Over the Coffee by Rev. Leigh Brownby Rev. Leigh Brownby Rev. Leigh Brownby Rev. Leigh Brown

Ah, summer. As I write this, the weather has been cool and damp for a week, and is predicted to go on this way for another week. But the calendar says it is summer, and worship has moved to 9:30, and folks are practicing their speed in requesting their favorite hymns for hymn sing – the weather is sure to follow! Summer is usually a bit more low-key at Faith. The congregation shrinks on Sun-day morning as Minnesotans head to the lake and to visit family while the weather is good. Sunday School does not meet, choir and bells do not practice, there is no meal or worship on Wednesday evenings. It should be fairly quiet in the church, right? Time for the staff, Susan and I to sit back, meditate and ponder the meaning of life. Wrong! There are exciting things happening for our church this summer! Many of us will gather again with our friends from Nativity and the community to box meals for Feed My Starving Children. Volunteers will once again leave for Kentucky, to help re-build homes as part of Appalachia Service Project. Our church will be filled with youth participating in Servant Heart Ministry, sometimes as many as 60 youth sleeping on floors and eating from our kitchen. As summer ends, we welcome a new tenant in our building on Fridays, Project Home School, and again we will be blessed with children and youth in the building. Our choir room and our bell room will be under con-struction to become one all-purpose music room. Susan and I will work with leadership to create ways to take our church activities and message into the community. With all this happening, things may seem a bit more chaotic than usual, and all things may not be in their usual place, but that is the sign of a church alive! I invite all of us to be a part of what’s happening, to be aware of our feelings and reac-tions, and to allow ourselves to experience them – with open hearts, open minds and open doors. The Spirit lives at Faith Church!

The River of the Water of Life

There is a beautiful vision near the end of the book of Revela-

tion. John hears a voice from the throne, saying “I am the Al-

pha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I

will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life.”

Then, John says, “the angel showed me the river of the water

of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of

the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On ei-

ther side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of

fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.”

    – Revelation 21:6, 22:1-3.

Imagine for a moment that the Mississippi River flows from the throne of God through the middle

of our city. It is a gift from God; water that comes from the spring of the water of life. The waters

themselves are clear and “bright as crystal”. Wherever the water flows it brings life to the land.

Trees grow on either side, producing fruit that is good to eat, and the trees have power to heal

the nations. When I think of the Mississippi in this way, it changes my perception. It becomes

much clearer to me that the river is purely a gift, just as the land itself, and the trees, and the

birds and the people are a gift of God. And the river consists of life-giving water for the thirsty in

body and spirit. It changes my perception of the river from a practical, scientific view to one of de-

    light and praise and thanksgiving.

Faith UMC is in the Mississippi Watershed which means that the storm water draining from our

roof and parking lot ends up in the Mississippi River. This water is not cleaned or filtered before it

enters the river. The storm water picks up sediment, leaves, oil and other fluids that have dripped

from our cars and delivers these to the Mississippi. Water that flows across the grass may pick up

chemicals used to fertilize and kill weeds in our lawn.

Earlier this year I received a phone call from Nick Voss, a MN GreenCorps member who works

with the City of St. Anthony Village. He asked us to consider working with the city and with the

Mississippi Watershed Management Organization to create a rain garden that would help to filter

storm water leaving our property before it enters the storm drain. This would be one way we

could help prevent pollution from entering the river, and help maintain the life-giving qualities of

the water. It would also help us to connect with the city and neighborhood.

I am excited about this project. It is a small enough project that we can do it without becoming

overwhelmed. It’s an opportunity to care for creation here in our neighborhood, and educate our-

selves and our neighbors in the process. It is one way that we can live toward that vision of the

New Jerusalem – a vision that is meant to help us see our world with new eyes. “See, the home of

God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be

    with them.” Amen!

Celebrating Marie's 20 years of service at Faith Church ~ by Jo Halvorsen

Marie, thank you for 20 years of beautiful music!

I know you all have a special memory of her: organist, card giver, concerned friend, good listener, and there with a laugh or a prayer.

For me, Marie and I have a special relationship. She seems to be able to read my mind during rehearsals. If I want to go back and work on a section, she "rolls the pitches" for the choir even before I tell the choir where I want to begin. She notices things that need to happen or change before I do. And when we celebrate choir birthdays she plays a D7 chord to start "Happy Birthday" just when I think of it or, more often, before.

Have you noticed the Prelude and Postlude notes? She remembers the favorites of many of you and puts your name in the bulletin. She has often said "This is for John". When our youth want to play for the Pre-lude, Marie works with them to make them comfortable and ready.

I am sure you and I all know how wonderful she is and appreciate her hard work and dedicated service to the choir and Faith Church!

    Faith in Action

Congratulations to Denise Wells, the 2013 Minneapolis Volunteer of the year for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans!

We are so proud to announce that Faith Church's own Denise Wells was recently chosen by her employer as 2013 Employee Volunteer of the Year. She was cho-sen (along with one other employee) from an impressive group of volunteers who exemplify "living The Thrivent Way." Not only does she live a balanced and generous life, but she also inspires family, friends and coworkers to do so as well.

