Evron the boy-warrior

Storm clouds gathered in the distance, shrouding the purple-heathermountains, which loomed over the island, bringing with them a sense offoreboding. Feeling uneasy, Evron turned his eyes away from the gloomyscene and looked west towards to the sea and its endless horizon. It wouldnot be long before the gentle waves that swooshed at Evron’s feet werewhipped into frenzy by the forthcoming storm. Time and daylight wererunning out; he turned his eyes to the shoreline and scanned for driftwoodor anything else that he could take back to father. His hessian sack wasnearly full yet there was room for a few more pieces - anything that wouldkeep the family warm during the tempest which was fast approaching.

Hauling his heavy firewood-sack over his shoulder, he was about to move onwhen a movement, far away, caught his eye: a boat, heading towards theisland. He watched as the ocean-steed galloped across the waves, so fast itshull scarcely touched the water. Embellished cloth upon a mast, oars and whatappeared to be a dragon at the bow. A dragon? This was no neighbourlyfishing boat back from a successful trip. This was dread and evil and it wassailing straight towards Evron.

“Vikings! On the sea - Vikings!” Evron scrambled towards his home. At the topof the hill he saw his father, staring out at the oncoming terror - he had seenthem too. Tall and rugged with wild red hair and a bearded face, his fatherdid not move from his vantage point.“Find your mother and run for a hiding place within the rocks. Quickly -before they reach the shore.” In all his twelve years, Evron had never beforeheard fear in his father’s voice, nor ever been told to hide from danger.“But Father…”“Run! Go now! I will follow.”

Task- write the ending to your Viking story

His mother was ready: the fire had been doused, scraps of food - fishand some bread - hastily bundled together with a flask of ale and theshutters closed. Evron knew the coastline well; he knew which cavewould offer them sanctuary. His mother seemed to know his mind forthey set off together and did not speak a word. They ran, as one, downtowards the path of ships, crouching low behind the rocks for fear ofbeing seen by the approaching bloody-speared warriors.

How long they crouched in the damp, shivering with fear and cold,Evron did not know. As his mother sat quietly by his side, murmuringprayers to Odin, he listened for any clue that it was safe to emerge. Finally, as soft light began to enter the cave and the sound of gullsfilled the air, he heard what he was waiting for: men’s voices shoutingand chanting as they rowed back out to sea. The voices grew dimmer, then there was silence. He waited. When he could wait no more, Evronslowly emerged from his dark hiding place.Amongst the smouldering ashes that remained of his home, he stumbledupon his father’s sword, Ljóma ógnir (the light of terror). As the firststars heralded the night, the young warrior stood on his father’svantage point overlooking the sea. Pointing the deadly blade towards theheavens, he vowed his revenge.

What are we going to write about next? The ending!

Harry jumped back on his Nimbus Two Thousand and took off. Gliding silently over the castle he saw Snape enter the forest at a run. He followed. The trees were so thick he couldn't see where Snape had gone. He flew in circles, lower and lower, brushing the top branches of trees until he heard voices. He glided toward them and landed noiselessly in a towering beech tree.

He climbed carefully along one of the branches, holding tight to his broomstick, trying to see through the leaves.Below, in a shadowy clearing, stood Snape, but he wasn't alone. Quirrell was there, too. Harry couldn't make out the look on his face, but he was stuttering worse than ever. Harry strained to catch what they were saying.

"... d-don't know why you wanted t-t-to meet here of all p-places, Severus...""Oh, I thought we'd keep this private," said Snape, his voice icy. "Students aren't supposed to know about the Sorcerer's Stone, after all."Harry leaned forward. Quirrell was mumbling something. Snape interrupted him."Have you found out how to get past that beast of Hagrid's yet?""B-b-but Severus, I--""You don't want me as your enemy, Quirrell," said Snape, taking a step toward him."I-I don't know what you--""You know perfectly well what I mean."An owl hooted loudly, and Harry nearly fell out of the tree. He steadied himself in time to hear Snape say, " -- your little bit of hocus-pocus. I'm waiting.""B-but I d-d-don't--""Very well," Snape cut in. "We'll have another little chat soon, when you've had time to think things over and decided where your loyalties lie."He threw his cloak over his head and strode out of the clearing. It was almost dark now, but Harry could see Quirrell, standing quite still as though he was petrified.

Viking shield- task 1What is a Viking ShieldA Viking shield is different from the typical shield encountered in history for a few reasons. One of them is that they were round and wooden shields that had a grip handle at the back made from an iron boss. These shields also date back to the Iron Age. The shields found during this time were not all the same; there were variations that we shall discuss below. They also had multiple uses that we’ll explore to give you the complete picture when it comes to Viking shields.

Task- design and make your own Viking shieldUse a carboard box, cereal box or anything you can find.
