Both men chuckled as Kasell recalled the time British jour- nalist and TV host Alistair Cooke quoted a young girl who said, ‘‘I like radio more than television because the pictures are better.’’ Watch out, little lady. I don’t consider myself a Luddite, even though I don’t own an iPhone and don’t plan on getting one until the next time Halley’s Comet comes around. (Yeah, I know — you iPhone/BlackBerry folks can access that date instantly, while people like me will have to look it up in some musty, Gutenberg-spawned almanac.) But I confess I cringed when, the same week I heard those radio elders reminiscing about the good ol’ days, I read about the Vook. The Vook? It’s an electronic, computer- generated video/book hybrid (produced in part by venerat- ed, Gutenberg-style publisher Simon & Schuster). Whether accessed by com- puter or mobile thingy, a Vook (and similar data globs that have been variously dubbed v- books, digibooks or multime- dia books) come with links and embedded video so that you can, well, see a character or action instead of pestering that poor ol’ overworked imagina- tion of yours. True, current v- books also provide links to Wi- kipedia and other encyclopedic sources, thus backing up imag- inative text with merely ex- planatory text. In an article on the Vook by Monica Hesse of The Washing- ton Post, the founder of the In- stitute for the Future of the Book was quoted (yes, there is such a thing). ‘‘The age of pure linear con- tent is going to pass with the rise of digital network con- tent,’’ said the institute’s Bob Stein. ‘‘Things like the Vook are trivial. We’re going to see an explosion of experimenta- tion before we see a dominant new format. We’re at the very, very beginning.’’ As for myself, I’m like that little girl: I’m going to like Gu- tenberg-ish books better than digibooks because I’m certain the pictures will be better. In other Web 2.0 news . . . Some of us Gutenbergs still enjoy browsing in old-fashion- ed, brick-and-mortar book and record stores because, while we may be scouting for a book on sitar player Ravi Shankar, we may stumble upon, say, ‘‘Karma Cola: Marketing the Mystic East’’ by Gita Mehta. Such an experience is only fleetingly replicated online by Amazon’s ‘‘recommendations’’ and ‘‘customers who bought this item also bought . . .’’ fea- tures. But stumbling through the Web does have its pleasures. When I was searching for the band Rock Sugar recently, Am- azon mistakenly took me to ‘‘Sugar in My Bowl: Vintage Sex Songs 1923-1952,’’ which in turn led to a whole slew of ‘‘rude blues’’ compilations in the ‘‘customers who bought this item also bought . . .’’ list. On such albums as ‘‘Let Me Squeeze Your Lemon: The Ulti- mate Rude Blues Collection’’ and ‘‘Eat to the Beat — The Dirtiest of Them Dirty Blues,’’ the offerings range from the innuendo-drenched and merely naughty, such as Tampa Red’s ‘‘She Want to Sell My Mon- key,’’ to slang-infested ditties that would make Richard Pryor blush. Along with lesser-knowns such as Sippie Wallace and Boozoo Chavis, these sets also feature such name brands as Dinah Washington and Screa- min’ Jay Hawkins. No, you likely won’t find these collections in any big-box chain store. Hey, maybe I can get used to a post-Gutenberg universe af- ter all. Rick de Yampert is The Day- tona Beach News-Journal’s en- tertainment writer. He can be reached at rick.deyampert @news-jrnl.com B efore playing Father Jack Landry on ABC’s ‘‘V,’’ returning Tues- day night at 10, Joel Gretsch was hunting aliens as agent Tom Baldwin on USA’s ‘‘The 4400.’’ And then there was his role in USA’s ‘‘Taken’’ which involved, oh, aliens. Are you catching a theme here? So what does Gretsch do when he’s not trying to un- cover some sort of evil plot hatched by reptilian beings from another planet? He stops by to chat with Fan- boy, of course. Q. First off, congrats on ‘‘V.’’ The ratings have been great and people seem to love it. What drew you to it? Oh man, we’re having such a fun time doing it. It was a great script. I read the pilot and it was really . . . I dun- no . . . often you get a lot of scripts and some flow with you and some don’t. This one was a nice read and it was very compelling to me. And also I knew that (‘‘The 4400’’ creator and writer) Scott Pet- ers was involved. So it had a lot of great stuff going for it. Q. So who is Father Jack? He’s a Catholic priest. He’s a man of faith. He’s a good man. I saw him as a guy who be- came a priest for all the right reasons. He really wants to make a difference with people. He’s complex. There’s more than meets the eye with Fa- ther Jack. And now with the V showing up, that’s the part that gets exploited. It changes all of us. Q. The father Jack story line is my favorite of the se- ries. You have this man of faith thrown into such an un- certain situation. He sees the good in everyone but in this reality it’s the old ‘‘X-Files’’ mantra of ‘‘Trust No One.’’ That’s fantastic. (Laughs) Well said. You have that man of faith and when that changes, ya know, in the pilot I say, ‘‘This wasn’t in the Scriptures.’’ In the end of the pilot when I’m sitting there with Elizabeth’s (Mitchell) character on a rooftop, these two unlikely partners, right now, at this particular mo- ment, there is no one else we can trust. Q. You mentioned Eliza- beth Mitchell and I’m a huge ‘‘Lost’’ fan as well. How is she to work with and how do you see the relationship be- tween your priest and her fed- eral agent developing? It’s hard not to gush about Elizabeth. Even my wife is like, ‘‘Whoa, slow down a little bit.’’ She is the consummate professional and the kind of actress everybody dreams to work with. She’s the total package. As for our charac- ters, Scott Peters said to me a while ago, ‘‘Jack’s a priest but he’s also a man.’’ That’s a part of all of us that you can’t ne- gate. I mean it’s not like there is any romantic feelings there but who knows what’s under- neath. Because of the circum- stances, it’s made things very intimate and that’s a great thing to play off of. Q. Do you actually believe in aliens? I’ve said this before, but in the movie ‘‘Contact’’ with Jo- die Foster where she says it would be an incredible waste of space, that’s how I feel. Boy, it’s narcissistic to think that we’re the only ones so why not? Q. I loved the ‘‘The 4400.’’ I’ve read a few places that compared it to ‘‘V’’ in the sense that Father Jack and Erica Evans equates to Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris and the uncertainty of who to trust. Sure, I’ll go with that. Why not? I think there is . . . uh . . . yeah. Yeah. How’s that for an answer? Q. So Father Jack or Tom Baldwin, who’s the bigger tough guy? I think Father Jack’s gonna surprise you. Q. Speaking of Father Jack, last we saw him he was in a pretty bad way. As we get ready to pick back up, what can we expect from Fa- ther Jack and the resistance in the future? I think there is that big thing about the fact that Fa- ther Jack was stabbed. Some- thing is gonna happen that I think will interest the fans about how he comes back. That changes you, ya know? His life was almost taken away. The resistance becomes more important to him. Time becomes more important. Ev- erything becomes more valu- able. Father Jack is not sitting around. At any moment, there are things that are happening that he has to do now. And, uh, yeah. I can’t really give much more away. For more with Joel Gretsch, check out go386.com/fanboy.
