Quotes for Reflection
“Sentimentality is that peculiarly human vice which consists in directing your emotions toward your ownemotions, so as to be the subject of a story told by yourself.”—Roger Scruton
“Sentimentality is a self-referential emotion. It is a turning of the feelings back on themselves, feeling aboutyour feeling. This means that people in the grip of sentimentality who think they are in love may actuallynot so much love another person, as love their own emotions about that other person.”—Dick Keyes
“Love is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art. It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things thatgive value to survival.”—C.S. Lewis
GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO WORSHIP
It is God Himself who calls His people to worship. We do not call ourselves, but it is the King who opens His gatesand beckons us into his courts.
Prelude
Introit—Holy is the Lord
Text & Music: Nathan Clark George, 2010
Call to Worship—Isaiah 61: 8-11
Pastor: Rejoice. Rejoice greatly in the LORD;
All: Our souls will exult in the Lord our God.
Reader 1: The Lord has clothed us with the garments of salvation; He has covered us with the robes of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as abride adorns herself with her jewels.
Reader 2: For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up,so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations.
All: For the Lord loves justice. He will faithfully make an everlasting covenantwith His beloved people.
Pastor: We will rejoice for we are the offspring the Lord has blessed.

Scripture Song for May—To Live Is Christ
Text & Music: Nathan Clark George; Text: Based on Philippians 1:19-25
Scripture Reading—Galatians 5: 1, 13-14, 16, 22-25
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke ofslavery. For you were called to freedom, beloved. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for theflesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love yourneighbor as yourself.” So, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. The fruit othe Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; againstsuch things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passionsand desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Elder: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Text: Vs 1-4, Isaac Watts, 1707; Vs 5, Thomas Ken, 1674; Music: TALLIS CANON, Thomas Tallis, 1560.
Sacrament of Baptism (Second Service)
Emerson Claire Boyd & Rowan Charles Boyd, Daughter & Son of Greg & Ashlee
Covenant baptism is instituted by the Lord Jesus as a sign and seal of the covenant of His grace—and thus of the promiseof our ingrafting to Him, of our union with Him, of our adoption by Him, and our regeneration in Him. This is awonderful promise made to believers and their children—thus showing us that every member of the covenant community is
given access to His means of grace in the visible Church. As a result, all of us who are present at a baptismal service oughtto look back to our own baptism—to repent of our sins, to stir up our faith, and to grow in our callings together. Just aevery worship service is a call to covenant renewal, every baptism is a call to revive our obedience , our accountability, and our love for Jesus.
“For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord ourGod shall call unto him. ‘And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your seed after you throughouttheir generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto you and to your seed after you.’ Therefore, believe onthe Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your house.” (Acts 2:39; Gen. 17:7; Acts 16:31)
1. Greg and Ashlee, do you acknowledge your own, as well as Emerson's & Rowan's, need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ and the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit?2. Do you claim God’s covenant promises for them, and do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus—and only to the Lord
Jesus—for their salvation, just as you do for your own?3. Do you now consecrate Emerson and Rowan to God; will you in humble reliance upon His sovereign grace setbefore them a godly example—praying with and for them, teaching them the good hope of the Gospel, opening tothem the truth of the Scriptures, and striving by every means of grace God provides, to bring them up in the nurtureand admonition of the Lord?
Will you as a covenant community joyously commit to assisting the Boyd family in the good work of discipleshipand the Christian nurture of their daughter & son?
The Reading of the Word—Philippians 1:9-11
And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so thatyou may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruitof righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Sung Response—A Debt of Love We Owe
Text & Music: DEBT OF LOVE, based on Romans 13 & 14, Nathan C. George 2011
Sermon—God Finishes What He Starts —Pastor, George Grant
GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO CONFESSION, REPENTANCE, AND RECONCILIATION The People of God respond to His Word by confessing their sins, repenting of their sinful ways, and seeking God’s favor through the reconciling work of Jesus, the Son of God.
Confession of Sin—Ephesians 4: 30-5:5
Pastor: O Lord, we come confessing. We confess that time after time we have grievedthe Holy Spirit of God.
All: It was by Him that we were sealed for the day of redemption.
Pastor: But we have not put off all our petty bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slanderand malice. We have often failed to show forth the kindness and tenderness of the Spirit.
All: Though God in Christ has forgiven us, we do not always forgive one another.
Pastor: Yet, we have been called to be imitators of God, as beloved children. And we are to walk in love,as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
All: The fruits of the flesh, the sins of the world, immorality, impurity, filthiness, and foolishness ought not even be named among us.
Pastor: We may be sure of this, those who persist in such things have no inheritancein the kingdom of Christ and God.

Assurance of Pardon: Romans 8:1-3, 12, 14-17
Hear now the Gospel: there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of theSpirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the lawweakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, hecondemned sin in the flesh. So then, beloved, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the fleshFor all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to falback into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

HEAVENLY GIFT — EUCHARISTO As God beckons His people to the bounty of His table, they make joyous profession of their fealty to Him.
Profession of Faith—The Apostles’ Creed
We believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth,
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate,Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.He ascended into Heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Spirit; The one holy Church—both visible and invisible; The communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
Pastor: The Lord be with you.People: And also with you.
Pastor: Lift up your hearts.People: We lift them up to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.Pastor: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father

Please come forward to partake of this means of grace. You may take the bread and dip it either in the cup ofwine or grape juice. Elders and their wives are available for prayer in the front after communion.
Song of Reflection—Nothing But the Blood
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus; What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
RefrainOh! precious is the flow that makes me white as snow;No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
For my pardon, this I see, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; For my cleansing this my plea, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. (Refrain)
This is all my hope and peace, Nothing but the blood of Jesus; This is all my righteousness, Nothing but the blood of Jesus. (Refrain)

Resources for Family WorshipNext Sunday’s Sermon— Philippians 1:12-18, the next passage in our ongoing study of Paul’s little postcardepistle to the first century church at Philippi.
Westminster Larger Catechism:Q. 182. How doth the Spirit help us to pray? A. We not knowing what to pray for as we ought, the Spirit
helpeth our infirmities, by enabling us to understand both for whom, and what, and how prayer is to bemade; and by working and quickening in our hearts (although not in all persons, nor at all times, in the samemeasure) those apprehensions, affections, and graces which are requisite for the right performance of thatduty.Q. 183. For whom are we to pray? A. We are to pray for the whole church of Christ upon earth; formagistrates, and ministers; for ourselves, our brethren, yea, our enemies; and for all sorts of men living, orthat shall live hereafter; but not for the dead, nor for those that are known to have sinned the sin unto death.Q. 184. For what things are we to pray? A. We are to pray for all things tending to the glory of God, thewelfare of the church, our own or others' good; but not for anything that is unlawful.Q. 185. How are we to pray? A. We are to pray with an awful apprehension of the majesty of God, and deepsense of our own unworthiness, necessities, and sins; with penitent, thankful, and enlarged hearts; withunderstanding, faith, sincerity, fervency, love, and perseverance, waiting upon him, with humble
submission to his will.
