My name is Jason Bardeen. I was raised in northern San Diego County, the youngest of three siblings. I attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo directly from high school after quickly deciding on landscape architecture and horticul-ture to be my profession. After five years I gradu-ated under a department that Design Intelligence ranked the fourth best landscape architecture and design school in the U.S. During the summers, I worked in Sacramento and Elk Grove for Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge specializing in irrigation implementation, conservation practices, project management, general maintenance, and practical design solutions.

Design ApproachSome remark that landscape architecture is a profession on its deathbed in this post modern society. I disagree: landscape architecture is the savior of our sprawling urban environment. It produces connections to public policy, cultural and social progression. Successful design must create a sense of place, nostalgia, and meaning. I am passionate about designing contextually to the site, users’ needs, native flora, and materials. During the design process, I strive to never neglect the unique function, audience, flora, and materials of a place. The professional experience I have accumulated influences me to design with a pragmatism that favors the reduction of maintenance and durability.

The design strives to increase green open space in west Chula Vista, trans-forming the bayfront into an opportu-nity to cater to Chula Vista’s dominant Hispanic demographic. A continuous marina promenade and bayside board-walk follow the shoreline. The prom-enade is wide enough to support a farmers market. The boardwalk trans-ports users closer to the ocean, wihch supports the opportunity to educate about sea level rise. The salt marsh expansion is engineered to retain the increasing tide levels and support native species. The north side of the marina

promenade is a beach enclosed by two terraced jetties, where people can swim and sunbath. The recreation park, inland of the soccer field, is designated for passive activities like large multi-family gatherings, birthday parties, quincea-ñeras, weddings, and holiday festivities. The Chula Vista Bayfront Park has a playground, long picnic tables, barbeque areas, bike and walking paths, and open spaces. The amphitheater/festival ground is an open air venue and an ideal spot for concerts, hotsummer night movies, swap meets, car club events, beer and wine festivals, carnivals, etc.

Illustratines how users are prompted to read the sea level plaque. The bronze strip is embossed into the paving, encouraging users’ eyes to follow the strip towards the sea wall and then the sea level plaque. The bronze strip embossed in the paving will annotate what the predicted sea level rise will be in 2050 and 2100.

07 Pine Cone Terrace

Located on the third story roof of a seven story building, Pine Cone Terrace is an urban park designed to facilitate corporate events and employee lunch/ break periods. The stage is large enough to fit a small band and the viewing floor can occupy 100 guests with use of event seats. LED bulbs hang from the galvanized steel overhead structure to facilitate night events. Forms inpired via the abstraction of a pine cone and tree.

11 Los Osos Valley Access Road Park

Tire Playscape

The Los Osos Valley Access Road Redesign focuses on establishing a woonerf, a Dutch term describing a “living street.” The new street design creates an environment that reconnects pedestrians with the road. A tight cluster of low-medium density residential communities surrounding the site is the main audience. Inhibiting traffic into the site is necessary and achieved by narrowing the street width, changing pavement types, colors, and elevations, and introducing abrupt curves and obstacles. The design accommodates cyclists and runners with a separated path along the stormwater swale. A playscape is located at the northern limits near an apartment complex. A public plaza is located at the southern limits of the road/park for residents, shoppers from nearby Target and Costco, and adult students from the continuation school. The large fountain attracts passersby from the adjacent and busy Los Osos Valley Road.
