Fertilization

• The panda reproduces sexually

• The panda carries it’s babies in it’s womb so it’s internal

• The panda has a delay before the embryo implantation (before it becomes pregnant)

Offspring

• Normally has 2 offspring

• The cubs are usually 5 oz.

Incubation Period

• Lasts 4-5 months• Reproduces every 2

years

Mating Rituals• The females will use

scent-marking (rubbing bums against trees and rocks) to attract mates

• Male pandas will compete for the female

• The female only wants to have a baby for 2-5 days so the male will have to wait to “make his move”

Maturity• The female panda

reaches maturity between the ages of 4-10 years

• But will only be able to mate 12-25 days in between mid-March and mid-May

Parenting• The males leave after

mating• The mother will only

mother one of her two cubs the other she will abandon

• Carries cub everywhere for the first few weeks

• The cub will stay with the mother for 18 months

Life Span

• In the zoo panda’s live to about 30 years

• In the wild they live to an estimated less than 20 years!

Habitat• Mainly in these

Chinese Provinces:• The south of Gansu

Province• Sichuan Province

mountains• Qin Ling Mountains of

Shaanxi Province• As well as zoos and

nature reserves Red parts are where pandas live

Interesting Facts!• A grown panda will

need to eat 28 lbs. of bamboo before it is full

•The panda is listed in the endangered species list the are approximately 1,590 pandas left in the wild due to loss of habitat.
