Inside YogaLiving | Editor’s Note

Selfless ServiceIN MAY, YOGA LIVING COVERED THE TOPIC OF DHARMA, OR LIFE PURPOSE. We got

such an overwhelming response of positive feedback, that we decided to focus the

September/October issue on Karma Yoga, or Selfless Service. The concepts of Dharma and

Karma are closely related; once you know your purpose in life (Dharma), it is expressed while you

perform selfless service (Karma Yoga or the Yoga of Action). Nearly all the readers of Yoga Livingwould be considered “Karma Yogis” in the sense that they are at work in the world and/or raising fam-

ilies. Yet, few people who study Yoga know much about Yoga’s in-depth approach to work. Since most

of us do some form of work from sunrise to sundown, our lives can be greatly transformed by apply-

ing Yogic principles to our everyday living.

One lesson is to see the larger picture in whatever we are doing. If you are watching over a baby, you

are actually saving the child’s life – the baby would die if left unattended. Changing that diaper is per-

formed in line with the thought that you are greatly impacting that child’s life. By remaining connect-

ed to the higher purpose, changing a diaper becomes less of a discouraging activity, and you don’t care

if you are not getting paid for doing it.

If you just changed a car tire, you too may be saving lives. If you make breakfast, if you perform sur-

gery, if you sell insurance: each action can be viewed from a larger perspective that brings meaning

to what may appear to be a mundane task.

Many of us know this already when we are practicing our higher values. We know that everything in

our lives can be accomplished with love, faith, and compassion.

One thing we don’t know is that there is one “I” in selfless service. Normally, selfless service means that

the giver is devoid of a ‘self ’ for a short time, and therefore is a special person. But, in reality, when doing

a good deed we know we are doing the good deed. It is very difficult to avoid feeling a secret level of

pride when doing a good deed. When this happens, we end up creating resentment, and eventually it

leads to burn-out because our self is ignored. Each person has only so much energy to give before the

energy runs out.

The solution lies in being honest that it is impossible for the self (or ego) to be removed from an action

that we accomplish. My recommendation is to think about what you as the giver are gaining while

performing your selfless service. As I write this, I am thinking that I am gaining clarity about selfless

service. My actions throughout the day are going to feed my need to re-learn a new lesson about

being kind without feeling burned out. As you give, you can receive. When the giver receives, they

can keep giving within their power – both nourishing and being nourished.

At work, you get paid for giving, but you can always do kind things that are of your own volition.

Bringing your true self to your workplace or home can mean offering encouraging words and uplift-

ing energy to those around you – being a stable and positive force in stressful situations. Life is one

big circle, and when you contribute good energy into the circle, you receive that same good flowing

through you.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what can you

do for your country,” is a famous quote from the late President

Kennedy. I believe that he understood the concept of selfless service

well. As we approach election season, remember the good you do

is for all, including your self. Vote with your conscience, and reach

into the depths of your skillful heart, and discover how you can be

selfless and empowered at the same time!

Yoga Theory | by Michael Reddy, PhD

KARMA YOGA—THE YOGA OF WORK

AND SERVICE. In an increasingly sit-down, keyboard-focused, stare-at-

the-screen workplace, good cybersense canhelp you stay whole and healthy. So I couldwrite about ergonomic chairs, good monitorplacement, frequent stand-up-and-stretchbreaks. Those are all important. Care foryour body. Do your asanas. But you can lookup ergonomics easily elsewhere. Let’s talkhere about what you are exposed to on allthose screens, and in print as well.

In his book, Karma-Yoga, Vivekananda says,“The aim of all work is to bring out thepower of the mind... to wake up the soul.”My last CyberSense essay (in the previousissue, or at www.makecybersense.org) con-trasted reading with video. Too much video, especially with the prevalence of “eye-candy,”actually dulls the “power of your mind.”Attention span, and imaginative focus on themythic journey of your own soul—these aremore likely strengthened by reading.

But with all the material your mind con-sumes, via whatever media, at work or play—there is this other, deeper issue. What kind ofmessages are pouring in? And what are youdoing with those messages? Even if, or espe-cially if, most of what you consume is “enter-tainment,” Vivekananda’s statement sug-gests that there is work, and service, to bedone around that consumption. Are the pre-dominant messages you receive these dayshelping to “wake up” your soul and the soulsof your loved ones? If they are not, what canyou do about it?

Most of us are immersed these days, like it ornot, in a sea of “content.” That’s the modernword for stories, lessons, ads, what-have-you.Technology helps content, especially advertis-ing, creep onto every available space. Videoscreens now blare at us from the tops of gaspumps and come installed in new cars. Ani-mated promotions dance annoyingly acrossTV programs you watch, or splash across thetext you’re reading on web pages. All this goesdouble for the younger ones—plugged intotheir iPods, trading text messages and videos. And the outpouring of paper junk mail is justsimply an ecological crime.

