then I will be aware of them and I will be able to manage the problems in a professional manner instead of panicking. I think contingency time is important as there could be many risks that could happen and preparing contingency time prevents the project getting behind.

Personnel

My team will consist of only 2 people, I have decided to only use a small team so that we are able to focus more on the project to be more successful. I have also decided to only have a team of 2 because I think that the project will be much more controlled. It will saves costs of having other crew members and it will also make the organisation of the project more at ease. The bigger the team the harder it will be to organise everyone so I think that working as a pair will be easier. It will also save time, the work will be split into half so that we both have equal amounts to complete and then the work will then be put together. I think that working in a smaller team means that we can both complete the work on time and to a good quality standard. We will be working as individuals however completing work as a team.

PersonnelFor the production to be completed the different job roles will include..

A Photographer- One of us with the more advanced skill of photography will be the photographer in this project they will have the role of capturing images of the food. They will need studio experience, equipment knowledge and Photoshop skills incase the photos need editing.

A Copy Writer- This job will include writing up the information needed on the recipe cares. The copy writer will need to be a fast typer and good use of English.

Graphic Designer- The graphic designer in our pair will need experience on Photoshop and they will also have to have a creative mind.

Model- We may need a model for our project to model the food. They will include holding the food and advertising it. The model will need to be confident and it is better if they have had some modelling experience before.

Chef/Expert- As we are creating recipe cards it is important that we have a experienced person cooking so that the food turns out to be the best standard it can for the photographs. We are unable to hire a chef to cook the food however we will cook the food ourselves whilst someone else photographs.

Page 9: Pre production techniques

PersonnelTo find the people and crew that I need to complete my project I will need to carry out and

research into how I can find the different jobs roles, different sources which I could use include..

-I will probably be able to find many jobs roles from my network and knowing different people. As we are working in a pair we will know a range of different people and a wider number of people including friends from our area and also our family could help us with our project.

- Advertising in magazines and on job advertisement websites is also a source in which we could use to find vacancies. Examples of where we can advertise for jobs is the Guardian Website, also media job websites such as media UK is a specialist website that specialises in media jobs. Putting an advertisement in a trade publication such as a photography magazine for a photographer is also a source which we can find job roles.

Locations

To identify the locations needed for my production I can produce a recces. A recce is a piece of production work that can help make a decision which is the best location and weather it should be used or not. Using recces I can find out different aspects and I can then compare locations. Recces are useful to find out different things these include.

How long it may take to travel to a location and how far it is.If permission may be needed for a location for example if photographs needed to be taken in the

studio I will need to ask if its okay to use the studio. Is the location appropriate for what I need to complete my project? Is the location safe to useI will also be able to find out if I will need any money to get to my locations, or any money to book

them.

When looking at my different locations I will have to identify and note there is any risks or problems that could happen and occur if I decide to use that location. The problems could effect my project by limiting my production and stopping me complete what I need to so it is important that I identify the risks so that I am aware of them if they happen.

Page 13: Pre production techniques

LocationsAre there any limitations or risks you would need to consider for your locations?

Location Limitation/RiskStudio Can hard to book as it is, lighting can be dangerous if it gets too hot.

Home There could be risks at home such as loose cables, hot drinks, electricity cables about, other people could also be distracting. It is important

College Class Looking at a computer for too long can cause eye strain and also it is more easy to loose concentration so it is important to keep motivated and focused.

Codes of Practice - ClearancesWhat is a model/location release form and why is it important to your production?

It is important that before carrying out the production if I have any models to be used during my project or if I am visiting any different locations that I sign a model and location release form.

This document allows me to visit my desired locations and to use the models that I need to complete the project it is a small contract that is signed by the models and the owner of the location to say that they approve and that I am allowed to use the location and model. It is important that relevant permission has been allowed to take photographs of the models and that I have permission to visit the locations that I wanted. If I do not have a allowed release form then I am unable to use that model or the location then I will have to change my project. Being allowed full rights to photograph in my desired location will allow me to carry on with my project and not suffer any consequences. However if I do not collect the correct agreements and the signatures of the owner of the location and the model then it could cost in being sued by the owners or by the models.

Codes of Practice – Regulatory Bodies

Which regulatory body’s guidelines would you need to follow when creating your production?

Considering specific regulatory before completing my production is one of the vital things that I will have to do, this is because the specific regulatory bodies could effect my production. An example of a self regulatory body that makes sure that adverts are not dangerous, harmful or fake is the ASA which stands for The Advertising standards authority. The ASA is a company which deals with complaints made by the public about the advertisements if they are unsuitable. The ASA will then look into studying the advertisement and if that it doesn’t meet the correct requirements for the authority then it is ASA’s reasonability to deal with the advert and make it banned. For example if a advert was advertising food or drink it is essential that the adverts are suitable and especially suitable to children as they are vulnerable to seeing inappropriate things in advertisements. It is important that every advertisement follows the code of practice for all adverts which includes requirements and the rules of advertising.

Page 17: Pre production techniques

Codes of Practice – Regulatory Bodies

Where can you source information from regarding these guidelines?

This information and the codes of practice can be seen on (http://www.cap.org.uk)This website provides relevant information of the rules that the advertisements will need to follow if they want to become a success.

The cap non- broadcast code is available at (http://www.cap.org.uk/Advertising-Codes/Non-broadcast-HTML.aspx) this page is split into each section which will have to be considered when creating a advertisement such as children, alcohol and motoring.

The subject of food and drink is especially important and has to be looked at closely when being advertised so the code of practice for the food and soft drink advertisements is
