In which the President drags the member-ship through the long distant past again.

Having received a positive response to my request for a flood of flashers emboldens me to bore the membership with another reflection from the Way Back machine.

Back in the spring of 1970 I convinced another Second Lieutenant friend to hop a Space Available C-141 to Germany and spend a month rattling around Europe.

As part of the trip we took a tour of the Porsche factory, which in those distant days was nothing like it is today. You did not need a 30 day prior invitation seconded by 2 reliable wit-nesses. We just showed up at the factory door. And when they said “Next English language tour in 2 hours. Go across the street to the local bierhaus and have a bier.”; we did. I still have a picture (somewhere) of one of us sitting on the curb with a brew in hand. I was just as irresistibly good looking then as now, although quite a bit thinner.

In those days, the assembly hall was the red brick building which is now protected from demolition by a historic status marker and is used for storage. In 1970’s the painted bodies came in one end from the paint shop, went the length of the hall, turned 180 degrees, and then went half way back down the building where each car was filled with oil and gas just before exiting the building at the midpoint. If you wanted to watch them put in an engine, you crawled under the 911 as the engine went in and straw bossed the operation. If you were standing at the oil/gas filler station, the production driver asked you if you wanted to go for a ride and out the door you went in a new car over the concrete ramps molded in the pavement to set the suspension. And no review of the assembly process would be complete without mentioning the guy assembling Targa roofs with a bottle of bier on his work bench. Put a roof together, drink a bit of bier. Repeat.

If you are looking for a purpose to this musing, it is to ask the Reaganesque question: Are we better off now or back then. Think about it. Back then we had spare tires and dipsticks. Now we have a black box to rat us out to the Feds and some-thing called Eye Tooth connectivity, which I always thought was my dentist’s responsibility.

We have a new advertiser this month. Check out Jaffe Jewelers’ ads on pages 11 and 17. They have been awarded the franchise to sell Porsche Design watches and pens. Larry Jaffe states they have been in the jewelry business for over 30 years. He invites everyone to stop by the store to check out his latest Porsche Design offerings.

I supported one of our advertisers this month. Craig Friesinger at U.S. Racegear was very helpful in finding a new helmet for me. My old one had an outdated Snell rating. He has a good selection that you can try on and has competitive prices. I ended up buying the updated version of what I already had, but it was helpful to try on other products. Support our advertisers since they support us.

Enjoy the Flash Back article on this page, a response to John Meyer’s August column. Do you have stories like Pat Gar-vey’s and John Meyer’s? If you have a Porsche story, write it up and send it to me. Steve Nelson did, see his write up of the CruZionsville event on page 13.

Please note that Sept.19 is Ferry Porsche’s birthday. Drive your Porsche that day!

Have fun with your Porsche this month.

Flash Back Pat Garvey- past President of OVR

I had to respond to John’s flashing article!

Back in August 1972 I took delivery of the ‘72 914 I still own. While driving around Cincy I noticed Porsches flash-ing lights at other Porsches, or waving. Since 914’s had to raise the lights to flash, the other Porsches were gone before I had a chance to do so. So I bought a fog light bypass setup from an upstart California company called Performance Products. A simple thing, it allowed me to flash my fogs at other Porsches. I never got a response. Remember, back in those days the 914 was not even con-sidered a Porsche, maybe a stepchild, but not a Porsche. We were outcasts!

One afternoon in March, 1973 I came out of Eden Park onto Victory Parkway. Saw a silver 911 coming at me from the other direction & flashed my lights (not expecting a response). The 911 driver flashed violently back & waved. Cool! First Porsche to flash back! I was on my way to the Playboy Club on 7th Street for the Friday banquet and to meet my wife, Janice. We did this frequently during that era - it was a fun place to relax after a hard week. When I parked, this gray haired guy in a 911S roared up beside me. His name was Pete Peters and he told me how he loved anything Porsche, gave me a sip from his flask (been a Cragganmore fan ever since), and invited me to meet him at an SCCA autocross event in the bottoms of Cincy on Sunday. I did so, and met some PCA’ers that got me into the Club. Dave Cowan with White Fang (his 911T), Harry Gompf (with his 914-6) and Pete (with his 911S) all got me so excited about PCA that I joined as soon as I could.

