We’ve been on the lookout

all year for up-and-coming young colorists age 30 and under, who have what it takes to make it to the top. Think of them as the next generation of gifted colorists with as much passion as Chrystofer Benson, John Simpson or Fabio Sementilli, and join us in congratulating them for being singled out by salon owners and manufacturers, who recognize talent when they see it.

➻jessica nelson j {WELLA PROFESSIONALS}began working for Mario Tricoci in Chicago 10 years ago. Since

then she’s become a Future Professional Educator and an

Advance Skills Educator with the company. “I love color and

feel so incredibly blessed that I’ve found a career that resonates

with me,” says Jessica, who is a member of Cosmetologists

Chicago. Being open to change is key for this gifted colorist,

who is convinced that if you close yourself off you stop growing

and your art dies. Grateful for the mentors in her life, Jessica

believes that becoming an educator herself is a way to pay it

forward. “The meaning of life is to f nd your gift. The purpose of

life is to give it away,” she says, paraphrasing Pablo Picasso.

➻renee valerie wilson l{TIGI} was nominated by TIGI’s Richy Kandasamy.

U.S. Technical Creative Director at TIGI, so

we knew she had to have some serious hair

color chops. Based in New York City, Renee

is a TIGI Talent Colour Educator, which

means she travels all over the country

doing shows and platform work for the

company. Since starting her career in

Sydney, Australia, Renee has had her work

published in magazines like Oyster, Culture

and Hairdresser’s Journal. Now she can add

T e Colorist to her résumé.

➻alessandra marie minardi, h

{WELLA PROFESSIONALS, BETH MINARDI SIGNATURE SHADES AND REDKEN}

has a pedigree most colorists would kill for—her Aunt Beth is none other

than legendary colorist Beth Minardi. “Growing up, we always talked

about fashion, art, books and hair color,” says Allesandra, who is also

inspired by her father, Salvatore Minardi, who owns an eponymous

salon in Madison, New Jersey, where she works. “He taught me to stay

humble because hair color is always evolving.” Her passion for hair color

may come naturally, but Alessandra understands that there is always

something else to learn. “I am intrigued by color formulations and new

methods of application,” she says. “When I color, I don’t go against the

hair, I go with it. I let it speak to me.” Sounds like she’s onto something.

➻sara embry l {AVEDA}is fortunate enough to work at Jackson Ruiz Salon in Austin,

Texas, where her boss is none other than NAHA winner and

Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Styling, Allen Ruiz. While

working at the salon, Sara was a member of the winning NAHA team of 2011, and has

worked onstage at Aveda’s Tuff Love Miami and Aveda

Congress 2013. “Creating art with hair color is my passion,”

she says. “I love helping people feel conf dent and

beautiful with fresh new color.”

➻vanessa orozco k {ARTEASECOLORS} has assisted Gerd Hoher,

president of Arteasecolors, on a number of occasions, and his faith in her has not

been misplaced. “I’ve learned more than I could have imagined from Gerd,” says

Vanessa, who works at Hidden Hairpin in San Pedro, California. The payoff for being a

colorist? “To see how even a small change can make your clients so happy,” she says.

➻ciara ciprianos {KERATIN COMPLEX} is lucky enough to be Deb Gavin’s protégé at Fresh Hair Studio in Southampton, Pennsylvania. “She taught me some of my toughest lessons and has helped me work toward my greatest successes,” she says. Gavin’s best advice? “Once you touch it, you own it,” says Ciara, who plans to combine her college degree and the knowledge she’s gained working behind the chair to elevate the experience of hair color nationwide.

➻amy niles, l

{WELLA PROFESSIONALS, KERATIN COMPLEX} knew she’d be a colorist at Mario Tricoci

in Chicago before she ever started

beauty school. “Painting and artistry

is something that’s been in my family

for generations,” says Amy, who

believes that education is the key

to success. To that end, she now

educates future colorists at Mario

Tricoci in a weekly class setting and

has been certifi ed to educate for Wella

Professionals and Keratin Complex. MEMBER OF

COSMETOLOGISTS

CHICAGO

➻madison loren d {WELLA PROFESSIONALS}

was nominated by Ginger Boyle, who knows a thing or two about f nding and

developing raw talent. “I hire handfuls, and

Madison was a handful at f rst,” says Boyle,

who hired Madison right out of Paul Mitchell The School. “She’s def nitely

been a challenge, but she’s a natural, who has an exciting career ahead

of her.” Case in point: Recently Lisa Shriver-

Brooks, who owns DIVA Studio in Las Vegas,

visited Planet Salon and couldn’t take her eyes

off Madison. Says Boyle, “She has a lot of ability.”

➻rhiannon scwind

d {OYA} came to Blaze

Salon in Coralville, Iowa,

straight out of beauty school.

