And what a year it promises to be - the micro brewery revolution is taking the country by storm. We have 27 (and growing) breweries in our locality alone giving the beer drinker a quality choice that we have not had in living memory.

With over 140 beers, this Festival offers a wide choice to suit all tastes, with many of the ales coming from new breweries. There is also an excellent selection of quality ciders, perry and country wines.

A vibrant entertainment programme featuring live music adds to the festival atmosphere.

A local Newark band faithfully recreating classic rock and pop covers from the 60’s to the present day. Formed in 2006 and consisting of a wealth of experience this, surprisingly is their first appearance at the Beer Festival.

1.45pm – 2.30pm ALBION ROSEAn Acoustic rock covers band from Nottingham kick things off with more gentle interpretations of songs by bands such as Coldplay, Kasabian, U2 and the Rolling Stones. Nothing too much for thosedelicate heads

Time to shake up those brain cells once again with today’s instalment.

4.30pm - 5.30pm CORNDOGGERSA Nottinghamshire based six piece band. They present a subtle fusion of folk, blues, rock ‘n roll and jazz, covering some of the greats such as

Dylan, Cohen and Richard Thompson as well as original numbers.

6.30pm - 7.40pm FULL CIRCLE

Nottingham’s premier Rock and Blues band make their debut appearance at our Festival after a superb set at last year’s Nottingham Beer Festival. Regulars of the pub and club circuit around Nottingham/Derby know all about this band, now it’s your turn to find out just how good they are.

8.40pm - 10pm PARKER

After a storming set last year on the Saturdayafternoon it is with great pleasure that we invite Parker back to headline this year’s festival. A four piece covers band from Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire, they have a very diverse set list, covering such artists as The Rolling Stones, TheClash,RedHotChilliPeppers,QueensoftheStoneAgeandtheBeatles.Ifyoulikeyourperformancesgritty, rockin’ and with attitude, don’t miss these guys.

As staffing officer of the Newark Beer Festival foranumberofyearsnow, Ihavenoticedasteady increase in lady volunteers and some

26% (152) of Newark branch members are ladies. With this in mind, I began to wonder if I couldarrange a 2 hour slot at this year’s festival, staffed entirely by Newark CAMRA ladies. The response to my email was fantastic, and now the ‘Beer Belles’ willbestaffingallaspectsofthefestivalonSaturday,25th May from 4.30 until 6.30, looking splendid in theircommemorativepinkt-shirts. I’mnotsurebutIthinkthiscouldbeafirstforCAMRA?

I think this is good positive campaigning forthe CAMRA cause and hopefully the initiative will reinforce the point that real ale is not just about men, the ladies also enjoy a pint!

As well as the 2 hours of staffing, seven ‘Beer Belles’ from the Newark branch of CAMRA were up

at silly o’clock on 18th April to travel to Lincoln Green Brewing Company Ltd, Hucknall to brew a one off beer, especially for Newark Beer Festival.

The ladies helped devise a recipe with Anthony Hughes of Lincoln Green, who explained how the brewing process worked and gave us fantastic hospitality. With guidance from Anthony and Martin Castledine (also of Lincoln Green) we did everything from start to finish, even the cleaning, so this is definitely our beer! Brewing from scratch was a first for most of the ladies and it was the talking pointinthepubduringtheafternoonasI’msureitwillbeformanyyearstocome.Ifeverythingwenttoplan, this beer is a golden, easy drinking 4.2% ale. It should be a nicely balanced beer with a gentlebitterness and good aroma.

The brew has been named “Go Bellistic” and is available at the Festival.

This year’s Newark Branch nominated charity is the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and we will be helping them raise funds at events throughout

the year.The charity provides a rapid response emergency

MD 902 Explorer helicopter 365 days a year and provides a fast, smooth, efficient journey to hospital.

Based at RAF Waddington, the Air Ambulance is fully equipped to attend medical emergencies in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire covering a total of 3,000 square miles.

The crew are airborne within a few minutes of a call coming in and flying at 157mph, can reach the furthest points in either county in less than 17 minutes.

