F.T. Wimble & Co were the manufacturers of the first printing ink produced in the Southern hemisphere (Melbourne, 1868).

In addition to printing ink manufacture, type founding and electrotyping, Wimble's were the Australian representatives of

many overseas manufacturers of printing machinery and accessories.

Frederick Thomas Wimble (1846-1936) was the son of Benjamin Wimble of Cambridge and grandson of Thomas Wimble of

London. The family had been pioneers in the making of printing ink since 1768. They were the suppliers to Cambridge

University Press.

F.T. Wimble emigrated to Australia for his health, landing in Melbourne on 29 July 1867. He began his business by importing

inks to sell. Soon, however, he imported a printing ink plant and produced the first printing ink made in Australia. By the

1880s Wimble's was supplying all types of printers' needs.

Wimble's transferred their head office to Sydney in 1877, with premises successively at 2 Hamilton Street, 87-89 Clarence

Street, c.1883, Mascot (varnish works), 1916, 35-43 Clarence Street, 1922 and finally at Rydalmere, 1953. The business

expanded and established offices in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth and Wellington and Christchurch, New Zealand.

In the 1980s it established international operations in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, China, and Fiji.

F.T. Wimble was friend of many newspaper proprietors - Bonython, Fairfax, Murdoch, Syme, MacDonald and Archibald.

During 1883-89 F.T. Wimble was in Cairns, where he established the Cairns Post and became the area's first representative

to the Queensland Assembly 1888-93.

F.T. Wimble remained as Chairman of the Company when it went public on the Sydney Stock Exchange in 1920 and stayed

there until his death in 1936. George B. Wimble, his son, continued the business. The family stayed in control until 1970

when the Board arranged for an investment company, guided by Mr Harry Wallace, to acquire control. In 1975 Mr Wallace

became Chairman of Directors following the purchase by his family of 100% of the issued ordinary capital. In 1991 the

company's Ink Division and its affiliate Colorpak were acquired by the Swiss-based international ink maker SICPA. The

company archives and printing museum were transferred to FTW & Co, wholly owned by Mr Wallace.

The printing museum had developed from Harry Wallace's interest in collecting old printing presses and related equipment.

The museum's curator was retired staff member Ralph Grisdale, who had worked for Wimble's, 1934-84. Colleagues

augmented the archives by sending Wallace items of interest. The archives and many of the museum items were acquired by

the Powerhouse Museum in 1995.

Significant contributions made by Wimble's to the Australian printing industry include:

- produced Australia's first printing ink in 1868.

- participated in the printing of the Evening Star of 4 May 1868, which was printed on the first paper manufactured in

Australia (manufactured by Ramsden Paper Mills) - "the first marriage of Australian ink and Australian paper".

- produced first Australian manufactured coloured postage stamp ink (in response to a call for help from S.A. Government)

- sold to J.F. Archibald and John Haynes the printing press to start The Bulletin.

- first to patent composition roller material for presses.

- first lithographic and gravure ink producer in Australia.

- introduced electrotyping and stereotyping to Australia

- published the Wimble's reminder, a trade journal which as well as advertising Wimble products, featured news of

developments in printing technology, government printing offices, industrial information, happenings at local newspaper

offices, obituaries of printing and publishing figures, etc.

Series Title: Wimble's reminder

Date Range: 1895-1957

Physical Characteristics: 7 leather bound volumes and 28 cloth bound volumes of printed journals, with 4

loose issues

Description: Magazines (39), 'Wimble's reminder', F T Wimble and Co Ltd, Sydney, 1895, 1897,

1906-10, 1913-44, 1950-57

'Wimble's reminder' was the company's journal for the Australian and New Zealand

printing trade. It was published from 1894 to 1957, initially as a quarterly, but

became more irregular towards its end. It was not issued between 1944 and 1950

due to the war-time embargo placed on the use of art paper. The journal was

considered a model of letterpress printing in Australia.

The journal includes hints for the printing trade, articles on manufacturers for

whom Wimble's were agents, advertisements for products, and industry news

(employer and employee association activities, retirement notices, obituaries, etc).

Also included are many photographs of products, people and factories, as well as

fine colour illustrations demonstrating particular printing inks and techniques.
