PRASHANT MORPARIA Ahobilam in Nallamalai Hills of Andhra Pradesh is a great trekking destina- tion with religious signifi- cance. There are nine Narsimha Swamy temples and the Ahobil Matt in Ahobilam. Of the nine temples, four can be reached by road while one has to trek to get to the other five. The nine tem- ples are Jwala Narsimha, Pavana Narsimha, Varaha Narsimha, Malola Narsimha, Bhargava Narsimha, U g r a Narsimha, Yogananda Narsimha, Karanja Narsimha and the Chatravata Narsimha. Of these — Yogananda Narsimha, Chatravata Narsimha and Bhargava Narsimha are in Lower Ahobilam and the other six temples can be reached from Upper Ahobilam, which is about 15 km uphill. The trek to Pavana Narsimha is through the forest, and it’s my favourite of the trails. A dozen of us left Hyderabad on Friday night and reached Upper Ahobilam early on Saturday all excit- ed. Upper Ahobilam is 850 m above sea level and is the base for treks to Pavana Narsimha and Jwala Narsimha. We began the trek to Pavana Narsimha from the Ugrah Narsimha tem- ple. After climbing about 700 steps to the top of the hill we reached Pavana in an hour. After a quick dar- shan, we went back to Upper Ahobilam and drove off to Lower Ahobilam, stopping at the Karanja Narsimha temple en route. After lunch, we visited Yogananda and Chatravata Narsimha. The route to Bhargava Narsimha gets slushy dur- ing monsoons and it is not uncommon to see cars stuck. The Bhargava Narsimha temple is about 3 km away and there is a small lotus pond at the foot of the temple. We rushed back to Lower Ahobilam, but not before getting some beautiful shots of the sunset. The next day, we trekked to Jwala Narsimha through Upper Ahobilam. Ugra Sthambam is said to be the place where Narsimha first appeared and is also the highest trekking point in Ahobilam. After an hour there, satisfied, we started our trek down, stopping at Malola Narsimha and Varaha Narsimha on the way. — The writer is an entre- preneur in the Speciality Chemicals industry. 25 Hyderabad Chronicle wanderlust 38 Friday 20 July 2012 A t Lower Ahobilam the Haritha Resort has a restaurant which serves basic South Indian breakfast and meals.
