T: This is a photograph, showing a lioness battling a crocodile in a river. It is unique in that it shows the dangers of the wild, and what battles you face.

R: The intended audience are people who read the daily mail online news blog. I am not one of their readers. However, I do find nature interesting.

A: The author of the article accompanying this photograph is Kerry McDermott. She is a full-time writer for the daily mail blog.

C: The image is constrained in that it only shows one moment of the battle, so the viewer does not know the outcome.

E: There is no singular argument accompanying this photograph. It was simply to show the natural predator/prey world in which we live.

Page 14: Power Meagan Mayes

P: This is a picture of a clock, that keeps going in a spiral. It shows how time never stops.

A: The creator of the piece is unknown R: The primary audience is readers of the

mombizcoach blog. I do not read the blog, so I am not a primary member of the audience.

A: The image shows that time is an ongoing force, never ending and it cannot be stopped. That is undisputable.

D: I don’t believe the piece urges anything. It just shows the power that time possesses.

I: I don’t need to know anything beyond the piece. I understand what the piece urges.

G: I did not gain anything from the piece. M: The agent created the piece to show how time

keeps going, and urges the audience to use their time wisely.

Page 15: Power Meagan Mayes

P: This creation shows a large number of blue, sad-faced balls, and one yellow, happy-faced ball. It shows how one, however small, can stand out.

A: The creator of the piece is unknown R: The audience is readers of Sam Diener’s blog. I do not read the

blog. I believe one person can make a huge impact, even more than a group sometimes.

A: The bias is that happiness stands out against a crowd of sadness. It’s shown in how bright the happy ball is compared to the sad ones.

D: I believe the piece urges people to stand out, be the happy one in the crowd of sadness.

I: I don’t need to know anything beyond the piece to understand the message.

G: I have not gained anything from this piece. M: The agent used the piece to dare people to be different.

ReflectionFor my topic, I wanted to keep my pictures diverse, because power has so many

definitions and explanations. Some of my graphics fit into one category, but others stand out. A number of my pictures fit under the category of natural power. I use this as an example of power because it is one of the most unpredictable. Hurricanes, tornadoes, storms, tsunamis, earthquakes, and wildfires all cause untold destruction to our world, and yet we cannot control these occurrences in any way. We can plan for them and try to prevent massive amounts of destruction, but that never really works. A few of my pictures fit into the category people’s power. Both the weightlifter and the smiley face show different ways people can harness power to make a difference. Whether that be in their own lives or in others is up to them. The smiley face picture shows how being different or standing out can make a huge difference in the way others perceive you. Standing out from the crowd is not a negative thing. The world would be a total bore if everyone was the same. Uniqueness is what drives creativity. Without people who dared to be different, we would never have the amazing works of art, music, and culture that we experience every day.

Page 21: Power Meagan Mayes

Reflection

I threw in the technology and money because they pretty much run our every day lives. Our entire lives our dedicated to getting a job so we can make money and support ourselves. The more money you have, the more power you have over other people. However, you may have less power over yourself. You may not be able to control yourself, you may indulge in things you would never do if you weren’t rich. The people who were closest to you may change their attitude towards you, or your attitude towards them may change. People are constantly stressing over how much money they have or need. It controls what we do and how we live. Technology fits the definition of power both literally and figuratively. Literally, because technology uses energy to work. Figuratively because it gives us power. We can communicate with people in new ways, we can design and fabricate ideas using computers and machines instead of a pen and paper. We can manipulate others with technology, in the form of weapons. We can use technology to make huge advancements in the medical field. Organs can be grown from cells, without a body to sustain them. Diseases can be fought using computers and high tech machines. Technology gives us an unlimited amount of power.

Page 22: Power Meagan Mayes

Reflection

My first genre morph takes my pictures of natural power and puts them all together, to show how vast the category is. Natural power can be shown through a predatory battle, or a fire destroying a forest. The two things have no relation, yet both show how great and uncontrollable the power of nature is. My second genre morph takes various words that go with time and puts them into a yin-yang form. I wanted to show how time is balanced. We cannot stop it or make it go faster, yet it has its own teeter-totter that fits in our world. We have night and day, seasons, and they always come and go, as they always have, and as they always will. Time may be the ultimate form of power, because it just keeps on. A person who could control time would undoubtedly be the most powerful person in the world, for they would be able to control everybody's lives. This project really made me think about power, and how to show various forms of it. I now have a better understanding of what power is, and how it is seen throughout daily life.