On board Paramedics are trained to give immediate trauma treatment and average journey time from an accident site to the nearest hospital is approximately 8 minutes, well within the “Golden Hour”. We are ready and available to be called on to assist at the scene of an accident, providing medical treatment together with rapid transportation for those who might not otherwise survive their injuries.

Over the last few years we have gradually become accepted as part of an integrated emergency services’ network.

Lincolnshire plays host to a large number of bikers in the summer months making this our busiest season for motorcycle incidents. Often incidents occur in more rural locations which can be up to 45 minutes from the nearest hospital by land ambulance which is considerably longer than the 8 minutes by air.

Known locally as the Ambucopter the yellow M.D. Explorer is now a familiar sight above the two counties, we have responded to in excess of 14,300 calls since we began operations in 1994. In 2012 we attended 236 serious road traffic collisions amongst many other incidents.

The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is entirely funded by donations and we receive no government funding. We attend between 800 and 1000 incidents every year and each incident costs the charity around £2000 to attend which means that we need to raise a minimum of £1.7million to keep the ambucopter flying and saving lives.

Beer festival virgins should take a few moments heretolearnaboutfestivaletiquette.Ifyouarestanding with an empty glass, pick a brew at

random, and then return to this page. Off you go. Now here are some tips to help enjoyyour session.

1. The breweries are listed in alphabetical order, followed by the brewery’s location, the beer strength and then a short tasting note. Remember – some of these brews are so new not even our cellarmen have tasted them, so please be tolerant if the descriptions aren’t 100% accurate.

2. We suggest you start at the lower end of the ABV (alcohol by volume) scale, say around 3.5%, and move steadily towards the heavier beers

at 6 or 7% and beyond. Remember, at this end of the scale you may lose your self-respect, use of your legs, or even your partner!

3. We can’t guarantee that every beer will beavailableateverysession. It isourpolicynottoserve beer that isn’t ready, and some beers (marked asRESinthe list)aren’t likelytobeonfirst. Ifyourchoice isn’t available, there may be several reasons: i) We were unable to get the advertised beer – an alternative from that brewery will usually be on offer. ii) The beer is not yet ready to serve – be patient, it may be available a little later. iii) You’re late and it’s already sold out!

4. Don’t forget to eat! Visit our caterers occasionally to help soak up the beer. Or if you just want nibbles, we stock crisps, nuts and locally produced scratchings in the marquee.

Nigel Brown

Sadly this year’s event is taking place without festival stalwart Nigel Brown, who passed away last October. Nigel worked tirelessly alongside

myself, backstage and behind the scenes for many years.

His life-long interest in rock music made him a familiar face around the local music scene, his infectious enthusiasm rubbing off on many that came into contact with him.

For the duration of the festival Nigel helped preserve the smooth running of the bands backstage, parking, unloading, loading and readying them for sound-check, I will miss his help and personalitygreatly,asI’msuremanyotherswill.

Nigelwould have celebratedhis 49thBirthdayon the opening day of the Beer Festival this year and as a tribute to his many years of selfless service to me and the crew, the stage at the festival will now be namedTheNigelBrownStage.

I would also like to dedicate all this year’sentertainment to Nigel’s memory –rock on mate.

In memory of Nigel, Rob Neil of Maypole Brewery has produced Nigel Brown Ale. This 4.9% beer is available at the Festival and at pubs in town, with a contribution from every pint sold going to the LIncs and Notts Air Ambulance, Nigel’s favourite charity.

Malcolm Kay

Last October we learned of the passing of Malcolm Kay whose “Beery Bits and Bobs” stand was a regular at this and other festival across the

country. Malcolm was meticulous about how he set

up his stand and although he had extensive lines of merchandise (including T-shirts, Bar Towels, Pin Badges etc.) he could always put his hand on anything in a flash. He was passionate in his love of cricket and would spend many a long hour working on his computer listening to the latest test match. He will be sadly missed by festival-goers everywhere.
