Book Synopsis
King Solomon Mines was written in 1885 by H. Rider Haggard. It is said to be the first in the
genre of adventure stories, to be set in Africa. It tell the story of English wildlife hunter Allan
Quartermaine, as he sets out to discover the fate of a missing brother of a companion, the
wealthy sir Henry Curtis. On the trail, Quartermaine gets hold of a map giving the location of
the fabled king Solomon's mines and decides to accompany a team of people to search out the
mines for a cut of the treasure. He meets a regal African man who accompanies them, and
who turns out to be the lost son and heir of the kingdom where Solomon's mine is located.
After a supporting the king to regain his throne, they are granted permission to enter the mine
in hope of finding their treasure. The main supporter of the deposed false king, a strange
witch like woman called Gagool, assists the men and an African woman who has become
close to one of the Englishman, into the cave and through a secret door which only she can
operate. They eventually find the room filled with gold, ivory tusks, and the diamonds they
were looking for, but Gagool decides to leave them to die, and makes a run for the secret
door , killing the woman in the process. Gagool herself is crushed to death, and the explorers
are left with all the riches they could dream of, to die.
At the time the book was written, ancient sites were something white adventurers on the
African continent were actively seeking to plunder for their lucrative finds. Haggard had
travelled throughout the continent extensively and had many first hand accounts of the
geography, the local people, wildlife and colonialistion by white Europeans.
The story has a number themes some of which are greed and british imperialism and
colonisation. At the time, Victorian Britain was considered the most technologically advanced
nation in the world, and also the richest, having an empire that stretched every continent. The
empire regularly plundered the resources from other nations. In king Solomon's mines, the
explorers get the riches they wanted by working with the African king whom they had helped,
but also risk losing their lives, as the cost of putting one ruler on the throne, resulted in the
loyal Gagool, seeking revenge. Her revenge is for them to be entombed along with the dead
kings of her tribespeople, who reside as calcium statues because of the dripping stagalite
water which drips continuously over their dead bodies.

Visual Concept
I have chosen to make all three of my scenes have varied colour palettes: So, Scene1 will have a reddish theme, filled with rock and dusty textures. I have looked atvarious statues, and environments set in desert areas, such as Petra in Jordan.Scene 2 will have a mixture of clean cathedral designs, and also cave like areas, which will make for some interesting mixture of colours. Scene 3 will be much
darker, I will be using lots of stone textures, and i will use a more blue tone in this
final image.
I will have different lighting also, for each scene. Scene 3 will be the mostatmospheric, as in my excerpt, the room is lit by a single dimly lit candle.
For my first image, Im looking at extreme perspective shots, to emphasise the sizeof the statues. For my second image, i want to create angles which showcase the
beauty of the cathedral-like building. For my second image, i want to be able to getacross the feeling of being trapped in the room, so i will play around with as many
angles as i can.
