GAIL BECKER – TURLOCK, CA CREATING OPTICAL ILLUSION RUGS

Gail Becker is a fibre artist and crafter with broad experience in needle arts and fibre manipulations. Gail earned her McGown Certification in 2003 and has taught ever since. She is comfortable teaching fine cut shaded rugs to wide-cut (#10) rugs and everything in between. She continues to explore form, line, shape, color, texture, space, and value. Gail has written articles for Rug Hooking

Magazine and the ATHA Newsletter. For more information visit www.gailbeckerrughooking.com

LYNNE HOWARD – CALGARY, AB WIDE AND TEXTUREDThe characteristics of textures: their various weaves, densities, thicknesses, colour combinations, middle values, muted tones, which we appreciate, also make them more challenging to work with. The results of our perseverance are worth the effort. Though not exclusively, the class will focus on the use of textures and wide cuts (#6 and up). We will discuss various elements as they relate to the use of wide cut strips and textures: making sense of our pattern, choosing backgrounds, colour planning, the importance of contrast, and the challenges and pitfalls that using textures can present. Find it and Finishers will also be welcome in class.

Lynne Howard was first introduced to rug hooking in the mid 1980s and gained her McGown Teachers accreditation in the mid 1990s. For over two decades she has taught rug hooking in her local Calgary community, in various venues in western Canada, in the western U.S. and Mexico. She is an enthusiastic dyer of wool, marketing her wools from her dye kitchen in Calgary.

DORIS NORMAN – FREDERICTON, NB CELTIC ART AND HERITAGE

In this fun course, we will hook Celtic art and illuminated letters influenced by the Book of Kells, Lindisferne Gospels and other books decorated by the Celts. Learning about the history of the Celts, colour planning, hooking and finishing a Celtic piece of student’s design or a purchased design will be emphasized. Celtic formulas, patterns and dyed wool will be available from the teacher. Any cut of new or reclaimed wool flannel or yarn, as well as other fabrics is encouraged. There is no shading involved. Suitable for intermediate to advanced students.

Doris Norman is a skilled rug hooker and instructor having taught courses at schools and workshops in the United States and Canada for the last thirty years. She is a certified Nova Scotia and Pearl McGown Teacher, specializing in Celtic Art, William Morris, Jacobean and Pictorial. Her work has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine, Rug Hooking Magazine, Deanne Fitzpatrick’s “Hook Me a Story” and is

Do you want to create a rug that looks three- dimensional? Starting with quilt blocks we will design rugs that contain optical illusions. Special emphasis will be placed on color (hue, value and intensity) and repeated images to create the “illusion.” Students will choose a traditional quilt block (tumbling blocks, attic windows, or log cabin) as the basis for their design. These rugs may be hooked in the students’ chosen cut (from #3 to #10) and may be of any size. At the end of this class students will have a solid foundation for creating the illusion of depth in geometrics and will be able to apply what they’ve learned to other types of designs, such as landscapes and portraits.