Now, in fact, it is both very easy and pro-foundly distressing to distill out the mainmessages carried along in this flood. Message

one is: consumption of manufac-tured products, including morecontent, is what beautiful, suc-cessful, fulfilled people do in life.Doing this well—acquiring morewealth to buy more, spendingmore time plugged in so that youknow more sooner than yourneighbor—these things willmake you like the ghostly iconsof happiness dancing so seduc-tively on those screens. Messagetwo is: disease and mood disor-ders lurk everywhere, and thesooner you accept your need forthe latest drugs and the finest hospitals, thesafer you will be. Your body does not haveprofound healing powers. Big science and bigpharma are now your best hope.

And message three, conveyed mostly by theselective choice of what is newsworthy, is: donot trust your fellow humans—other races, other nations, criminals, crazies, splintergroups, even people right there in your owncommunity—they are a constant threat toyou. We might broaden this one slightly andjust say—fear. Fear earth catastrophes, infra-structure breakdowns, failed political systems, and your own dying, disease-prone body.

I could add another two themes around sexand violence—but there’s not space and youget the picture. All these themes are alldreadful, dead-end, self-fulfilling lies.Joseph Campbell says Western culture is infree-fall and you can see it here very clearly. How would it feel to be surrounded by aflood of artistically beautiful content imply-ing the opposite of these messages. “Remem-ber—wholeness lies within, on the uniquepath of your own heart.” “Always trust yourown body first.” “Learn and teach others totrust humanity.”

Of course I am sketching here with a verybroad brush. There are many exceptions (thismagazine, for instance; the Christian mediaperhaps). But many of the exceptions aresmall and under siege. “I don’t pay attentionto the negative stuff,” you may say, “It does-n’t affect me.” Excellent. But be very awareof how much harder avoiding it gets everyyear. That brings us to our candidates forniyama (yogic observance) and yama (yogicrestriction) in this area. There is mental worknecessary to stay aware of what kind of mes-

sages are being pumped at you, and how theyare affecting you and your loved ones. Theniyama is: do that work, cultivate messageawareness. The yama is: find ways to limityour exposure to toxic messages and replacethem with honest and healthy ones. Theservice here is: help your loved ones do thisalso. Think of these as “media hygiene.”

There is so much that could be said hereabout HOW to do this. I can only hint hereat a few possibilities. If you don’t have tech-nology to remove commercials from whatyou watch, shut the sound off. Stand up andstretch, maybe, during those moments. Ingeneral, make up anti-commercials, whereinyou use your own imaginative powers to sella positive truth that is being denied by thead you are exposed to. Instead of, “beerbrings me beauty and friends,” make theaffirmation, “yoga, meditation, and reallyhonest communication bring me beauty andfriends.” Be aware that “product placement”(writing brand name products into thescripts themselves) is becoming a preferredform of advertising. If it fits your taste, watchJohn Stewart and Stephen Colbert skewerwith humor the absurdities of the newsmedia.

Finally, I would remind you of somethingthat Dion Fortune explains in her book, Psy-chic Self-Defense. An incantation is an artisti-cally powerful affirmation that works bestwhen experienced over and over again, enter-ing the sub-conscious most easily as the con-scious mind stops paying attention to it.Whether you think of it as magic, or simplyhypnosis, today’s media creates extremelypowerful, really toxic incantations. Lettingthem run on, as background noise, is nothealthy. ▲

IN MY FIFTY-EIGHT YEARS I HAVE HAD A BUNCH

OF DIFFERENT JOBS. Did I love them all? No!What was it about some of the jobs that made

them more satisfying and fun? Perhaps my attitude hadsomething to do with it. I do work for money, and I dowork out of necessity, as most of us do I suppose, butwhat is it that changes the level of joy I get from a job?Could it have something to do with the level of love Iput into the job? Where does my attitude towards workcome from? Hmmm…

The Bhagavad Gita teaches me that I should always workor take action, but not to focus or attach myself to the“fruits” or outcome of that action. Selfless action is theunderlying concept of Karma Yoga (cause and effect),and is one path to the eventual release from all karma.Krishna tells Arjuna that every selfless act is born fromthe Self, and that all life is affected by this. He says,“Whoever violates it, indulging his senses for his ownpleasure and ignoring the needs of others, has wastedhis life. But those who realize the Self are always satis-fied. Having found the source of joy and fulfillment, they no longer seek happiness from the external world. They have nothing to gain or lose by any action; neitherpeople nor things can affect their security.”(3:16,17,18) Yes, I say... I can do this!

Oops, but then along comes my Ego lodged in my thirdchakra, telling me that my work is importantbecause it is proof of who I am and how greatI am. The more “fruits” I can gather andshow for myself, the happier I will be.My self-worth is based on how success-ful I am in the eyes of others in allthings, not only work but in sports orappearance or fame or wealth. Right? The more I satisfy mysenses and indulgemy desires the happi-er I will be. And if I amnot really quite happyenough right now,I can fix that sim-ply by gatheringmore stuff! Maybe anew car will do it!

