BackgroundBeyond the Panda was created in 2013 and is continuing to evolve each year to fulfil our RZSS UK/China Giant Panda Education Programme. “The key objectives are to promote the knowledge and awareness of giant pandas, their biology, habitat and conservation; biodiversity in China and the importance of China in ecological and conservation terms; the culture, language and people of China.” “The UK/China Giant Panda agreement is for a period ten years [2011-2021] and the education programme and activities will be developed, enacted, delivered, evaluated and further developed throughout this whole period.” (Giant Panda Project Strategy & Plan for Educational Development and Activity, May 2012).Beyond the Panda is an education programme designed to widen access and participation.

Our Partners & SponsorsBeyond the Panda works with partners Confucius Institute for Scotland, Scotland China Education Network and the Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools.

The Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh provides the main sponsorship for the programme.

The Scotland China Education Network (SCEN) continues to provide support for the programme through its extensive network. SCEN has also provided funding this year for an East Lothian school to take part in the programme with SCEN’s East Lothian Mandarin Project.

Working with the Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools at the University of Strathclyde enables us to link closely with the Confucius Hub schools in Scotland and to the teaching of Mandarin in the Scottish curriculum.

Arnold Clark continues to provide sponsorship with the donation of a wrapped vehicle for the Beyond the Panda outreach sessions.

SummaryIn the school year 2016-2017, Beyond the Panda has delivered 205 sessions engaging with 4,484 children and 652 adults. The number of sessions compared to last school year has significantly increased from 183 to 205. Although sessions have increased, the programme has reached more remote areas and delivered to smaller class sizes, therefore numbers of children have fallen by 435 from 4,919 to 4,484. For example, the visits to Shetland Islands and Argyll. In addition to above figures, Beyond the Panda took part in the Edinburgh International Science Festival over a 3 day period and engaged with a further 2,348 people. Therefore overall there has been a significant increase in engagement this year.

Significant developments in the 2016-2017 school year:

• Re-organised the structure of the Beyond the Panda education programme

The Beyond the Panda education programme offers: 1. China Mobile Library – A loan of a unique set of interactive activities, jigsaws and games to

schools for a minimum of one week followed with an expert visit by an Education Officer. We term the set of resources as our ‘panda boxes’. Providing the loan of these materials empowers the teachers to utilise the materials to their full advantage. During the expert visit which follows approximately a week later, a game is played with the pupils to consolidate the learning and provide some evaluation of the effectiveness of the panda box. The extended loan period was started in September 2016, however in April 2017, we piloted a new style panda box with additional materials. With the Confucius Institute for Scotland funding in 2017-2018 we will add the additional materials to the four current Primary 4 to Primary 7 level panda boxes and also increase the number of boxes to five. Furthermore, we will develop five Primary 1 to Primary 3 level boxes.

2. Outreach Sessions – These are Education Officer led outreach visits on the topic of Chinese endangered species and look closely at four different species and four main threats. A new endangered game for upper primary level was introduced in January 2017. In 2017-2018, a similar game based around habitats will be developed for the lower primary age level.

3. Secondary Endangered Species Package – A Chinese endangered species board game with case study material for students studying Mandarin at qualification level.

4. Events & Youth Group visits – Beyond the Panda also continues to visit youth groups and take part in various public engagement events, talks and presentations.

• Delivered the first Beyond the Panda session in England

The first Beyond the Panda outreach session in England was delivered to Stead Lane School in Northumberland in January 2017. There hasn’t been a large uptake of the programme south of the border but this is mainly due to lack of advertising the programme for English schools. Beyond the Panda was also fully booked this year leaving no opportunity for any other schools to participate. We plan to leave the offer open to north of England schools and do have a programme and leaflet linked to the English National Curriculum for their reference.

• Launched Panda Pass It On

Panda Pass It On is a fun introductory board game for schools, youth groups and the general public to play and learn about giant pandas, China and the Chinese language. Initially the game was launched in January 2017 and only open to schools. Four hard copy board games were distributed in four corners of Scotland but we very soon found that our tracking system which relied on the schools to scan a QR code and enter their details was not sufficient for us to keep track of the games. We are unsure how many schools are participating and where our board games are! In April 2017, we re-launched with minor amendments to the game board which opened the opportunity up to youth groups and families. Four copies were sent to youth groups but we also advertised to others to download their own copy. Tracking is still dependent on the users entering their details so inevitably we will not see the full extent of where the game travels. However, we do know that eight copies of the game are out there with many more digital downloads and can only hope people are learning more about giant pandas, China and the Chinese language with this fun initiative. Panda Pass It On game can be downloaded from -rzss.org.uk/rzss-education/rzss-panda-pass-it-on

• The Beyond the Panda Model

Beyond the Panda has now become a model programme for linking language learning to science. Due to the success of Beyond the Panda and with the programme now a recognised Mandarin language learning resource, we have created a new programme entitled ‘Science in the Language Class’. The aim is to produce resources which will link language learning to our conservation projects across the world or to the conservation breeding programmes within our zoos. The resource designs are based on the Beyond the Panda model but using different animals and languages.

My cubs (and Young Leaders and ‘old’ Leaders) learned a good deal about the plight of the panda and what is being done to protect them, it certainly made for an interesting and educational evening. The content can be adapted to make it suitable for Beavers, Cubs or Scouts.”

• Number of sessions significantly increased. • Some smaller class sizes and visits to remote areas resulted in reduction in numbers of children.

It was a main aim this year for Beyond the Panda to reach more remote areas. • Participation in the Edinburgh International Science Festival resulted in a large number of

engagements with the public. These figures are in addition to the children and adult figures.