I kept flashing when I saw a Porsche, but rarely got a response. 356’ers seemed to hate 914’s the most, but they weren’t enamored with 911’s either at that point. It all seemed to come around about 1974. Flashing at Porsches became commonplace even for 914’s. It was cool.

Radar detectors killed it! Try explaining to a cop why you were flashing at a Porsche when they had a radar trap set up! Regardless, I’m starting to flash again. May not be in my 914 (yet), but if you see someone flashing and grinning, and you are in a Porsche on the east coast where I live now - it’s me.

Great article John!

Rallye Porsche Mariemont Oct. 6, 2013Grant Karnes- Event Chair

GET READY FOR RALLYE PORSCHE MARIEMONT (RPM) ON OCTOBER 6, 2013!

Mark your calendars now! The second annual RPM, or Rallye Porsche Mariemont, OVR’s signature event, will be held on Sunday, October 6. We had a fantastic turn-out last year and are expecting hundreds of Porsches to adorn the charming Village of Mariemont this year.

RPM Rallye Porsche Mariemont is on FACEBOOK! Be sure and “Like” us and stay abreast of the latest news for the 2013 event.

Registration for the 2013 Rallye Porsche Mariemont event is open. Check our website: http://www.ovrrpm.com.

If you missed this event last year, be sure and join us on October 6. The German Beer Garden was a big hit and participants from OVR and the surrounding PCA regions enjoyed a beautiful fall day admiring a variety of Porsches and socializing in the Village. Spectators from the com-munity joined in the fun to view special displays and vote for the awards.

RPM Volunteers NeededAttention: Looking for a few volunteers to help with the upcoming RPM casual car gathering in Mariemont on Sunday October 6th, 2013. This will be a bigger and better event. We need a few volunteers to help park cars. We also need some volunteers to work set up and tear down. If you are interested, please contact Bill Kief at [email protected]

Warning: RPM volunteering may be habit-forming. Most volunteers from 2012 signed up to return.

Rallye Porsche Mariemont Road TourJohn Patterson- RPM Rallyemaster

Rally: noun, an organized automobile run, esp. of sports cars on public roads, designed to test driving skills…per Webster’s New World Dictionary, 2nd. Edition.

Again this year, our annual signature event will be launched with a casual rally through picturesque Boone County, KY. We’ll start at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport parking lot, 1217 Airport Exchange Blvd., Erlanger, KY (take I-275 to Exit 2 Mineola Pike).

NOTE: If you participated in the RPM rally last year, this year’s is similar but with some new sections to keep things interesting for everyone.

Total rally length is about 65 miles and 2.5 hours (exclud-ing midpoint break), mostly over two lane roads through ru-ral countryside. The route is very hilly with lots of twisties but very few “put your foot down” sections. There are few amenities or gas stations en route but there will be a brief midpoint “health” stop at Big Bone Lick State Park.

No treats or prizes as with some rallies, but you will be rewarded with some great views of the most beautiful countryside in the Midwest…all for $10!

Register for the Rally at www.ovrpca.org and we will send complete tour details to your e-mail address. Or simply show up at the rally’s origination point with $10 at 2:30 p.m.

During subsequent run sessions on Saturday and Sunday, you will improve your driving and knowledge of the track. At some point on Sunday your instructor will probably allow you to solo on one of the most famous road courses in the United States!! Please remember safety is our number one priority and you will drive to your own safe limits which greatly improve over the weekend.

You do not need to do anything to your car for this event. You do not need a helmet as our region has many loaner helmets. All you need are long sleeved shirts and closed toe shoes; we guarantee you will go home with a huge smile on your face.

An added bonus is the Friday night pizza party where you will meet your instructor and the other wonderful people who keep coming back to this event.

Still not sure? Try our Taste of the Track program which allows you to drive the first run session only and attend a classroom session. After driving the first session, if you want to complete the weekend, just pay the difference of a normal registration.

Many of your friends in the Ohio Valley Region have done these driver education events and can tell you more. To register go to Club Registration at the following link: www.clubregistration.net.

Try a Driver’s Education EventDennis Okin-Event Chair

Try a Driver’s Education event if you have never been… If you have been then you know how great Mid-Ohio is!!!!!!

