Surfers Against Sewage

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are excited to be working with the students of Pool Academy. After a hugely successful planning meeting with the Stu-dent Leadership Team, SAS are proud to officially announce the SAS SWAMP Project (Students Working Against Marine Pollution). This project is the first time SAS have worked with a PSHE programme and because of the Pool Academy SLT contribution they are hoping to now run the project

across the county and even nationally.

Dom Ferris, SAS Campaign Officer, says: “We had a great feeling about this project but the level to which the Pool Academy SLTs engaged in the planning meeting blew us away. Some of these guys have grown up on the beaches of Cornwall and they recognised the issue of marine litter, it’s fan-tastic to see their enthusiasm for protecting our coastlines and their desire to take this message out to the local community. We at SAS are hopeful that the Pool Academy project will be the inspiration for all schools across Cornwall to join us in 2013 as Students Working Against Marine Litter. Thanks so much to SLT for coming up with the SWAMP idea!” Working with the Pool Academy’s PSHE programme the SAS SWAMP Project aims to en-

gage, educate and empower students to protect their local beaches.

Next Thursday 31st January, the Student Leadership Team have a training day to become Peer Researchers. The Cornwall Youth Project will be taking the SLT through their paces throughout the day. Once trained the Peer

Researchers will be conducting a youth project with Pool Academy students.

What’s On In The Library?

National Storytelling week- From Monday 28th of January.

All next week the Library will be telling our favourite stories.

Come and have a listen, or better still come and share your

tales!

E-Safety Advice Sessions

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube - being online is

a way of life for most students these days! With comput-

ers, tablets, phones, game consoles, etc. all connected to

the internet it can seem a daunting task keeping your

children safe. We can help! During Academic Mentoring

Day (Friday, 1st February) we are holding E-Safety

drop in sessions in ICT 1 as part of Safer Internet. Make

an appointment with Phil Jones, our E-Safety trained ICT

manager and he will answer any questions you might

have and give you advice on how to keep your children

safe on the internet. We'll have copies of free Microsoft software you can use to monitor comput-

ers at home. Email [email protected] or phone the school to make an appointment or just

pop in on the day!

A reminder for parents and carers

Please can you ensure that all school uniform, PE kit and other items of clothing/equipment are clearly marked with your son’s/daughter’s name. This will help us ensure that we return lost

items to their rightful owners.

Unfortunately, over the course of each school term, there is a large collection of unmarked, unclaimed items accumulating in ‘lost property’.

Pool Family Swim and Gym Competition

The Pool Family Swimming and Gymnastics competitions took place last

week and there were some excellent performances in both. Portreath

were the dominant force in the pool, the presence of the strong Surf Life

Saving Club in the village exerting it's usual influence, picking up half of

the gold medals, with the others evenly shared between Illogan, Pencoys,

Treloweth and Roskear. Swimmer of the day was Robert Brittle of

Portreath for a superb win in the Yr 6 Boys Butterfly.

The Gymnastics competition was split into Club (expert) and School lev-

els, with Pencoys taking most medals for the second year in a row (6)

and Illogan and Treloweth taking 4 and 2 respectively. Gymnast of

the day was Club winner Matthew Bolton from Pencoys.

Cornwall Schools X-Country

Eleven hardy Pool Academy students faced freezing

temperatures, but, ironically, very muddy underfoot conditions

at Truro School on Saturday for the Cornwall Schools X-C

Championships. There were some excellent performances

from the troops, with Matt Stone's 15th in the Inter Boys race

standing out, but the highlight was Martha Carlisle's 6th in

the Inter Girls event, which gained her selection for the

Cornish Schools team for the SW Schools Champs on

February 2nd.
