‘At Newcastle I’ve been encouraged to think outside of the box; to really stretch myself’

For Taka there are no limitations to what she feels able to achieve now, as she approaches the end of her MBA at Newcastle.

‘I’ve come to realise that any restrictions I thought I had in life I’ve been putting on myself. In coming here, I’ve learned to be creative and innovative in how I respond to any issue in front of me,’ she said.

‘At Newcastle, I’ve been encouraged to think outside of the box; to really stretch myself.’

Taka was working for a financial services company in her home country of Nigeria when she decided to pursue an MBA.

She said: ‘It was a really hard decision for me to go back to being a student, but I had strong plans for my life – goals and dreams that I wanted to fulfil.

‘I knew I wanted to study in the UK, so I shortlisted the top universities and Newcastle was in that mix right

from the start.’

For Taka the outstanding aspect of her course has been the quality of teaching at Newcastle.

‘The experience and knowledge lecturers want to impact on you has been attained over many years and the way they simply and clearly distil that knowledge, in the best way for you to understand, is inspiring.

‘In one of the modules in particular the lecturer really brought learning to life, and showed how what we were learning as part of our MBA, really reflected and connected with things that are going on in the world.’

She added: ‘I knew I wanted to be part of a business school where I could develop the personal relationships that would help me throughout my time away from home – relationships with my professors, with my cohort.

‘For me it had to be Newcastle; the people here are amazing.’

‘In these last three years I’ve done some amazing things. I’ve been inspired by the people around me.’

Changing disciplines has allowed PhD research student Fulvio to immerse himself in one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century – tackling the effects of climate change.

After completing a Master’s degree in structural engineering in his home city of Milan, followed by a year spent working in industry, Fulvio decided to return to his studies.

He said: ‘I was really motivated to come to Newcastle and do a PhD in Civil Engineering (Water Resources) because I was really interested in the work. I’ve found all the structure and opportunity I was looking for here.’

He approached Professor Richard Dawson, who heads up the University’s Water Group – an academic group within the School of Engineering which works to make our coasts, cities and infrastructure safer and more sustainable for future generations.

Fulvio said: ‘It’s been a complete change of topic; I was a structural engineer and now I’m dealing with flood protection and strategic infrastructure optimisation. These are climate change related issues which, for me, is the challenge of the century – we cannot reverse climate change, so how do we deal with its often catastrophic effects?’

For his degree, Fulvio is building a multi-objective optimisation framework to improve the efficiency of a city’s emergency response during a flooding disaster.

He said: ‘When a natural disaster occurs – and due to climate change these are going to occur more frequently, and their impact be more severe – if you’ve optimised your emergency response, you can optimise your resources and be more sustainable.

‘If your systems are resilient enough, you spend less on resources during a disaster and your city returns to normal much quicker.’

Fulvio has been using the Humber estuary as proof of concept, but also got the opportunity to develop a further case study while on a five-month placement at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

He said: ‘This was a chance to further international research exchanges among PhD students and early careers researchers and an opportunity to create new connections and build an international network between the two universities.

‘And that’s the amazing thing about Newcastle University – if you expose yourself to these opportunities it is absolutely the right place to be.

‘In these last three years I’ve done some amazing things. I’ve been inspired by the people around me and I’ve had the feedback and support that’s left me free enough to develop my own pathway, but still been there when I needed it.

‘I’m living the life I wanted to live.’

‘The Founderships scheme gave me the platform to move from being a technical expert to becoming an entrepreneur.’Newcastle University alumnus, Johnson, had a date with royalty last summer, thanks in part to the support he’s received from the University’s START UP Founderships scheme.

Johnson was among a select group of entrepreneurs invited to attend St James’ Palace for the prestigious Pitch@Palace initiative. Aimed at connecting some of the UK’s most exciting start-ups with potential investors, mentors and key business contacts, the event crowned a highly promising start to the graduate’s clean-tech company, Equiwatt.

Johnson, who completed his Master’s at Newcastle, followed by a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering, said: ‘Being asked to St James’ Palace was a massive endorsement and opportunity for Equiwatt, and it was the University’s Founderships scheme that gave me the chance to take my dream and make a business out of it.’

Equiwatt is an intelligent energy management platform that tracks household energy consumption, automatically switching off devices to save energy during peak times when electricity supply is inefficient, expensive or simply insufficient.

It was born out of Johnson’s experiences in his home country of India, where power outages are not uncommon, and fuelled by his passion for energy storage and conservation.

'My PhD looked at energy-efficient microelectronics architecture that could revolutionise design of microchips worldwide, no matter the application.

It was while I was working on this that I started thinking about building a scalable technology business that could impact the world right now,’ he said.

‘The engineering and project management skills I needed for my business I got from my PhD and Master’s degree, but the Founderships scheme gave me the platform to move from being a technical expert to becoming an entrepreneur.’

With six months of funding and intensified business support as part of the Founderships package, Johnson set about launching Equiwatt, working with a START UP adviser to prepare a business plan, carry out market research and navigate the complexities of setting up a business in the UK as an international student.

He said: ‘Founderships is a business incubator scheme that helps you gain the skills you need – it gives you the right foundations, then it’s up to you to take your idea to higher and higher levels.

‘In the early days Founderships support was instrumental to Equiwatt’s foundation. Now we have proven the concept and we’re breaking into the market.’

He added: ‘It’s an exciting time and a nerve wracking one when you see something you have dreamt about starting to become a reality.

‘It’s a real rollercoaster ride running a start-up business.’

Spring term

Alongside compulsory modules, many courses offer a range of optional modules, often undertaken in the Spring term and enabling you to tailor your study to a particular field of interest.

Summer term

Many of the more formal timetabled elements of your course reduce now as you concentrate on planning and writing your research/project dissertation. The dissertation is normally between 15,000–18,000 words and provides the opportunity to put into practice all of the skills and knowledge you have acquired over the previous months.

We appreciate that your research project/dissertation is a big undertaking, so we have tailored a comprehensive package of ongoing support, including research study skills modules and expert academic supervision.

You will normally submit your final dissertation/research project around August/September.

Autumn term

Our timetabled courses run through the Autumn term and you will normally study compulsory modules that focus on building your core skills and knowledge in your chosen subject. The first term can seem quite busy as you settle into your new routines, but don’t worry, we provide lots of help and support to ensure your transition is as easy as possible. At the end of the Autumn term, you will break for the Christmas vacation, but will typically work across the holiday period preparing for exams and written assessments in January.

Studentships If you don’t have a clear idea of a specific PhD research project, but know which area you would like to work in, then it may be useful to search for a project that has already been established. These normally have a named supervisor, a fixed project title and funding already in place. This type of project is typically referred to as a ‘studentship’.

See the ‘Fees & Funding’ page of your research degree online for more information. ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses

Doctoral training centres and partnerships It may be possible to undertake a funded PhD studentship via a Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP), Doctoral Training Centre (DTC) or Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT).

Being part of one of these means that you can benefit from the research expertise and training of a number of leading universities, academic schools and academics. These centres are often interdisciplinary and you may be able to collaborate with an industrial or commercial organisation.

You will study alongside a cohort of other PhD students.

Post-study visaThe UK’s new Graduate Route post-study work visa means you can live and work here for up to three years after completing your PhD. Our dedicated Visa Support Team can help to ensure you are supported in your decision making and the application process.

Reasons for change could include timetabling issues, changes in staff, requirements of programme-accrediting bodies, academic changes within subject areas, or due to minimum student numbers on a course.