Our region will host a driver’s education event this coming October 12th and 13th at the highly regarded Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. This fine track is less than 3 hours from the greater Cincinnati area, and less than 1 hour from the greater Columbus area.

This annual Autumn Thunder Driver’s Education Course pro-vides drivers with an exciting weekend activity where safety and fun are the most important rules. If you have never driven a road course in your Porsche or other type of vehicle, it is an exhilarating experience. You will drive this course with one of our many talented instructors.

First timers: There will be two classroom sessions over the weekend which will help you understand the course, your car and performance driving. The first driving session will be without helmets. Your instructor will drive the first two laps at a moderate speed showing you the corner worker locations, the proper driving line around the track and a brief demon-stration of your car’s braking capabilities. Then you pull into the pits and swap places in your car. This is where the real fun begins. You will slowly become more familiar with the track and your car’s performance and handling attributes.

2013 ReunionCincy VW Club

VW/Porsche Reunion Welcomes Special Guest Randy Leffingwell. On September 28 & 29 the Cincinnati VW Club will host the 22nd annual VW/Porsche reunion at G.E. Park in Springdale, OH. We are proud to announce special guest author/photographer Randy Leffingwell. Many Porsche people will recognize his name from the Porsche books he has written. He is also a contributing editor for Excel-lence magazine. In his new book Porsche 911: 50 Years the bestselling author celebrates a half-century of one of the world’s premiere sports cars, focusing on the major themes that have defined Porsche’s rear-engined wonder. He tells the whole story—design and development, racing and competition, engineering and technology, style and culture. All the iconic 911 models are included. But beyond telling the story of the cars, this book also spotlights the people behind them: Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, the son of legendary Porsche founder Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, who co-designed the instantly recognizable 911 shape; and Peter W. Schutz, the Porsche CEO who saved the 911 from extinction.

On Saturday September 28 Randy will be attending the Open House held at Metalkraft and will also be attending the VW/Porsche Reunion on Sunday. I’m sure he will be glad to sign or personalize a copy of one of his books for you or your Porsche.

The Reunion provides an opportunity for our members and the public alike to see the cars firsthand rather than in magazines and books. All proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House, Children’s Hospital and Caring Bridge. Awards will be held at 3 p.m. and are provided by Cincin-nati VW Club. They include Top 20 Porsche, Top 35 VW and several special recognition awards. This event is held every year in cooperation with the Ohio Valley Region of Porsche Club of America and the Drei Staaten Gruppe of the 356 Registry.

1. Porsche model numbers originate from when Professor Ferdinand Porsche opened his design office in 1930. After 30 years of working for other firms, he was 55, and it was time to strike out on his own. Each design from Porsche was sequentially numbered, beginning with Type 007.

2. Family members were arrested in 1946 on suspicion of war crimes in WW II. Ferry Porsche, Prof. Ferdinand Porsche, and Anton Piech were imprisoned by the allies and questioned for complicity in Nazi war crimes. After they were freed without charges by the Americans, Professor Porsche and Anton Piech were arrested by the French and held in a dungeon for almost two years until a one million franc ransom was paid.

3. 1947 was a tough time to begin a new company, but Ferry built one anyway as he struggled to save his father’s design firm. Neither the arrests, nor the lack of a factory, nor inadequate financing prevented Ferry Porsche from acting on his vision of building a proper European car using the family name. It was Ferry’s way to honor his father’s lifetime work in the automotive industry, a career that began in 1900.

4. Lacking a factory did not stop the vision. Gmund, Austria was the family summer home, and some of Porsche’s plans and equipment had been stashed there to escape Allied bombing. Fifty aluminum-bodied coupes were built in a nearby sawmill from 1948-1951, the genesis of a company that now produces over 140,000 cars per year.

5. The Type 356 prototypes created two different paths that still dominate company practice: Type 356/1 was a mid-engine, tube-frame roadster. It set the stage for later developments in race and street cars that began with the 550 series, as well as continuing in the 914, the Boxster, the Cayman, and the Carrera GT. Type 356/2 was a rear-engine, unibody coupe. It became the starting point for the subsequent 356 series and all versions of the 911.

