FinanceGive a definition for each of the terms listed Self Financed When the maker of the product finances the project themselves. The funds can be taken out of a savings

account or their wages depending on job of the person. This is very doable if the project is only a small one and doesn’t cost very much. An advantage of this is that if the project is completely solo then you gain 100% of the profits. However, if the project is large then the funds will be too which isn’t reachable for self finance.

Employer/Client Financed This is when the client finances the project. They tell you how much the project will cost and send you away with

that amount of money. This is good for expensive projects as the maker of the product doesn’t have to find their own funds. However, you will more than likely have to give the money back or give them a large percentage of the profits. Also if the project goes over budget you have to make up the difference yourself with your own money.

KickstarterKickstarter is a organisation that allows the public to help fund projects. The maker of the product gives a

description of the product and asks the public if they want him to make it, if they do then they will give the creator a certain amount of money. This amount is only small, an average of £10, but if a lot of people donate the money then eventually enough money will be raised. This site is becoming very popular with over two million pledgers in 2012. Some examples of successful Kickstarter projects are FUBAR, which made in the top ten on the New York Times Best Sellers List, and Incident in New Baghdad, which once nominated for an Oscar.

FinanceWhich source of funding will be most likely for your production and why? Self finance will be the way we fund our project. Most of the resources are free as we

have access to most of them at home and at college. The only thing we will need to get is the food and ingredients. This is if we end up deciding to make the food, we could use stock images or not include images at all. This would make the project very cheap to produce and essentially free.

Advantages It is your own money so you have a lot more freedom during the project. Their won’t

be people checking you work all the time to see if it is appropriate or not. As long as you stick to the brief you can do pretty much what you want. If you use someone else's money then they will have some sort of control over what you do.

DisadvantagesAll the money comes out of your own bank. If the product fails then it will really effect

you as it is your own money you have just lost. This will cause you to go into debt and struggle getting investors for new projects as you have bad history with producing projects.

FinanceList the aspects of your production that will require financeFood/Ingredients – The price of the food will depend on the recipes we decide to

produce. Some recipes might need more ingredients and some may need more expensive ones. We won’t need to buy all of the ingredients as the more standard items will already be stocked in our kitchens.

Travel costs – The place where we will be working most is college and my house. This means we will need to travel daily to the designated building. Bus fares and petrol money for cars will add to the overall cost of the project.

Specialised food equipment – If the recipes requires special equipment in order to prepare the food then this will need to purchased also. This will include things like shape cutters or maybe a pasta maker that rolls the sheets of pasta out thin enough.

TimeWhat methods could you employ to ensure you stick to your deadlines and why would this be beneficial to your project?Have a schedule, this could help us stay up to date on what parts we have done and

what need doing. The schedule will include free periods that can allow for extra time in case we hit a brick wall and something goes wrong or takes longer than we thought.

Having a schedule will keep us on track and ensure we will get the project done before the deadline. It will also help us know which person will be what piece of work. Otherwise two of us could do it or none of us could. This is why contingence time is important.

Page 6: Pre Production Techniques

TimeWhat is contingency time and how might this be beneficial to your project?Contingency time is extra time you have planned in case something goes wrong and

you need to redo it. This can be useful because instead of rushing to finish the product in time you have a few days or a week where you can take your time and complete the wrong aspect of the work.

If there is nothing wrong with the work then you can use the extra time to ensure your product is done to a high standard. Pick out the weak aspects of the project and try to improve them.

Something that could go wrong with our project is that we over cook the food and it doesn’t look appetising. Having time helps this as we can make it again to a higher standard and then take pictures of it. We would take pictures of the poorer quality food to ensure we have an image for that card.

PersonnelWhat size team will you use for your production (large or small)? How many people will you have in your team? Why?There will be a small group of three people, we will only have three altogether as we cover different

section of producing a recipe card. We believe that if our group was to large then it would be to complicated to finish, by only having three people it means things can be easily scheduled and not have the worry about collecting other people’s work. We all go to York college together which means we see each other all the time, due to this we are able to talk about the project at any point. It’s true that the more people you have, the less work you need to create but if us three balance the work out then it gives us the chance to be busy most of the time. I believe that if there are three of us then it might be more difficult to have a wide range of resources because I think we have the right equipment to use for a project like a camera and also a household to be able to cook the products. By having three of us altogether it gives us a chance to not waste time but to cover a lot of work together in detail for example one person could take the images whilst another person plans the graphic design. Whilst the other person will be writing down all the notes that we would need for the theme of the cad. The eventual profit would be split between the three of us because that was be the fairest option, that is much better than having a huge group of us because then we wouldn’t get as much is everybody got a split. Another advantage of having 3 altogether is that we can work as a group to keep things organised and to produce a schedule that will really fit what we are doing. If we had worries then we could discuss that with one another without being a issue.

