Urban Oasis

A proposal for a retreat centre located in downtown Toronto. It can accomodate large group events and act as a getaway for smaller groups.

The design limits views to the exterior to create a sense of removal from city life. In addition, two connected courtyards provide natural light and private outdoor space to users.

Light material accentuates the flying form of the roof

Represents the movement of the human form through gymnastics

Echoes the rhythm of a gymnasts body in motion

Casts repetetive shadows creating a sense of movement throughout the building

Heavy materiality and curvilinear connections represent the transition from movement above towards the restful center

The focal point of the building, and also the structure. The heavy core expresses stillness and rest.

Continuing the transition from movement above to rest at the core.

CURTAIN WALL AT CROSS MEMBER

ARCH ATCOLUMN

The centre’s structural expression emulates the motion of a gymnast. Through repetition of various movements the gymnast hones his mind and body so that they are capable of performing flawlessly under pressure.

This gymnastics training centre communicates this concept to its users through its structural form. The form denotes a cycle, one that transitions between movement and rest.

A double height space at grade houses a “Civic Work Space” which is fully accessible to the public. It provides work spaces, reading areas, lounges and computer/internet access and is designed to act as an extension of the public library’s space.

Six office floors are located above this space. The offices are designed to allow tenants access to all floors. Multiple organizations and individual tenants can be accomodated through digital organization of members. Each floor differs in its materiality and light conditions. This, combined with the open concept model allows workers an autonomy of work environment.