Denise began her life as a volunteer in college, working on a number of projects with her sorority. After college she volunteered for the Minnesota Historical Soci-ety, but it wasn’t until she went to work at Thrivent that she branched out as a volunteer. She credits the culture at Thrivent and Volunteer Time Off (VTO) with

helping her expand her area of influence as a volunteer.

"A Thrivent Builds" trip to Guatemala in 2010 was the launching point for a great relationship with Children of Lake Atitlan, an organization whose mission is to is to support the education of children in the commu-nities around Lake Atitlan, located in Southwest Guatemala. Denise returned in 2012 with a group includ-ing other Thrivent employees, transforming their school from drab grey to bright blue. They also brought school supplies and an overhead projector Denise bought from the Green Store to help the children learn.

Denise has a passion for history, and she has transformed that passion into a very popular volunteer event at Thrivent. As a new member of the Employee Volunteer Team (EVT), she jumped right in and recruited 25 Minneapolis and Appleton employees to volunteer as judges for Minnesota State Historical Society His-tory Day contests, resulting in more than 250 volunteer hours in that year alone. Her enthusiasm has re-sulted in expansion of the program for 2013.

Project Warm Hearts/Get Stitchy was a good volunteer project in Minneapolis when Denise agreed to take responsibility for it. Once again, she put her special brand of enthusiasm to work and turned it from a "good" event into a "great" event! Rather than monthly meetings for several hours, the Get Stitchy group in Minneapolis now meets weekly during the lunch hour. Denise handles all of the details from purchasing yarn to locating storage space (reusing old red plastic inboxes from Thrivent by using them to organize squares by color) and delivering blankets. Participation has doubled, and output from this group is amaz-ing. 157 blankets were donated to Project Linus in 2012.

How does she find time to volunteer? She rarely watches TV, and her family incorporates volunteering into their lives more each year. What advice would she give to others who are just starting as volunteers? “Find something that really interests you to start with, and then as you get into it more you can expand your base of volunteerism.”

Denise says, “I love working for an organization that has such a strong history of volunteerism! It is amazing to people when I tell them that my employer will give me time off to go do volunteer work every year and I can choose the activity! As a result, I try to pay back by doing as many types of volunteer work/activities as possible.”

As part of this honor, Denise will receive $5,000 to be donated in her honor to donate to the non-profits of her choice. She is splitting the money between groups that she has volunteered with this past year. They include the above mentioned: Children of Lake Atitlan, Ramsey County Historical Society, MN Historical Society and Project Linus. We are so proud that Denise is a part of our Faith Family, and we congratulate her on this wonderful honor!

Feed My Starving Children Mobile Pack Event St. Anthony Village High School Wednesday, June 26 6:00-8:00 PM Minimum age for volunteers is 5 years

Come and show your community spirit and do something that saves children’s lives! We are participating along with other churches, civic organizations and businesses in St. Anthony Village in a mobile pack event for Feed My Starving Children. This is an opportunity to learn about hunger related issues, pray for those in need, raise funds to cover the cost of meals and pack meals for the hungry. Through this powerful event, we can impact the lives of thousands of children. There are two ways that you can participate.

Packing Meals: Please sign up in the Commons if you would like to participate by helping pack food at St. An-thony Village High School on Wednesday, June 26 from 6:00-8:00 PM. The minimum age for volunteers is 5 years old. Other packing times are available on June 25-26. You can sign up for a different packing time online at www.fmsc.org (click on mobile pack, select mobile pack events, scroll down to St. Anthony in Minnesota, and click on “Get Involved.”)

Donations: On average, each person participating in the mobile pack event will pack 216 meals, at a cost of $50. We would like to raise the funds necessary to purchase the food that we will be packing. If you would like to do-nate, please make out a check to “Faith UMC” and put “Feed My Starving Children” on the memo line.

Feed My Starving Children is a non-profit Christian organization committed to feeding God’s children hungry in body and spirit. The approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals specifically formulated for mal-nourished children, and we ship the meals to nearly 70 countries around the world.

Summer is here! On the first Sunday of the summer months, the children are invited to join Susan Mullin for kid-friendly activities during worship (9:30-10:30). We will meet upstairs in the Commons (not in the Sunday school rooms). This summer our theme is “Lost.” On June 2, we will explore the parables of the lost coin and the lost sheep. All children are welcome to join us as we learn about the Bible stories through art, games, and drama.

    What about the Other Sundays?

Children are always welcome in wor-ship, and summer is a great time to wor-ship as a family in a relaxed atmosphere. Try out one of the worship activity bags located on the stand near the entrance to the sanctu-ary (on the left side before you enter the sanctuary). We will be changing the contents of the bags from time to time, so come see what’s new! You are also welcome to bring snacks into the sanctu-ary for your children (and for you). “Allow the children to come to me,” Je-sus said. “Don’t forbid them, because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people like these children.” (Matthew 19:14-15)