PersonnelWhat job roles would you have in your production and what skills and experience would be required?Photography, chef, graphic designer and copy writer. Marie will mostly be doing photography as she has

experience in this field, she practices a lot due to her growing passion in this area. This is because Marie’s family members used to be professional photographers, this is meant that she has captured the natural skills needed for this project. She also cooks food in her spare time and has grown up watching her mum and grandma cook, this means she understands ingredients and the amount you need to put in each time. Me and Charlotte will be doing the graphic designing and copy writing as we both understand these areas, they are creative and exciting areas to work on. As our theme are for elderly pensioners we believe that if we make our graph designs more elegant then our target audience are more likely to pick it up. It is known that elderly people like to send in café shops and like to buy cakes and things. We think why not produce recipes that would treat them whilst having a cup of tea, just like afternoon tea. The graphic design would be quite sophisticated by having old fashioned font just like ‘Kunstler script’ which makes the letters look more elegant. By making the cards more feminine I feel that the elderly women are more likely to pick up the card s which means they likely take friends or their family. This means more people will enjoy our recipes. During our education we have grown up with new technology that’s fast and easy, this is what will help me and Charlotte when we are graphic designing because we know the tools needed to create a high quality recipe card. Marie also has good creative ideas that would contribute greatly to our graphic designing, with what colours used and images that would bring in our audience.

PersonnelHow could you find people to be in your production team?

There are many ways in which I could do this, finding people to go into our production team is important because the more people’s input that’s are involved then the more detailed it’s going to get. The first thing I would do is going on certain networking sites that have my friends on, I would be able to ask them easily about what we are doing and how they could contribute. This is good as us three have a good amount of friends between us which means it’s more likely that will gain a lot of friends to the job. All three of us have a job at the moment which means we can get in contact with our employers if they were interested in it, as our jobs aren’t that creative for this kind of job, it would make more sense to ask people from past education to see if they were interested. Such as high school where we did a variety of subjects, this could cover a lot of students that would rather do something creative and fun instead of doing work inside a classroom. Family can also be a big impact if they wanted to join the production team, this is because they might have similar things in common like we do and they will have better experience in the different subjects that we do. By having the family around it adds comfort and relaxation when doing the work instead of frustration. To connect with a larger audience I would contact a local newspaper and I would ask if there was anybody that wanted to do some work in creating a recipe card. This is a good method for vacancy because young people aren’t able to get jobs so it’s more likely that people would be interested in the project. I would decorate the vacancy in our theme (afternoon tea style) quite posh and have pictures of cakes and things, this might bring a variety of people together that might end up interested.

LocationsWhat method could you employ to identify locations needed for your production (production/ post production facilities) and how could this be useful? When choosing a location for the many photographs use something called a recce which

means researching and visiting suitable locations for your shoot that can be taken back to the production mean to decide upon weighing up the pros and cons, this will mean that we have looked at all aspects and made in depth analysis, some of these questions we may ask ourselves include how long it may take to travel to these locations, if you need permission to use that location, is it related to the recipe cards that your making, health and safety aspects whether there is any danger or risk to personal safety, does it cost money whether this is to use this set, traveling or equipment costs. We would adapt this method to what we are creating in this case recipe cards so we would look to taking these photographs in a food based environment such as a kitchen using the mise-en scene expected in such a situation. Another factor is the theme of our recipe cards which are created for the older generation, vintage tea party esk so to build this into the shoot I would use teacups, tea china and floral displays, so locations that may look at using could be an abandoned barn or di-used stables to get this effect hanging bunting and tea lights around the area to get this effect. Other locations following the same lines could be a garden, caravan or café, then from these test shots we can make a final desion on the outcome of these photographs

Page 13: Pre Production Techniques

LocationsAre there any limitations or risks you would need to consider for your locations?

