Dear Families, It is so rewarding to work in a school with such a strong school-family partnership. I spent the snow day reading all of the recent report cards. It was clear that teachers know their students well, strive to recognize their unique talents, and push students to meet new goals. Take the report card as an opportunity to celebrate successes. I know parents will reinforce the message hard work pays off and the importance of setting high standards for learning and behavior. When students see us working together, it elevates the importance of school. You will find a short survey regarding parent teacher conferences attached. As a faculty, we want to make sure that the timing and content of these meetings help you help your children to achieve at high levels. Happy Holidays! Lisa Demick Parent Teacher Conference Survey

Have a wonderful winter break!

Specialist Edition - STEMIn STEM we focus on 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking as we engineer solutions to problems. We began this trimester covering routines and common practices. Then we learned about teamwork and put into practice skills like sharing, problem solving, making sure everyone participates in a group, communication skills, and taking turns so that our teamwork can be successful. First through fifth graders learned the importance of tracking data during experiments. We’ve designed a few different types of bridges, tested the strength of paper, rescued witches from cauldrons, sent spiders flying across the room, written code, designed pulleys and mazes, engineered towers, and conducted tests to compare data.

Nurses NotesFrom the School Nurse

Over the past few weeks, we have seen flu-like illness, along with cases of other respiratory illness, strep, gastrointestinal illness, etc.The attached information poster, Is it a COLD or the FLU?, may be helpful to answer your questions and reduce the risk of spreading the flu. It is not too late to get a Flu vaccine. If you suspect your child has symptoms of the flu, contact your physician for possible early treatment.

KEEP YOUR CHILD HOME until:

● fever-free for 24 hours (Temp <100 without fever reducing medication)

● acute symptoms have subsided for 24 hours (disruptive / persistent cough, vomiting, diarrhea, etc)

● able to participate in a school workday

PREVENTION ROUTINE:

● COVER A COUGH/SNEEZE with a tissue or by coughing into your ● sleeve/elbow instead of your hands.

● HANDWASHING! Use soap & water for 15-20 seconds and dry

● Do not share personal items

● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth which will spread germs

● Remember sleep, good nutrition and exercise will help prevent illness

I will be teaching PES students about handwashing and illness prevention this month. Please look for

handouts sent home and ask your child what they learned from the School Nurse about staying healthy!

Winter has arrived! Please make sure your child is dressed in their cold weather gear.

We usually go outside unless it’s under 10 degrees.

Do you have snowgear your child has outgrown?

With the cold weather and snow coming early this year, we are on the lookout for gently

used winter gear donations. Specifically, we are in need of regular pants, boots,

waterproof gloves.

Thank you for thinking of us as you clean out your closets!

Amazon Smile

Attention Amazon shoppers! Don't forget that if you shop through Amazon Smile, Amazon will make a donation to Impact for every purchase you make. It's surprising how much it can add up. There is a link to Amazon Smile under the "parents" menu on the PES website. Or go to smile.amazon.com and search for "Pownal Elementary School" to choose Impact as your charity.

Snack Donations

We are in need of healthy snack donations In the nurse’s office. Items such as cheese sticks,

saltine crackers or applesauce are appreciated! Thank you for supporting our students!