6. Porsche transitioned to Zuffenhausen in 1950. Porsche hired Reutter to build steel bodies for their cars and rented space at Reutter to build the frames and other parts. First-year production at their new home was 298 cars, and the 500th car was built on March 21, 1951.

7. Racing successes were immediate. 356s were small, light, fast, and had great handling. These features were noticed by competitive spirits, and Porsches quickly racked up road and track successes.

8. Max Hoffman was behind the growth of Porsche. Hoffman fled the Nazis in 1938, arrived in America

Ten Facts to Know about Porsche & 356sRonald Sieber- flatsixes.com

in 1942, and in 1947 opened a dealership that introduced America to foreign sports cars. He became Porsche’s exclusive dealer in 1950. Hoffman sold 30 Porsches in 1951, and by 1958, Hoffman had increased importation to 4000 per year, almost 30 percent of Porsche’s annual production.

9. Type 356s were truly hand-built. Even with mechanization and assembly line processes, all Porsche 356s were hand-assembled. Each engine and transaxle was built by one person, whose initials were stamped into the case. Craftsmen finished the bodies using traditional coach building techniques: body lead, wooden paddles, and body files. Check out “Made By Hand”, the Porsche factory film documentary from 1960.

10. Total 356 production was 76,000+ cars from 1948 to 1965. In a Road & Track interview from 1950, Ferry Porsche said that current factory production of six cars per day was sufficient because Porsche was “first and foremost a design and consulting engineering firm.” He did not foresee, at that time, that his “handmade special car” would revolutionize the automobile world and change the direction of Porsche...forever.

CIR PCA CruZionsville EventSteve Nelson - OVR Member Photos by Steve Nelson

The third annual Central Indiana Region’s Zionsville Cruise-in was held on Saturday, June 15. I made the 1 hr 45 min trip from Springboro, Ohio to Zionsville, IN during an absolutely gorgeous sunny morning with the sun to my back (with an equally fine trip home, again with the sun to my back). Zionsville is North of Indy near Carmel, Nobles-ville and Fishers, all nice little villages with beautiful homes in the surrounding countryside. It is a quaint little village with about one-third of the streets being tree-lined which provided some nice shade. There are a few antique shops and restaurants. One street made of pavers (about half of which was covered by shade trees) was closed to traffic to accommodate the 100 plus Porsches in attendance. The charity aspect of the event had a goal to raise $10,000 for Alzheimer’s research.

The show began early with an organized breakfast on the outskirts of Zionsville and a police escort to designated parking. The event was from 8 to 3, live music was pro-vided, and there were a few lovely young beauty queens for photo ops. After 3, there was an organized 2 hour cruise into the surrounding Porsche roads ending at Noah Grants Restaurant.

A good mix of Porsche models were displayed, including a few race cars. Attendance was mostly from Central Indi-ana out to Fort Wayne and south of Indy, with a few out-of-state attendees. In the shade and sun were 911’s old and new, Boxsters, 944’s, 914’s, 356’s and more. The Porsche that won Best in Show was a 356, if you can believe that.

For those of you who may be new Porsche Club mem-bers, you will hear the phrase about our events: “Come, have fun, show off your Porsche(s), meet new friends and re-acquaint yourselves with old friends.” This is true and by example: a couple I met at the 2012 CruZionsville were back this year along with their latest addition which is a 1987 Black 911. I say black because they informed me that after they met me last year and fell in love with my triple black cab that they decided they needed a black 911 as well. I also recommended last year that they attend the Boxster Concours 2012 at Porsche of the Village, which they did and they were very impressed with the dealership.

This year I had no close calls with law enforcement but I did encounter some little green apples.

Monthly Meeting MinutesAugust 13, 2013 at Uno’s Pizza, West Chester, Ohio

Attending: Steve Nelson, Thomas Crihfield, Dave Raum, Brent Fagan, Ted & Kathie Hunter, Wade Huston, Bill Kief, Larry Lindgren, John Meyer, Dennis Okin, Rich Rosenberg, Mike Valentine, Grant Karnes, Toni Lichvar, Bill Klumb, Jill Buzzard, Mary Louise Bauman, Josh Snyder, Alan Cole-man, Donna and Larry Wilson and Jerry Wolf.