Location Limitation/RiskKitchen When working in a kitchen you need to be aware of the cooking equipment that could be switched on or be left

out when being in this type of environment or any long wires and cables that could left around which could cause a trip or slip, or caused by any ingredients that dropped when making these recipes

Barn With it been an old building you would need to be aware of this and make sure that people involved know this in the unlikely case that something was to fall or become lose. The bad weather could also restrict what you can

produce because of the lighting issues and any gaps on the roof. Garden The garden in which the shoot is chosen to take place in will need to be sanitary especially when food is involved,

another limitation might be in the change of weather that might effect when the shoot is taken place, because of the lighting and may effect the theme that the shoot was going for.

Café Using a café will help in following the theme and mise-en-scene of these recipe cards. But you will also need to make sure that the place is sanitary when using food, another limitation could be un the amount of the café that

you can use of the shoot but making sure it looks as realistic as possible. Caravan Using a caravan will also help to reflect the theme of the whole shoot but there would be some risks to look at

including the use of equipment in the kitchen area , as well as the surroundings and been aware of where you are.

Codes of Practice - ClearancesWhat is a model/location release form and why is it important to your production? When taking any photographs and you are using models you always need a model

release forms as well as for the chosen location for the shoot because with this it then allows you full right to the photographs that you product as without this you can have problems who owns products and getting sued by the owner of your chosen location or by the models.

When relating this to our own production we would need to look at possibly a model release form as we could use a hand model to create realistic photographs in appropriate setting. When looking at the location get a form filled in by the owner of the house used to take the photographs because the photographs will be taken in a kitchen which help to fit with other recipe cards

Page 15: Pre Production Techniques

Codes of Practice - LegalWhat legal requirements will you have to consider in your project and what aspects do they relate to?

Aspect of Production Legal ConsiderationPhotography Making sure that the work you are creating is your own photographs, but if you were using found

images sourced from the internet. Location forms are completed so that you get the needed signature to grant you permission to location set used, which means issues cant be thrown up around who’s

property and who the photographs belong to. Model release forms are signed, giving you permission to use these models and these photographs are then owned by the company.

Graphic design Making sure that work your creating is your own and aren't created from other recipe cards as this project has to show your own flair and creativity. As the brief has highlighted the main factors,

provides a good guideline for what is needed .Recipes When using recipes that have been sourced from the public domain whether this be from the internet

or recipe books, because if you were using any other form of recipes then you would need written permission to allow you to use this.

Copywriter Making sure your written copy is original and you own unless it is from the public domain such as books and via the internet.

Codes of Practice – Regulatory Bodies

Which regulatory body’s guidelines would you need to follow when creating your production? The ASA also known as the Advertising Standards Authority which is a self regulatory body which

makes sure that adverts don’t violate the rules that are set by the regulatory body making sure it isn’t harmful content too its audience or falsely advertise in order to increase sales, and so because our recipe cards involve food and drink these rules need to be heavily addressed in order abed by these rules.

Food, food supplements and associated health or nutritional claims “Public health policy increasingly emphasises good dietary behaviour and an active lifestyle as a means of

promoting health. Commercial product advertising cannot reasonably be expected to perform the same role as education and public information in promoting a varied and balanced diet but should not undermine progress towards national dietary improvement by misleading or confusing consumers” http://www.cap.org.uk/Advertising-Codes/Non-broadcast-HTML/Section-15-Food,-food-supplements-and-associated-health-or-nutritional-claims.aspx

Principle “The central principle for all marketing communications is that they should be legal, decent, honest and truthful. All

marketing communications should be prepared with a sense of responsibility to consumers and society and should reflect the spirit, not merely the letter, of the Code.” http://www.cap.org.uk/Advertising-Codes/Non-broadcast-HTML/Section-1-Compliance.aspx

Codes of Practice – Regulatory Bodies

Where can you source information from regarding these guidelines? You can souce information from the ASA website which is also know as

www.cap.org.uk . This gives you all the advertising codes relevant legislation and register of code changes. What they do is that they take away that’s offensive in adverts, this is important because it could affect the audience by offending them. This is because of there race, religion, gender and sex.
