McDonald’s is responsible for 90% of the countries new jobs. Today it has about 28 thousand restaurants worldwide and opens
almost 2 thousand each year. 1 out of 8 workers in the U.S. has at some point worked for
McDonald’s. Hires about one million people annually, more than any other
company (private or public) Largest buyer of beef, pork, and potatoes. Largest retail owner in the world - Earns majority of profits from
collecting rent. Spends more money on advertising than any other brand. A generation ago, ¾ of the money was used to buy food to prepare
meals. Now, ½ the money is used to buy food, mainly at fast food restaurants.
Powerful symbol of America’s economy
Have gained control of American
agriculture Farmers and ranchers are losing their
independence and becoming hired hand for the giant business.
Immigrant worker injuries go unrecorded and uncompensated.
Control of American Agriculture
Vast purchasing power because of
demand Have changed how cattle is raised, killed and
processed. Made a once highly skilled and highly paid job
into the most dangerous job in the U.S.
Purchasing Power
Presents itself as a local company aims to
incorporate local taste and local dishes. ex. Curry potato pie in Hong Kong
The basic thinking behind fast food has become the operating system of today's retail economy, wiping out small businesses, obliterating regional differences, and spreading identical stores throughout the country like a self-replicating code
