Our Mission
Life at sea has never been easy, and that remains true today. Storms still rage. Separation from loved ones remains the norm. Life on board a ship canfeelconfining.Brieferportcallsandincreasedsecurityprotocolsheighten the stress.
Inmanyports, seafarersfindonlytemptationanddangerattheendofthegangway, iftheyareallowedofftheship.InPortNewark, theSeamen’s Church Institute extends the hand of fellowship and pastoral concern.OurchaplainsvisitmanyshipsdailyandofferhospitalityatourInternational Seafarers’ Center.
Each year, some 60,000 mariners, truckers, port workers and visitors enjoy the comforts of SCI’s 18,000-square-foot International Seafarers’ Center, including its chapel, restaurant, conference room, telephone banks, recreationlounge, basketballcourts, soccerfieldsandshowers.Mariners access the Internet, call home, shoot pool or watch TV. They talk with chaplains trained in recognizing fatigue, depression or issues concerning seafarers’ rights. They wire money to loved ones back home. Mariners of all faiths meditate in the quiet beauty of our chapel, located at the heart of our building.

Our Challenge
First opened in the 1960s, the International Seafarers’ Center resembles a proud ship in need of dry dock. Engineering systems need replacement, public spaces are threadbare, and the decor of another generationlackstheradicalhospitalitywewishtoofferourmariners.Safety and environmental codes need attention after 50 years of use.
Put positively, technology will provide more Internet access and global telephone communication. New security systems will allow sections of the building to remain open during the increasingly 24/7 reality of port life. A redesigned recreation area—pool tables, Internet and TV—will embody our commitment to mariners’ dignity and comfort. New heating, cooling and window systems will reduce operating costs, shifting scarce resources more directly toward mariners’ needs.
Outstandinginstitutionsalsoaretraininginstitutions.Ourthirdfloorincorporates meeting and teaching facilities as part of SCI’s new Maritime Education Center in Port Newark. Twenty-First-Century simulators and high-tech classrooms provide hands-on training for seafarers. At the crossroads of cultures and backgrounds, the Port also furnishes a place tailor-made for chaplains to receive specialized training in cross-cultural pastoral care.
In short, SCI wishes to construct exceptional resources for the Port of New York and New Jersey, maintaining our faithful commitment to serve global mariners and port workers.

Our Solution
Unlike the ship in dry dock, we continue to serve mariner needs during renovation. Already, we have secured transitional space in the back part ofourbuildingforchaplains’offices, marinerfinancialservicesandahospitality lounge that includes Internet and phone access.
Embracing the best of contemporary architecture, our renovated buildingwillprovidemaximumflexibilityofspaceandtechnology. For example, a renovated cafeteria will serve as a conference and catering facility for up to 75 participants. Meeting rooms will integrate presentation technology and support gatherings of mariners, port workers, trade associations or veterans’ groups.
ThethirdfloorofSCI’sPortNewarkfacilitywillincorporateamaritimetraining center—a cutting-edge project that coordinates with important maritime security training. The Port Newark Maritime Education Center strengthens the industry’s ability to prevent, respond, and recover from a transportation security incident, using SCI’s proven record of simulator training, high quality instruction, and close working relationships with government authorities.
We invite you to become part of the solution by adopting a room. Corporate and individual donors will be recognized on our website, on a large recognition wall in our main lobby, and with a plaque located in the space you choose for a naming opportunity.

SCI proposes to open at its Port Newark International Seafarers’ Center a new facility dedicated to security training. The facility will be a state-of-the-art resource for the regional maritime industry as it equips mariners and industry leaders to protect business interests and investments, the greater public andthoseconcernedwithenvironmentalsafety.Thiseffortrepresentsacommitment of vital importance to the Port’s future development.
OurproposaldedicatestheCenter’sthirdfloortoasuiteofsimulationequipment designed to meet current and future needs for Port security and maritime training. Each wheelhouse is equipped with a realistic console and modern equipment and displays. This sophisticated training environment enables the trainee to experience and react to a range of situations and conditions, honing critical navigational and safety skills.
SCI’s revolutionary simulator bridges are also adaptable to land-based scenarios in maritime security training. Using lifelike projection systems, instructors can conduct drills and exercises mimicking terminals and other waterside areas, points of entry and associated roadways. Additionally, the bridge can go airborne as an aviation asset and observe various points of the Port.
SCI is committed to meeting the industry’s evolving needs and challenges, to continue in the forefront of security and maritime training, and to cement SCI’s and the Port’s reputation as a Center of Excellence serving the maritime industry and public at large.