Whew! Now it feels like I amcaught in a vicious cycle, and that noamount of peddling can bring me

peace of mind, happiness, satisfaction, balance, or joy. Iam tired and overwhelmed and lost. I am also unhappyin my work, because the goals of that work are to estab-lish myself as “perfect” in the eyes of others, to gainapproval or acknowledgment. How long can I keep thisup? I am not bringing love to my work or finding satis-faction simply in the doing. I am seeking rewards.Rewards that do not bring joy, but constantly kindle theego. Yikes!

So, now I can look back and ask myself, “What weremy motives by taking jobs in the past, and how didthose motives effect how I felt about the job?” It turnsout that the jobs I took to seek approval and acceptanceby others were the jobs that were the least satisfyingand joyful. They were also the jobs that were morelucrative in the compensation department, but whatdid I give up in return for money? I gave up balance, peace of mind, joy, and knowing that my self-worth isbased simply on the fact that I exist and nothing cantake that away now or in my passing. As Horton said(Horton Hears A Who), “I am here, I am here, I amhere.” And in the end, that is all that matters.

Today, I often tell people that I have to be one of theluckiest people around. I have two jobs, one is at a yogastudio teaching yoga (and working on Yoga Living Mag-azine!) and welcoming people, and the other is workingwith an autistic child in a special program to help him

join our world. And the best part is I get tobe barefoot at both! I earn less now, but

am happier than I have ever been. I amgiving more today because I

choose to give more, andI am finding that themore I give the more Iactually get in return. Ino longer value “sta-tus,” but seek onlypeace of mind in know-

ing that I am helpingothers. I am at peace withmy third chakra, knowingthat my value to theworld is not governed byhow much I get, but byhow much I can givefor the sheer joy ofgiving. ▲

OFTEN, WHEN WE THINK OF

MARKETING, WE THINK OF

IT AS THE MEANS BY

WHICH BUSINESSES SELL THEIR

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES. In theholistic community, sales and sellingoften feel intrusive.

The act of selling isn’t very pleasant; itentails trying to persuade someone topurchase your products and services. We often conjure up images of snakeoil salesmen, or trying to manipulatesomeone into spending money with us.

Of course we don’t want to come intoprosperity by manipulating someone,or being aggressive. But we do need tobe supported if we are to continue todo our wonderful healing work in theworld.

A balance must be struck. We must besupported in our business, and in orderto grow a truly thriving business, wemust conduct marketing activities. What if I told you that truly, the act ofmarketing was selfless? Hard to believe?

Marketing is selfless when it is createdto be supportive and nurturing. And, itis selfless when we use it as a means totell people what we do in the worldand how we can help them.

Marketing itself has very little to dowith selling. Truly effective marketingmakes a connection with the peoplewho need you, it provides value to thosepeople even before they come to you forproducts or services, and it helps peopleunderstand exactly how you can help

them. So, the true purpose of marketingis to support and nurture the peoplethat need you, so that they can feel safeinside your business.

When people feel connected to yourwork, they can see themselves insideyour business. For example, when youmeet someone new, and you tell themwhat you do, it’s better to tell themhow you serve. So if you’re a massagetherapist, rather than say, “I’m a mas-sage therapist,” you can make a con-nection by saying, “I’m a massage ther-apist, and I help athletes with chronicmuscle pain.”

Being very specific about what kind ofpeople you help and how you helpthem, allows people to feel connectionwith you. Once that connection isestablished, you can continue the rela-tionship by having a way for people tostay in touch with you. And that canbe done through a newsletter.

Your newsletter should take yourclients needs into account by providinginformative articles, or inspiration.Really nurture your relationships byproviding information and insight thatyour potential clients and clients findvaluable.

Through the connection you’ve estab-lished, and the relationship that youcontinue to build through yournewsletter, people truly get to knowyou and they understand exactly howyour business fits into their lives.

Making connections and developingrelationships are things that you must

take an active role in for your business. You must physically tell people thatyou are here, and what you can do tohelp them. Without this physicalpiece, your work goes unnoticed in theworld.

The truth is, we all lead such busylives. We are bombarded with informa-tion, and we are immersed in every-thing we have to do. Think about howmuch you filter out in a day just tokeep a clear mind. Your clients andpotential clients do the same thing.Marketing is necessary. You must takesteps to get the word out about yourpractice. If you don’t tell anyone aboutyour practice, you are keeping yourwork hidden, and that doesn’t serveanyone.

Not only is marketing necessary, butit’s something that must be a primaryactivity in your business. It’s notenough to take out one ad, or attendone networking event. You must con-sistently get yourself out in the worldwith the intention of connecting withmore and more people that need you.Marketing can be frustrating when itseems like your efforts aren’t working. It’s important to keep getting yourmessage out there. Don’t give up!

Marketing is selfless when it supportsand nurtures the people that need you.People want to work with you, theyneed your services. Marketing alsohelps your business grow and supportyou so that you can continue to dowonderful work in the world. ▲