Meeting was called to order at 6:58 p.m. by President John Meyer. Minutes of the May meeting were accepted with a motion by Mike Valentine, 2nd by Brent Fagan

Executive Board Reports:

President, John Meyer: John passed out PCA cards good for 50th anniversary posters.

Vice President, Grant Karnes: Grant is holding RPM organi-zation meetings every other Saturday at the Mariemont Inn if anyone wants to attend. He has 50 sign ups. Porsche of the Village will be the premier sponsor, with donated items, and they will host a breakfast. We await an answer from King’s Porsche as to whether they will be a sponsor. No decision has been made as to which charity we donate the proceeds to. All information is on the RPM website.

Grant said let’s keep the OVR.org website, which is up and running, content fresh.

Secretary, Jill Buzzard: No report. She omitted to send out last month’s minutes but will do so tonight and they will be approved in absentia.

Treasurer, Mary Louise Bauman: We had a lot of expenses this month: $3500 for website update, and had to borrow 30K for Putnam Races. At the end of July we had $5500 in checking account and $22K in savings. After the races this will have to be paid back, and the Club race will prob-ably lose money. We have fewer entrants this year. Rich and Bill countered that we will be collecting sponsor money. Mike Valentine made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report and Kathie Hunter seconded it. The motion was passed.

Mary Louise said the State of Ohio is requiring that we pro-vide the original 990 form to show that we are indeed non-profit. She thinks that maybe we qualify as a not-for-profit. She has contacted PCA to see if we can get a tax number from them. Discussion. She will follow up on this.

Treasurer replacement: A nominating committee will meet. There are a couple of people who have expressed interest in the office.

Committee Reports:

Advertising, Toni Lichvar: We have a new advertiser, Jaffe Jewelers from Dayton. They are selling new Porsche Design watches and pens, so contacted the Club to have a presence. It was suggested they might sell the product at RPM.

Autocross, Jackie Bergdahl and Mike Norris: Not in atten-dance. No report.

Chief Instructors, Jerry Wolf and Dale Timmester (not pres-ent): Autofeier event needs some new ideas. Discussion; suggestions for rally, prepping car for RPM, tech sessions. Dennis suggested dividing people into several groups to satisfy individual needs. For example, novices have very different needs than experts. Thomas suggested having a buddy system at the track also to help initiate novices. Jerry asked for a volunteer to put a Autofeier program together. Steve Nelson was asked to take this on.

Concours: Steve Nelson will take over. He is in charge of the Taj event on August 24th. White Allen is paying for the event and attendants will pay $10 admission and pay for their own food. Mary Louise suggested that all proceeds go to a charity of John Dixon’s choice. Taj will have its own secu-rity but he would like a few volunteers to get there early and make sure all is in order.

Club Race, Bill Klumb, Rich Rosenberg and Larry Lindgren: Bill reports that the DE is still open and walk-ups will be welcome. We have 40 DE drivers. We are expecting nice weather for the weekend.

DE Chairs, Gary Nichols (not in attendance) and Dennis Okin: Dennis said we have 56 sign ups for Autumn Thun-der. He thanked Kathie for obtaining the good looking long sleeved zippered jackets. We would like 120 drivers.

Historian, Dick Weiss: Not in attendance.

Members at Large, Ted Hunter, Kathie Hunter, Mike Valen-tine, Norm Goldrich (not in attendance): Mike talked about the nice concours at Keeneland in Kentucky.

Membership, Brent Fagan: Reported that we have 12 new members giving us 740 regular members. The new e-mail system is working much better although there is at least one member who is not getting the e-mail blasts.

Newsletter, Wade Huston: Wade was thanked for the excel-lent job he is doing with the Bent Pylon. He welcomes new material, even if critical, and suggested Letters to the Editor. He got a quote for bringing out the Bent Pylon in color since other Clubs do this and he has been asked about it. The extra cost would be $955 per month and it was agreed we don’t want to spend that kind of money.

Past President, Bill Kief: no report.

Past President, Dave Raum: no report.

Public Relations: Kathie Hunter will be PR director, elected by acclamation. Kathie said we are breaking even on badges, and will have them available at all events.

Rally/Tours, Chris Laux: Not in attendance.

Safety, Thomas Crihfield: Dennis said an up to date tech sheet is on the website. We must have signed new ones;