Right away, her unrelenting

work ethic opened doors for

her, and she began attending

workshops with industry

greats like Geno Stampora

and Candy Shaw Codner.

Having attained master

status, Rhiannon has raised

the bar for all who work for

her, providing the support

they need to achieve their

own goals. T ree days a

week she conducts training

sessions in cut and color,

spending afternoons and

weekends doing what she

loves best: working behind

the chair at the salon where

she follows her passion for

hair color.

➻amber skrzypek k {KEUNE HAIRCOSMETICS} is a

National Studio Artist for Keune Haircosmetics, having joined the company as one of their

regional artists in 2007. In 2012 she became part of Keune’s

National Color Team and began traveling the country teaching color at distributor events and

The Keune Experience and The Keune Evolution. Then in

2013 she traveled to company headquarters in the Netherlands,

where she was named a Keune International 2-Star Educator.

Remember her name. You’ll be hearing it a lot from now on.

➻molly trementek {GOLDWELL} is a colorist at

Plush Hair Studio in Glenville, New York, where she is a Goldwell Color Specialist and Ambassador. “I love

the artistic freedom during the coloring process that allows you to customize formulas and application

techniques to your canvas,” she says. “The possibilities

are endless.” Molly has been lucky enough to work with Goldwell’s John Simpson,

Rebecca Hiele, Nick Pagano and Dimitrios Tsioumas. “They’ve been such an

inspiration to me,” she says.

➻jessica lewis, ;

{MATRIX} is the owner

of Symmetry Hair

Designs in Belleview,

Florida, and names

Matrix Artistic

Director Chrystofer

Benson as one of

her mentors. “His

color is like nothing

you’ve ever seen

before,” she says.

As an educator she

loves watching her

students experience

“aha” moments. “We

have the greatest

career in the world,”

says Jessica, who

was inspired by

something she read

by motivational

speaker Michael

Cole. “He said that

nothing aff ects

a human being’s

mental health more

than their self-

image, and nothing

aff ects a human

being’s self-image

more than their hair.”

I think we can all

agree with that.

➻joey hooten l {AVEDA} works at Van Michael Salon in Atlanta, Georgia. Let’s just say it doesn’t get much better than that. “Like fashion, trends in hair color are constantly being reinvented, and that keeps me inspired and excited for what’s next,” says Joey, who was on the winning team for this year’s NAHA Salon Team of the Year and credits Natalie Gurley at Van Michael Salon with helping her f nd inspiration in less obvious places.

➻becka bradshaw j{REDKEN} is a colorist at Shear Art Salon South in Tampa, Florida, where she enjoys mixing the old or unusual with the new and modern. Recently she assisted Geneva Cowen, Sam Villa’s Artistic Director, at a photo shoot. “As both a colorist and a designer, I have come to realize how every piece has to be f nely tuned to f t a bigger concept,” she says. “Training your eye to see what the camera sees is invaluable.”

➻elle duerr l{MATRIX}

works at Archer Salon in

San Francisco, California,

where her title is Chemistry

Director. “I am a true, to-

the-core Logics pure tone

colorist,” says Elle, who

feels she’s working in light

refl ection rather than color.

A Matrix CRAFT Certifi ed

Color Master, she has

learned a lot from Matrix

artists like Dan Csicsai and

Chrystofer Benson, who

have had a huge infl uence

on the way she works.

➻mary sutcliffel{BROCATO HAIR COLOR,

is grateful to be working for

industry legend Sam Brocato

at his namesake salon in New

York City, where she received

a People’s Choice Award. As an

deep understanding of color

and a power to teach it in a way

that blew my mind,” she says.

Shami as a mentor—

“He’s a brilliant man

who has been very

inspiring to me,”

she says—Shawnee

was asked recently

to join the Creative

“Now I have a

whole other world

to explore and

conquer.”

➻ginette minarik k {REDKEN} works at Headcase Salon in

San Jose, California, where she admits she has a “deep love affair with

hair color.” No wonder. Her go-to hair color gurus are Redken’s Kris Sorbie

and Tracey Cunningham, who have taught her to set lofty goals for herself.

Right now she’s spreading the word about a book she wrote for beauty

school grads called A Cosmo’s Guide to the Industry. You go, girl.

➻alyssa shatek g {OYA}

works her hair color magic at Blaze Color

complicated techniques look simple.”

➻franklin falkowskid {AVEDA} is a talented hair

In her future? “I def nitely see myself doing platform and editorial work,” she says.

The f rst person to teach

her about hair color

was her mother, Cynthia

Cisneroz. “Without having

her as a mentor and a

parent, there is no way

I would be where I am

today,” Rosa says. So

what drives her passion

for color? “Making

someone feel amazing

by changing their hair

color, be it a subtle

change or a complete

transformation.” Now

that’s something

all colorists have in
